beamer Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Been away from the forum a bit as of late; Jumped back in to an MBA program and we're expecting our first child next week. With that in mind, contemplating having Rob keep an eye out on a December '14 box that would hold up for, say, 18 years? Figure it'd be fun to be able to give the kiddo a cigar from their birth month/ year. Yeah, yeah... they might not like cigars, smoke what you like, etc, etc, but play along... What do you purchase with a December '14 Box Date to lay down for 18 years? Let's cap the box price at less than approx $400.
garbandz Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 A box of Sir Winstons or LGC2 if any are made in that month. Monte 2 are a safer bet, they are more prolific, but it's the whole idea that's so appealing, so if the box was not a Dec. box, the idea still works. So,if you cannot get the first choice due to production constraints, get what will be the best for the occasion......... I would say Esplendido, but they are outside your price range,Lancero just fits your budget..... 1
Puros Y Vino Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Cohiba Esplendidos / Sir Winstons / Partagas Lusitanias / Cohiba Lanceros
beamer Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 Hmmm... Lusis... I hadn't thought of them for some reason. They're definitely a favorite. I suspected there would be overwhelming support for the larger cigars, especially when considering the aging potential. Appreciate the recommendations. A good chat with Rob will help narrow down what's been looking good when he gets the December stock in.
beamer Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 Ha, I had a feeling the Winnies would be popular!
topdiesel Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I did the same thing a few months ago for my sister & brother in law and Rob suggested a box of PSP Sir Winstons. He might have something different in his war chest, so a pm to him would be well worth it. He will probably respond to this post as well.
ha1fway Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Aging potential aside, other than teaching lessons about nicotine sickness, do you really want to hand an 18 year old kid a Churchill for his first cigar? 3

topdiesel Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Aging potential aside, other than teaching lessons about nicotine sickness, do you really want to hand an 18 year old kid a Churchill for his first cigar? Who said anything about first cigar. Just because they are 18 or 21 doesn't mean it will be my kid's first cigar. I will also not be expecting my kids to take their first drink when they are legally allowed at 21. 1
PapaDisco Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 It's also a good idea to think about the cigar packaging if you're going to age that long. Sir Winston's are a good all around bet because they're made well and come in wood, not cardboard. So prioritize cabs instead of dress boxes. That might mean having to go for a 50 stick cab in some marcas. I think the Lusitania would also be a good aging stick, but it comes in the cardboard dress box. Likewise the Punch and HdM. If you can find any of these in tubos, then you're problem is solved. R&J Churchills in tubos come in a dress box of 25. Then, I'd also favor storing these sticks in zip locks or shrink wrap for LT storage. Nino does this (check out his posts on the subject here) and he's convinced me of the efficacy of it. The churchills I've had from the Habanos aging program (good storage but simply in the cigars' own boxes and with plenty of air circulation) have a tendency to get pretty light in flavors after 10 years. Perhaps this is a good thing for an 18 y.o.? 1
dangolf18 Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I'd honestly go for a HQ/PSP 50 cab of RASS or a few boxes of 2014 ELs.
earthson Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Ramon Allones Gigantes Or a 15 box of HQ/PSP Esplendidos

CanuckSARTech Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Excellent news, Beamer!!!! Congrats in advance, and best wishes to mom. Agreed on Sir Winnies, or LGC MdO 2 if available. Other thoughts might be QdO Imperiales or Cohiba Esplendidos.

Hunter1974 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I dont think I could age a cigar that long .lol I would be scared of 2 things A . I would die and some one else would get them or B. They wouldnt get them and they would rot or be thrown out!
