I would love to sit down with this guy and chat.

The part at the end is very telling. All the regular smokers I know would prefer to cut and light there own, while many others that come into retail shops love the cut and light service.

Cutting and lighting my cigars as a service? No, not for me but it's great to see the passion behind this service.

Me too, and I think this is where they standout. People who are attracted to this kind of thing appreciate people who know how to appreciate something. It's always great to see someone who actually cares about what they're providing.

Amazing! Looks wonderful. And you gotta respect that level of passion.

I met Vahé Gerard briefly in his shop in 2008. At first he was a bit standoff-ish which is fair enough, probably had better things to be doing than spending time with some tourist wanker! Which I'd happily admit to being.

After I brought up the Geneva smoking ban which was coming and going at the time, it was actually reversed for a time in Geneva in 2008, he suddenly got animated and very friendly. Nice guy. Impressive shop. No single sales at all, boxes only, which says something about the clientele.

Boxes only? Wow...I can only dream of being a regular client in an establishment like that! Thanks for sharing this experience, Ryan.

Anyone here read The Connoisseur 's Guide to Havanas by Gerard Pere et Fils? I remember devouring it during the nineties. They called the Partagas Shorts an ideal cigar for beginners or ladies, if I remember correctly

Ryan, You are lucky to have gotten to enter the humidor - I found them very stand-offish when I visited in January, and I tried to engage in conversation a few times, just to get an exasperated cold shoulder.....even though there was no one else in the store or anything. Wouldn't let me near the glass wall. Mr Gerard wasn't there when I was there, so I can't speak for him personally. I know I look like a tourist wanker, but surely if I'm asking for cigars like Diplomaticos No. 1 and such, I must know a little bit about cigars to begin with.....

This, combined with the piss-poor condition of the cigars they showed me, makes me certain never to visit their shop again ever. The dried-out Bolivar Lonsdales and Diplomaticos #1s were truly terrifying. The RA Perfecto RE's that I picked up (they were the only open shop in town to have them at the time) took forever to find, I had to go through boxes and boxes to find a few worth getting amidst many poor boxes - and they had removed the insert from the boxes describing the release, I was really upset! No explanation for removing it either.

Compare this to the open and pleasant atmosphere at Gestos, and the 3-hr conversation I had with the owner about cigars and just about everything else, and cigar journey through that walk-in humidor with plenty of surprises of its own (RA Especiales de Allones! ERDM Gran Coronas!) - there is no question who in Geneva will get my business in the future.

I know Gerard has some different methods that's for sure, the RA Phoenecios 15 count I picked up there had the inserts removed from the box, internal stick on the lid pulled off and regional second band removed.

They didn't want to be seen selling other distributors stock I think.

The cigars were sublime luckily!

That I can understand - shouldn't be seen selling other distributors cigars.

But the RA Perfectos are Swiss Regionals! No reason for them to take them out then. Should still have them on hand if the customer wants them included, as I did.
