WarriorPrincess Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 For those how haven't heard that this weekend (Friday Saturday and Sunday) we have the G 20 Summit here in Brisbane. Needless to say that security has increased for the last 2-3 weeks around Brisbane in preparation for this weekend. They have given us a public holiday on Friday and most of Brisbane is leaving town for the long weekend. We here at FOH will be working, no rest for the wicked, but all postal and courier services will not be available on Friday resulting in no shipments to be sent out that day. Greg will do his best to send as much as he can beforehand and then catch up Monday when things are back to normal Thanks
WarriorPrincess Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 Out of curiosity has anyone else experienced a G 20 Summit in your City in the past?
Baldy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Hmmmm....did not know of any G20 summit. You sure you're not declaring Friday a national holiday because Rob is out of town? All the extra security is to make sure Rob is escorted out of town.
Baldy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Out of curiosity has anyone else experienced a G 20 Summit in your City in the past? Yes we have, Calgary, AB, Canada. Biggest pain in the arse. Big disruption, whole downtown was basically shutdown, anti-aircraft missiles in our parks, huge waste of money.
Ken Gargett Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 complete pain in the arse. we only have it because the monumental ego of our former tosser pm - krudd - thought it would be nice for him to have it in his home town to make him seem important to the world (sorry, to make the world realise how important he is). thankfully, we won't see him. meanwhile, it has brought out the absolute superstars of aussie journalism. one tv reporter interviewing one of the organisers - "you were here when we had the 'modern family' visit. how does this compare?" seriously? how does the visit of a bunch of admittedly funny actors compare with having the leaders of the world's 20 major countries compare! some days, you want to shrivel up and wish to wake up on a different planet. 3
dpodiluk Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 We had a G8 here in Calgary a few years ago. Security was tighter but I think it was before 9/11 so was not too crazy.
Ken Gargett Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Biggest pain in the arse. i see we have almost identical thoughts on it.
Maplepie Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Out of curiosity has anyone else experienced a G 20 Summit in your City in the past? Yupp. The G-20 Toronto summit was a thing 4 years ago. Great as it had such large riots and lawsuits that it deserved its own Wikipedia page. I remember a few Anarchist (loosely termed misnomer) came from Quebec and started rioting in the streets for the sake of rioting. The protest was humerously protested afterwards. Rightly so due to a few police brutality incidents. I still occasionally see news articles in the local paper about those who were affected/victimised/charged.
WarriorPrincess Posted November 11, 2014 Author Posted November 11, 2014 it is bordering on total stupidity what is going on !!! Luckily our office is outside the "Red Zone" otherwise I think Rob would have had kittens if we couldn't get to work on Friday.
oliverdst Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 As far as I remember there are always some clashes. 1
Baldy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 We had a G8 here in Calgary a few years ago. Security was tighter but I think it was before 9/11 so was not too crazy. Nope it was right after 9/11. Some report said we spent $300 million for 2 days. I've worked in and around downtown most of my life and it was crazy. That's a lot of rum and cigars in Cuba. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28th_G8_summit
subiemech Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Was a real mess when it was in Washington DC. Security and protestors all over the place. The city should have shut down before the mobs shut it down.
Ken Gargett Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 it might actually be fun - saturday is likely to be the hottest day of the summer. won't affect those in air-con meetings but it is going to make for some seriously short-tempered protesters and police. throw in that we are smack in the middle of thunderstorm season and there is a good chance of one then, plus westerly winds which will fan any local bushfires... it really shows how much thought went into the timing and location.

Am I the only one who'd like to see special agents rescuing some self-important prime minister from a rutting red kangaroo attack? Then again, I am one of the Quebec anarchist Maplepie was referring to...

Brah Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 The summit in Toronto was a slice. Remind me, what do all the heads of state accomplish at these events?
Baldy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 The summit in Toronto was a slice. Remind me, what do all the heads of state accomplish at these events? Photo-op, some nice meals, drinks and private gift exchanged. 2

rckymtn22 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 The summit in Toronto was a slice. Remind me, what do all the heads of state accomplish at these events? Spend a crap load of money to protect so called important people for 2 days.
Hash Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 an interruption of normal lives for no real gain.Photo opportunity, watch out for selfies.
leftimatic Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Just more nothingness going nowhere using tax payers hard earned dollars to pay for the trip. One's back does get sore packing these lumps of shite around.

Luckily our office is outside the "Red Zone" otherwise I think Rob would have had kittens if we couldn't get to work on Friday. Our workplace is advising 90 mins transit times from hotel downtown to airport. Plus the added fun of the airport being locked down for VIP movements. Surely Cairns would have been a much better spot to have it, put em in tents if there's no room!An IL-76 (soviet origin cargo plane but could be Chinese) just flew over my house a lil while ago and made the windows shake - good times!

An IL-76 (soviet origin cargo plane but could be Chinese) just flew over my house a lil while ago and made the windows shake - good times! And that same workplace is being made (along with other airlines) to carry extra holding fuel for every arrival into Brisbane this week. And..... we also have to carry fuel for an alternate airport (and it can't be Coolangatta just down the road). End result, probably about an extra $250,000 fuel burn cost for the week. The G20 is making it truly rooted for local businesses.
