leftimatic Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Man I hate asking for help. It's a moral conundrum mainly. My niece is getting married in July, I have never met the groom but I am thinking that a box of cigars for him to toss around and act like a big shot might be a nice gesture. Everyone says he's a real nice guy and a good match for my niece. Heres the sticky part do I get him a box of NC's. Thinking Punch London Clubs, not to big not to harsh, and only $55 a box. Or do I just get him some CC's. Some RyJ's of some nature, nothing to big strong or expensive. Nothing that needs aging because I doubt they would get it let alone decent care. I know most will end up half smoked and stuffed in a plastic cup soaking up rum and coke. But there may be someone there who enjoys a good smoke (me for one) and I wouldn't want to let them down. Nor do I want to give him some and then pull out my own better ones, kind of a snobby thing to do IMHO. I can live with a London Club or two or do I just bite the bullet and get him something decent but not so good I wished I had of bought them for me. Now for the part where I get 500 opinions. What do I and what do I get him if I go CC and what should I get him if I go NC? Should I be a good Uncle or what? 1
polarbear Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Not too sure what "Too expensive" is for you, but If it were me, I'd go some HQ/PSP Monte 5's for a CC- I've done this in the past and its gone down pretty well- $155us from our host If you're looking at NC's maybe a box of Fuente Short Stories- They aren't too strong and an interesting shape. $122us from most US suppliers Both are quality smokes that I would be happy to puff on all night
free85 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I vote for the good uncle bit, only because if I was at that party it'd be AWESOME to have a nice CC as a guest (or a member of the bridal party). The upside, of course, is you'll get to enjoy that (hopefully) open bar with a nice CC yourself!
Popular Post El Presidente Posted March 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted March 9, 2015 I take the view of giving the best that I can afford. No regrets, no second thoughts. That may be NC or CC. I have found that sometimes a 10 pack/box of Siglo VI/Monte 2/R&J WC/BRC Tubos/ is all that is really needed. Groom, best man, bridal party, father in law, yourself. Done with a couple spare. If a full box is really needed then SLR Regios/El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme don't break the bank and are approachable even to those who may never had had a cigar. It is a celebration Whether you spend $160 or $60 you are never gong to miss the $100 when you look back down the track 5

Then I don't feel as bad watching them get turfed or knowing that they are destined to end up stuffed in the back of a closet somewhere. I wasn't as worried about price as much as desecration. Plus I want it to be enjoyable for those who are interested also, not to overwhelming. Time to go to the store. Need to pick up a bottle of Navan Cognac also. Been a bit of a tradition last three weddings mine included.
leftimatic Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Do you know if he smokes? Just the hippy hay from what I gather. I should just get him a nice box and a bottle and not dig so deep into it. Hell the last thing on his mind is going to be the flavour profile of a good Cuban cigar.
leftimatic Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 RyJ coronitas in cedro are a great celebratory smoke Anything in cedro looks good. Nice size too. I really enjoyed the No3 Tubos but they took a year to take shape. Trying to stay away from PSP and HQ because I will just end up keeping them..... I know me.
Borgy Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 It's the thought that counts this is a bit like my post you will get some of them loving what you gave and there will some that will say why.At the end of the day your not going to please everyone go with what you would like those that don't like will just have to suck it up.
CaptainQuintero Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Tubes are anyways great, people can take one as a memento and smoke it wherever they have the time.
ThuringiaSmoker Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I'd recommend Tubos as well, mainly in the view of storage. What about Punch Punch Punch A/T? Box of 10, not too expensive, and they are like "the average" of Cuba - not too strong, but rich in flavours, sweetness, earthiness, just fine. Or go with the president, offer him a selection. Maybe with a little humidor and boveda packs. Looks nice and it is something that stays or at least can stay. And that's what marriage is all about isn't it?!
LordAnubis Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I agree with my mate inside the velvet ropes, CQ. Something in a tube. Cohiba tubes because they look kick ass! 1

You can't go wrong gifting these can you? Then again, I'm biased and lack objectivity on this matter as my avatar testifies.
free85 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Those Cohiba tubes are seriously classy looking. Would go well with a tuxedo when pulled out. I cannot imagine they're inexpensive though!
leftimatic Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 I've got it! Seeing as how I am just a lowly self employed carpenter whole boxes of fancy cigars are out of the question. Not because I think they are too expensive but because it just seems wasteful. I hate wasting money and materials (its a carpenter thing). If I knew the guy more and at least two other guests that smoked I would go Cohiba all the way. So here's the plan. It came to me while making morning coffee. I will whip him up a nice presentation box, you know dovetail it and stuff, go get some nice fancy wood. And then fill it with a mix of cigars say 15 or so of different sizes brands and origin. Or start with ten and top it up when things run out. A grab bag of sorts. I can smoke what I want and everybody can pick and chose what they want it's win win in my eyes. Plus the beauty of the box is, I will make it big enough I can make or include something nice for my niece also. And then they have a nice furniture type piece thing to put on a mantle or side table. I think I have enough of a selection to pull it off and five months to gather any extras. You know sometimes you just need enough opinions to form your own. Thanks again fellas. 4

free85 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 That's a great idea. A quality crafted gift is always a great thing to get.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this idea! Out of curiosity, how available is Spanish cedar out that way? It's costing me over $15/BF for rough stock here on the other side of the rocks

If it gets to be too much, I'd still with an affordable box of tubos - something corona/PC sized like any of the RyJ offerings or maybe Punch Coronations, H Upmann Coronas Majors/Minors... It's always heartbreaking to give someone a Cohiba or plain ole great robusto and see them smoke a quarter of it, smash it out, and then switch to cigarettes for the rest of the evening. You should be my uncle! 1
