shlomo Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Here's a question, the 2015 EL the Upmann Mag 56 (Or was it 58?) will presumably have the second magnum band like both the m46 and m50. With the addition of the EL band will it be the first widely available Cuban triple band? Don't know. Won't buy any. Cigars were better with zero bands. 2
cigcars Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 The only thing I've ever liked about Fonseca is the cute as hell dude pictured on the box (that is the Habana one - the Dominican picture of him looks like he's got A.I.D.S.) Otherwise, I've NEVER truly enjoyed Fonsecas, except for the No.1 and the unfortunately discontinued Invictos.
cigcars Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I don't like the idea of axing anything. I don't like Punch, but I don't want anyone axing it either. I like options. There's an ass for every seat. And likewise, I don't like the Trinidads. But agree with your statements about discontinuance because of any one or more persons. I wouldn't include it in my choices because SO MANY of you all seem to love this brand. Except for the original release of the Fundadores 24 pack box in 1993, Trinidads have NEVER been enjoyable to me.

In fact, Guantanamera is not a HSA band. It belongs to ICT (Internacional Cubana de Tabacos S.A.) who produce the fully machine-made Guantanamera, Belinda, Troya large cigars; plus the various Brands of the Mini, Club, and Puritos small machine-made cigars (cigars less than 3 grams). 1
kuma Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Small Club where in France are you living. I went to Nice, Menton, Monaco, Aix en Provence, Villefranche-sur-Mer last year and my wife and I throughly enjoyed that part of France. I know this has nothing to do with said thread but just saw your location and it brought a smile to my face. Hope the Frence can keep their status as the number one tourist destination in the world along with their unique and wonderful culture. Can't wait to go back!

That's great to know Trevor! I guess my view is that it is important to avoid sentimentality with these things. However, I'm still an advocate of the saying that 'you get what you pay for'. I respect anyone that doesn't like Punch because honestly, flavour-wise, it can be an indistinct cigar, but I've greatly enjoyed quite a few Coronation half-hour smokes. If it was deleted tomorrow I'd cope by replacing it with another 'go-to' cigar. (Monte 4, Bolivar PC or Partagas Short/D4 etc.) If we compared this topic to Scotch whisky and hypothesised that Johnnie Walker Red label would be deleted I know there would be an uproar worldwide. On this forum there would be guys like me that would not lose a 'wink of sleep'. A Scottish man I met my travels recently told me that it is not even available in Scotland.

That would mean that every EL is "better" than every regular production, every Cohiba is "better" all limited produced cigars with huge mark-ups are better.....I would hope that EVERYBODY would know better than to believe that expensive means "better". 3
JohnS Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I think if you go for cheaper cigars and expect 'greatness' every once in a while you will be pleasantly surprised, but probably not often. I didn't even consider applying the saying 'you get what you pay for' in regards to expensive cigars. What you say is true Shlomo.
LGC Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 ... just go back to the lineup pre-2002. Most of the stuff that came after that is over hyped and/or over priced. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
avaldes Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Yeah I would be in for the pre 2002 lineup. Seems kind of funny that they axed a lot of classic flavorful cigars to build today's lineup of generic donkey-dongs. Actually when you put it that way, their logic kind of makes sense. I am sure it is a lot easier to produce generically flavored cigars (less individuality required from the farm to finished product).
Popular Post cigcars Posted February 22, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 22, 2015 Por Larranaga If anything, they NEED to re-introduce larger size regular productions of this brand! 5

I didn't even consider applying the saying 'you get what you pay for' in regards to expensive cigars. What you say is true Shlomo. Of course it depends on how you define "greatness" etc., etc. but I, for one, like Quinteros. Every time I break one out, I ask myself why I don't buy/smoke more of them. Like the OP said, he hasn't tried any, but simply knows that they are crap. And I consider it far from true that you get what you pay for with HSA brands. Some of the cheapest - PLMC, Party Shorts, RASCC - are some of the best you can buy, IMO, while I've rarely detected greatness in HURR, Cohiba Siglos, any of the EL, and most of the RE I've had. 3
duabley Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 None. We don't need more $40+ cigars with triple bands and serial numbers. We need enjoyable, relatively affordable cigars that most here would not be able to notice in a blind review. Nothing should be deleted except some of the newer nonsense like the Monte petit 2, the new vegueros, the psd5....overpriced hype.
duabley Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Couldn't agree more! I'm preferring my jlp cremas over a HQ box of P2's , and about to nub one now.
shlomo Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Couldn't agree more! I'm preferring my jlp cremas over a HQ box of P2's , and about to nub one now. That's because the P2 is possibly the most bland, underwhelming, uninspired cigar that comes out of Cuba. HQ, PSP, whatever...won't make them taste better.
Smallclub Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 People are still voting for Guantanamera which is not even a HSA product…
earthson Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 How about all of them, since we all know Cuba's heyday has passed and Dominican and Nicaraguan manufacturers are now producing the world's best cigars?
JohnS Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 How about all of them, since we all know Cuba's heyday has passed and Dominican and Nicaraguan manufacturers are now producing the world's best cigars? Haha....Cigar Aficionado magazine certainly think so judging by how many articles and advertisements they carry in regards to NC's.
earthson Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Haha....Cigar Aficionado magazine certainly think so judging by how many articles and advertisements they carry in regards to NC's. Theres a reason NC companies are spending so much dough, right? There's some excellent NC out there, but some of those ads make me laugh. I guess cigars are like music groups... no matter how horrible they might be, there is someone out there who thinks they're the best!
dangolf18 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 If anything, they NEED to re-introduce larger size regular productions of this brand! Ok, well the PLPC is alright, but honestly if Habanos SA is not going to give PL the love desevers might as well axe it. In my opinon, onlly reason why people love it is that it offers a resaonably priced petit corona. Other than that and it's pricey RE's, who gitves a rat's ass lol.
Maplepie Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I vote to not ax any. But not because I love them... More so because they serve their own niches. Especially Guantanamera. In fact, you should all be thanking Guantanamera to some extent as it's the most people (non-smokers) buy when leaving Cuba. They're the ones that they come back and give to their bosses, friends, etc and show them that cigar smoking isn't a hobby. To a completely new palate, Guantanameras are actually pretty good and make people a bit more willing to smoke or be around cigar smokers. On top of that... The puritos are excellent little cigars for any occasion. Rivals the Partagas chicos.
Maplepie Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 People are still voting for Guantanamera which is not even a HSA product… Could you elaborate a bit more on that? I just reached for my little tin of Guantanamera Puritos beside me. On the bottom of the guitar print, there's a little barcode that above it says: Habanos SA.
