dowjr1 Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Thought to finally give one of these boys a go after sitting it in my pre smoke 58rh bag for a few weeks. A little chilly here the day after Thanksgiving with a crisp but slight breeze...time to walk the Shepherds at the soccer fields. Stick had a nice color...not too pale but quite rugged looking. I might even say ugly. But rolling a think stick like this can't be easy right? Quick clip and draw test with no problems. It lit easily enough and my walk began...and that is where it ended. Some basic tobacco taste, maybe even a lead or metallic flavor. About five mins into the walk it went out. Hmmm. Relight and start off again. The next 40 minutes were much the same...little flavor and lots of relighting. I was so looking forward to the great flavors I hear about on these...sweet cream, etc. So I'm not sure if the batch needs more time or if I just got a bad one. To me I thought they just tasted green still. Not sure how long everyone likes to age these. Either way was a bit let down. Thoughts?
ramon_cojones Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 if i had a nickel for every time somebody tried a new (to them) cigar and said it was terrible only to come back later and say how fantastic they are...well draw your own conclusion best pl in the lineup, then again i don't enjoy any other pl
Smallclub Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Give them some more time It's not only a matter of time. I started to smoke this cigar almost 15 years ago, and I still find a recurrent problem in each box: the blend is inconsistent, you can have a delicious one, followed by a concentrate of acidic bitter orange peel… I love this cigar but I must admit it's the one I've binned the more often. 1
Maplepie Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 followed by a concentrate of acidic bitter orange peel… The chemist in me is growing rowdy..........
Sophistic Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 way too young for a pl, 5y min in my experience
earthson Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Let them settle. I've got the same boxcode. I store them low (62%) and dry box them for a day or two before smoking. It's the only way around waiting for several more years.

Are you stating that storing at 62rh and dryboxing for a day or two is in some fashion bypassing a several year process? That sounds a bit overly optimistic to me. I understand we all have our preferred methods of caring for our cigars, but your last sentence seems more wishful thinking and less fact.

When cigars are too young, they're too young whatever the storage conditions. Actually at a lower humidity they tend towards harshness and acidity, at a higher humidity they tend towards bitterness.
Guest RobustoClubHavana Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I have two boxes of AME Oct 13 and so far the 5 I have smoke have all been fine my Humi cabinet sits around 66RH Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I haven't touched the box yet, but if I do soon, I will find this thread and update with my thoughts. They've been stored at 65% rH / 65 degrees since I received them.

In side by side comparisons I've done with aged (~5 years) vs unaged (less than 2 years) stock, I have found that the right amount of dryboxing approximates aging. Is it the same as waiting around? No. Are the flavors, aromas, and enjoyment comparable? For me, yes.

So one day or two of dryboxing approximates 3 years of age? IMHO that's more a luck of the draw, given the inconsistency of this blend. btw, people who want to accelerate the aging process, generally store at higher RH levels and raised temperatures…
Maplepie Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 btw, people who want to accelerate the aging process, generally store at higher RH levels and raised temperatures… What're the risks of that, though?

As far as luck of the draw, I've had about 7 or 8 from this box and they've all been great.

dowjr1 Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 For the record, my CC humi is right around 65rh...so should be no storage concerns.
Onelove Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I have boxes from AME April 13, AME Oct 13 and I think BMS April 14. Just nubbed one from the April 13 box that was great but two days ago pushed through one from the same that to me was sub par. At $4 US per stick I don't expect much and am pleasantly surprised more often than not.
mgravito Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 While I think age may help the other cigars in the box some, I think it was just a bad stick. No amount of age is going to make that any better. I went through a box of 25 recently and I do think they are approachable young. I would just chalk that one up as a bust.
DWC Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I've smoked halfway thru my first box (same as OP's AME MAY '13) of these and I'm also not overly impressed. They do keep getting better as I get thru the box but even a 'good' one is still mediocre. Only one out of 12 I would consider really enjoyable. I too miss what others rave about with these. I would much rather reach for a PLPC. I haven't had a bad one of them yet. -Dan
