Plain cigarette packs to be introduced in UK before general election

Recommended Posts

"She also announced that a ban on smoking in private cars would come into force on 1 October."

I'm not from the UK, does "private car" mean the same things as "your own automobile"? Because if it does, that sucks.

Please someone confirm... Because if dicko's definition is correct, something's gone amiss here.

The ban on smoking in cars/automobiles refers to your own car, but is only when children are present in the vehicle. It's likely to be the first stage towards a total ban...

Plain packaging for cigarettes will happen, the government have been banding it around since Australia introduced it and it's an election year. The UK Department of Health last year recommended that cigars and other specialist tobacco should be excluded from any plain packaging legislation and this was taken as a victory for the UK cigar trade:

5.9

The Secretary of State’s regulation-making powers in the Children and Families Act

2014 allow for standardised packaging requirements to be introduced for all or any

tobacco products. Except for Regulation 10, which applies to all tobacco products

and implements – a requirement under the new EU Tobacco Products Directive

(see

5.14 – 5.17 below) – the remaining regulations are intended to cover only the

packaging of cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco at this stage and not specialist

tobacco products, such as cigars.

5.10

Data show that the prevalence of cigar and pipe smoking in England is much lower

than cigarette and hand-rolling tobacco smoking and that a very small number of

children and young people use this type of tobacco. In 2011, 18% of people aged

16-19 years smoked cigarettes, but 0.2% of this age group smoked cigars and 0.1%

smoked pipes. Today, almost all cigar smokers are male and over 25 years of age.

Pipe smokers tend to be male and over 20 years of age.

By contrast, hand-rolling tobacco is very popular among smokers, including younger

smokers. In 2011, some 30% of smokers in the 16-19 age bracket in England said

that they mainly smoked hand-rolled cigarettes.17 Among children aged 11-15 years

who say they are current smokers in England, 39% smoked manufactured cigarettes,

24% smoked hand-rolled cigarettes and 37% smoked both.

5.12

We propose that standardised packaging not apply to specialist tobacco products at

this point, given their low rates of use, particularly by young people. Regulations for

standardised packaging could be extended to specialist tobacco products in the future.

The press yesterday specifically mentioned cigarettes, there is no mention of cigars or pipe tobacco that I've seen so far. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

I wonder if any one single person ever in history started smoking whatever their pleasure happens to be due, even in part,to the pretty colours on the packs! Biggest pile of **** I've ever heard! Of course we'll continue to see all the dribbling apologists for the drunks and junkies because, bless them, they have a disease(!!) whereas smokers are just filthy,anti-social animals.

I tend to think it is destructive for government to take the role of parent to adults. LIBERTY can be destroyed slowly, insidiously, by technocrats who think they are doing "good"

As a cancer doctor, I understand that moderate cigar smoking is associated with a very low risk of cancer. Second hand smoke is overhyped (except constant exposure in small enclosed spaces). And the outdoor banning that is rampant is propaganda and social engineering garbage. I was at a cancer committee meeting recently where somebody said the American Cancer Society is trying to get e-cigs banned. Even though there is no data on those being a hazard, the feeling was they wanted to discourage acceptance of "the hand to mouth smoking type behavior". I could not believe I was hearing this garbage. I actually spoke up, saying this represented social engineering that contradicted the founding concept of Liberty.

We may be far down the road of PC madness, but don't give up. Speak up. Join CRA........

There is no disease more catching and prolific than stupidity. It enters the body via the minds ability and desire to learn. This process is fostered by a less than free media and the infection of public places of learning such as the school system.

Genetics certainly plays a role in the pandemic as the history of personal triumphant freedom and tyrannical disasters from past lives is not passed forward by the parents as they are too busy on social media, cheating on each other, purchasing useless products and attempting to be something that God never intended them to be. One of which is a single parent... Another is perfectly safe in every situation and free from worry, a utopian state that will never exist.

As child rearing is removed from the parent, as flawed as they are, to the parent State, the disease spreads further and faster!

There has never been a creation more insidious to social progress than the social program. Want proof? Wake up, take a trip downtown, and open your eyes!

God help us!

With as many people killed by cars It would not shock me if in the future they target them to become generic as well. After all it will be for our own safety.
