Popular Post planetary Posted October 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted October 9, 2015 Because I'm still a bit new to habanos, I decided to embark on a little project to watch the full glory of the FoH video review catalog and take in as much context and experience as I could from that material. As I did, I took... well, I guess it ended up being extensive notes, which I've been documenting in a Google spreadsheet. A few stats, on the off-chance they might be interesting... There have been 198 posted review videos. Dec 3rd will be the 7th anniversary of the first video posting to YouTube. There have been 220 total cigar appearances, with 196 unique cigar appearances (sometimes the same cigar is revisited) The "average cigar" has been 48 ring gauge by 146mm (5.75 inches) with 2.3 years of age on it. The average cigar has a body of 3.09 out of 5, which is just over medium, and received a rating of 85.3. Rob's done 194 reviews and his average score is 85.6. Ken's done 139 reviews and his average score is 86.0. Smithy's done 109 reviews and his average score is 83.9. The most commonly observed flavor notes were: Cream (77) Earthy (62) Chocolate (55) Leather (53) Toasted Tobacco (48) Coffee (48) Straight Tobacco (38) Dried fruit / fruitcake (38) Dry hay / straw (32) Harsh youthfulness (32) Milk coffee (31) Grass (30) The top rated cigars are:98.5 - Partagas Lusitanias (Gran Reserva Cosecha 2007) -- reviewed May, 2014 98.0 - Cohiba Robusto -- reviewed Jan, 2015 97.5 - HdM des Dieux -- reviewed Mar, 2010 96.0 - Cohiba Siglo VI (Gran Reserva Cosecha 2003) - reviewed Mar, 2009 96.0 - Cohiba 1966 (EL 2011) - reviewed Nov, 2011 96.0 - Bolivar Gigantes - reviewed Sep, 2015 The cigars with the highest observed body were:Partagas 8-9-8 Varnished - reviewed Feb, 2011 Partagas Culebras - reviewed Mar, 2011 Number of times Ken's feet were on display: eyes started bleeding before I could complete the count Number of times Ken implored Habanos SA to put an anonymous roller code on the box: I tried to count, but lost track out of malaise Number of times Rob was wasted by the end of the review: arguably most Number of times a recording segment was lost due to technical failure: hundreds? In the sheet, I also grabbed notes on the review scale that Rob and Ken use, as I tried to make sense of what the difference between an 89 and 91 might be, and a few other bits. Cheers! 16
Habana Mike Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Wow! Quite the effort. Good stuff How long did it take you to watch all of these?
planetary Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 Rough estimate: 198 videos * 10 minutes average length = 1980 minutes, which is... 33 hours of material? Took me a bunch of weeks to find the time to go through them all, but they're comedy gold!
planetary Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 Love the numbers! Are you a statistician? Amateur, if at all. I just like data. 1
JohnS Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Kudos to you, planetary. This data collection is absolutely brilliant. I love reference material on anything and everything related to this wonderful hobby!
luv2fly Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Now that is amazing. Good work and thanks for the data. Very interesting information.
archosaur Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Well done! I love FOH video reviews. Good, bad, or ugly - they are always entertaining!
maduro Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Excellent job. I think I will save your results and use them as a point of reference. This could also be something that's recommend reading for newbies. Once again very entertaining and well done. Cheers.
Boosted Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 That's some damn, fine work planetary! Thank you for sharing the results of your data.
stogieluver Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I've watched quite a few, maybe a dozen or so, and find it interesting the average rating over the entire series is in the mid-80's. I would guess the average rating of ones I've seen to be in the low 90 range. Great work. Thanks for putting this together and sharing. Wonder if Rob and Ken will be surprised to read these results.
Habanos2000 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Great work and detail. The only question I have is regarding the "average" rating. Are you calculating that by dividing the total score by all the cigars, even those without a rating?
LeafLover Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I miss the old Czar deck. Also miss the guest reviewers. Ken and Rob is a staple. I also liked Smith of course as well as Bster and Artie. And who was the young kid that Rob said had a good palate?
Maxismoke Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This is really lacking data around what Springsteen songs were played in the background during the review. Do over. ;-) 2
planetary Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Great work and detail. The only question I have is regarding the "average" rating. Are you calculating that by dividing the total score by all the cigars, even those without a rating? This is a good point! - For cigars which were given no score, I actually gave them no score, and those are excluded from the average. - For cigars which were pitched and given no score, I assigned them a 0, and those are included average. I debated also giving them no score, or a standard "this is terrible" score like a 60 or 50, but I wanted all the non-zero rating numbers to have come from the reviewers, not me. To see how much of an impact this had, I created a new tab removing the 0-point scores for pitched reviews, and the average scores changed substantially: Rob's increased from 85.6 to 90.1 Ken's increased from 86.0 to 88.7 Smithy's increased from 83.9 to 88.3 Does that feel more right to people? Perhaps I should just remove the average and show a ratings histogram for each reviewer. This is really lacking data around what Springsteen songs were played in the background during the review. Do over. ;-) And let's not forget Bob Dylan, who might make a strong second. I also thought about fields showing the location of the reviews and listing the guests who make appearances, but... yeah, even nerds have their limits. 1
oliverdst Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Springsteen : Dylan atleast 3:1Lol trueBeing a (former) engineer I love excel. This work, I guess, will be a good tool to make Rob/Ken revisit some cigars.
planetary Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Alright, folks. For those curious, I added a new tab to the sheet: "Ratings graphs". Can't link to it directly, but you can see it if you reload the spreadsheet page. You can hover over the various bars and wedges to see the specific values in the graphs. Most commonly used buckets for each reviewer: UPDATED (several updates, including some re-binning) Rob: 90-91 (27% of cases) followed by 91-92 (22%) Ken: Both 90-91 and 91-92 top his frequency chart with 19% each. Smithy: Like Rob, the Wookie likes 90-91 the best (29% of reviews), followed by 88-89 (21%). I have not yet determined if there's a correlation of scores to time-of-year, though that might be interesting.
