I have been on a good run of cigars lately and it has been a while since I have had a "pitcher" .....a cigar that was simply rancid in flavour.

Worse it was a cigar from a great cab to boot (has provided some stellar smokes). A cigar that I look forward to. Hoyo De Monterrey Especial 2010.

By rancid I mean that it had all the flavour characteristics of being dropped in a urinal and then dried.

I was beaten at the inch mark and pitched it in disgust toward the garden. Compost will be it's only gift to mankind.

Your most recent epic fail?

Was gifted a custom roll of some type/marca (didn't recognize the name on the card that came with the cigar in the baggie) from the DR about a year ago. Put it away in the humi and decided last week to break it out and give it a try. Cut it and immediately the wind tunnel would hardly light. When I did get it lit, it was so harsh and acidic, I threw it in the bottom of the stinky ashtray and broke out a CC.

What were you pairing it with?

Probably the most epic in recent memory was an '08 Sancho Panza Belicoso I was telling Prez about recently. Rancid acidic newspaper (News ltd paper probably) tasting creature that failed to wanna stay lit halfway through (65% storage).

I rarely ditch anything, especially if it's gifted and will try to persevere til the halfway point at least. Crazy thing is I love me some Sancho Panza.

It was a non cuban. Oliva serie v melanio in petit corona. This one in particular was just over the top with nicotine. While not strong, there was a hint of ammonia this one too. The rest of the box were amazing smokes. In hindsight i should've chucked it, but nooooo i have to man up and finish it.

Wound up puking over the edge of my deck and feeling woozy the rest of the night.

Aside from some very tight draws, none that were nearly as revolting as you describe.

Same for me. The only super bad experiences that I can recall are all from tent pegs. But I agree with you on tossing. I rarely get past an inch or so before pitching.

Life is too short for bad cigars.

Smoked a Pinar del Rio Oscuro Toro a couple of days back. Absolutely rancid, bitter, ashy and harsh. No redeeming qualities at all barring construction....

Pitched at the halfway point, only made it that far as I was trying to give it a chance.....

For me, it was a Monte Edmundo a couple months back. It was so rancid and bitter from the start. I stayed with it for a bit hoping it would change, but it never did.

I had one of those odd ball off cigars last night. jl#2 with a piss poor yellowish wrapper. rest of the box looks and smokes great. figured I'd give it a shot but chucked it pretty fast. probably catch one like that every 5 boxes or so

Not as bad as you describe but I was very dissatisfied with the Arturo Fuente lost city piramides. Bought a box of 10 can't see my self touching another after the first one. I've been generally happy with the Fuente cigars but this was an outright dissapointment

Also had a current box of Trinidad fundadores which was very underwhelming especially for what I paid. Hopefully time will change that but I don't see it going very far

*That La Escepcion RE long and skinny. Totally no flavor or enjoyment for me no.gif

A VR Unico that was gifted to me by a friend

Sour urine and rancid ammonia from first light to when I eventually tossed it.

Managed to persist with it to the halfway mark before tossing it.

I don't like to ditch cigars before the nub but this thing was making me ill

I bought something called a Punch Signature (Honduran) at a B&M a while back. I thought I'd give it a try.

It was like diving into a swimming pool filled with black pepper. I tried to fight my way through it but after getting about a third of the way in I began to break into a sweat, sat with my head in my hands dripping sweat on the floor for about 10 minutes and then ran to the washroom and lost my dinner. Done in for the night.

Liga Privada No.9 is usually a great cigar, a flagship of Liga Privada. Though the last time I had one, right from the get-go it tasted like musty old wet dog.. fought to the halfway mark and pitched the rest.

A Siglo II I smoked a while back. Harsh rancid taste and left a finish like I had gargled with isopropyl alcohol. Probably the worst cigar I've ever smoked. I smoked it about half way before pitching it, mostly out of morbid curiosity. I kept thinking a cigar with such a good reputation couldn't possibly taste this bad.

Padron 2000 Maduro from 2006. I couldn't tell if it was more bitter than rancid or the other way around. I certainly didn't want to take the time to find out either. It's too bad as that particular box holds some sentimental value to me. Oh well. I also have tossed a handfull of H Upmann tubos from the late 90's. Flavor was great, but didn't want to risk the stroke that would have been required to pull a draw through them.

Had a shocker the other day...

Lit a 2008 Vegas Robaina Classico that Id been looking forward to. Harsh, ashy and tough to draw. Pitched it and lit a 2-dot Cohiba Lancero, unknown age that I had found in an old tobacconists in London. Tasted of musty old cellars and newspaper. Pitched that too.

Lit a fresh Magnum 46. Beautiful!

Mine was a shocker. Was gifted a Siglo VI from their inaugural year by a fellow member here. I was expecting something amazing and was totally blown away how horrible the smoke was. Made it halfway through before I pitched it. I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for the rest of the day.

That was really my great awakening to "life's too short for a bad cigar". If it's not going good in the first third of a cigar, I move on to something else.

My last epic fail?

Going to London for 2 weeks whilst Rob is rocking the 24:24's with epic aged stock! pod.gif Man the time zones here to there are awful! I can't make any of the auctions in time.

As to cigars, this last July I was enjoying a lovely ''11 Encanto from an FOH sale. Me and the boys had burned through an entire cab in June and July they were so spectacular. Owing to the dim, out-of-doors lighting I had miss-punched this one and was losing the last of the cap as it burned down to the final third. A very nice fellow next to me commented, "Oh that cigar is too dry!!" which I knew it was not and we'd just smoked 6 others that went fine. Anyway, Mr. Friendly graciously offered me a Siglo VI tubo which he took pains to explain how he brought them in via diplomatic pouch and so on. I fired that puppy up and it was the hottest, driest, most rancid smoke I'd ever had. 1/4 in the entire wrapper started to flake and delaminate from the cigar. It was unlike any Siglo VI I'd had before.
