Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Hello, Does anyone have a suggestion for a robusto that presents the Cohiba aromatic quality. I used to like the RASS but have gone off them a bit -had too many bad ones per box. Thanks Randy
garbandz Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 cohiba robusto.............. obvious, one would think.......... 1
santela Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 The CoRo maybe... Some also say Juan Lopez no.2, I don't see it myself but you can give it a go. 1
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Obviously.... I have a good stash of Coro but want to leave them be for some time. I'm looking for a Robusto that offers the classic Cohiba aroma...but not at the Cohiba price tag..... I have a box of JL#2 on the way...any other suggestions? Sitting enjoying a RA Small Club.... lovely with a good macchiato!
shlomo Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 You want "cohiba aroma" but not a Cohiba? That's like saving I want the feel of driving a Porsche but in a Honda Civic price tag.... 1
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 I'm sure there's a Honda Civic driving around somewhere in the world with a Porsche name badge on it, but unlikely to be any of the reverse.
Lotusguy Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 If you want to taste a Cohiba, you have to smoke a Cohiba.
shlomo Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 I'm sure there's a Honda Civic driving around somewhere in the world with a Porsche name badge on it, but unlikely to be any of the reverse. So take one of your CoRo bands and slip it on your RASS. Easy as pie!
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Haha I was waiting for that one. So the Cohiba taste is literally exclusive to Cohiba. I didn't know that.
Lant63 Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 por larranga picadores is the closes you will get 1
Habana Mike Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Surprised Marc hasn't piped in on this. Aren't all Robustos the same, just with different bands? 4
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Wasn't the answer I was hoping for. Had hoped for a substitute so I can enjoy close to the Cohiba flavour and profile - everyday. Yes have smoked many a Cohiba, my favourite is by far the robustos. I found the Behike 52 and 54 way overrated - I'd rather a Siglo VI - which tickles my fancy far more than a Behike. I have spent much of today deciding up on a box of Punch DC, HDM DC, or Bolivar Corona Gigantes - I want big flavour long time. Thanks Randy
Duxnutz Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Those Vegueros Manatas smell quite grassy. Had one and it reminded me of a young Cohiba.
UpInSmoak Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 I would try the H Upmann Connie 1. It's actually a hermosa #4, slightly different vitola but still considered a robusto by others. And what I think your asking for is the poor mans prosche, the h upmann offers a lot of bang for the buck. Added benefit that you can easily find boxes that have a few years on them. It actually is easier to find an aged box from 11 or 12 versus recent production. All in all, Connie 1 is a great smoke that shares some characteristics that a Coro might. Nothing will match the Coro, but these offer a good smoking experience for half the cost.
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Thanks UpinSmoak... appreciate your answer! Just the intel I was looking for through those thick glasses of mine .... I will order myself a solitary Connie No 1 and see how it goes. The price of Cohiba seems to continue to head northward. I do wonder whether the forthcomming tightning of cigar laws with the medelling by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA will negate a pressure to drive prices upwards caused by the loosening of USA Cuba relations.... A poor mans Porsche...well I do enjoy by beloved Cohiba Robusto and am trying to diverify to keep my cigar bill under control thanks to the weakening of the Aussie dorra. Maybe the motto to the story is the reason why Cohiba command a premium price!
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Thanks for the tips Lant63 and Dixnutz....
Smallclub Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Can someone recommend a $10 whisky that taste exactly like Lagavulin 16y? 2
Guest rob Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 The yearly FOH blind tasting competition shows that without a band, most of us - especially myself - have no clue what we are smoking.
Randolph Posted October 18, 2015 Author Posted October 18, 2015 Can someone recommend a $10 whisky that taste exactly like Lagavulin 16y? I can! Lagavulin...just buy a small measure. Thick glasses make it look larger...
DoubleDD Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Doesn't JR make a Cohiba Robusto alternative? ? 2
CaptainQuintero Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Last year in the blind tasting I swore blind (literally) the a Robusto was a Cohiba Robusto, turned out to be a Bolivar Royal Corona. Even after finding out I still couldn't believe it wasn't a young CoRo. Maybe try some of those and see if you get the same experience. 1
Lant63 Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Surprised Marc hasn't piped in on this. Aren't all Robustos the same, just with different bands? no, that's all cigars
mk05 Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 no, that's all cigars Just shows you haven't really paid attention to anything. Some of us have nothing to sell you, just trying to pass off some knowledge that used to be foundational base for all smokers.First, forget factory rolling brands. That idea died in 2005 during that year's Habanos meeting, if I understand. Factories roll vitolas. What I know is that it comes to factories and the inclinations of each factory's manager. Let's take a random factory like BMU12/13. That factory rolled Robustos vitola, from JL#2, Epicure #2, D4, to Cohiba Robusto. That was its job. Say you do believe in box codes. Then by definition, those cigars - at the least - aren't what they claim to be, blended by the manager to be his interpretation of the cigar in question, or most likely, are the same fortaleza level Robustos rolled and banded for what's needed. Simple. Say you don't believe in box codes. Then everything's up to the factory manager. You'd have to conclude that the BMU factory manager has the same taste and preferences as 20 other cuban factories all rolling Hoyo Epicure #2. You'd also have to convince yourself that the manager exercises QC, and does not pull Robustos from a Hoyo escaparate to band as JL when needed to meet quota. I think we all know better than that and some have even seen rebanding firsthand. Furthermore, years of blind tasting of Robustos here on FoH of non-casa matriz Robustos shows that no one can tell the difference of Robustos from any non-casa matriz factory. It is essentially a blind study showing that there are no differences between non-casa matriz factory Robustos. The only time anyone can actually tell anything at all, is when one smokes a Bolivar Royal Coronas from Partagas, which I believe was last year's blind. 3
