“Scholar” Edition Review

The backstory on this stick is that someone was selling them heavily discounted since they all have severe damage to the wrapper. The scholar, college student, in me could not resist, so I had to buy some Edición Regional to try myself. Let’s see if the cheapness in me made a mistake.

Upon closer inspection this cigar is one of the more heavily damaged. With the wrapper spilt almost halfway. The cigar itself is quite large with a ring gauge of 50 and a length of 5.6 inches or 141 millimeters. This is my upper limit in ring gauge since anything larger would just be a jawbreaker. The golden-brown wrapper emits a soothing sweet herbal aroma, while the cold draw reveals a deep rich chocolate. At this point I cannot contain myself and I begin to toast the stick ever so carefully hoping that it burn correctly.

The first puff begins with a wonderfully delicious nutty cedar, however the draw is incredibly tight. Think of trying to suck a clogged straw; no innuendos intended here! As the stick progresses the flavors begin to be more intense and the draw loosens. Now an incredibly savory sweet herbal flavor joins the nutty cedar. The burn is great considering the significant damage to the cigar and also incredibly smooth. No harshness present whatsoever! The first third is very complex with notes of zesty citrus, chocolate, honey, salty pretzels, and homemade bread coming through as well. Moreover the burn itself was absolutely perfect at the end of the first third. The Gran Cano is performing absolutely amazing.

The second third begins with a blast of sweet floral notes. I’m in nirvana! As the second third progresses I’m hit with a mixture of bread and wood. Then I’m bombarded by a deep deep milk chocolate and sweet cedar afterwards. Will the madness end? On cue the ash elegantly fell at exactly the halfway point. The second half of the second third culminates with honey glazed graham crackers.

The last leg of the journey begins with an explosion of herbal honey. The smoke is now creamier than ever with some bread added back in the mix from the first third. The citrus is also becoming a more pronounced grapefruit-like flavor with some coffee in the background. The finish was superb, but the nicotine got to me so I had to lay it to rest before the nub. SUCCESS!!!!!

If you are looking for a great Edición Regional I could not recommend the Gran Cano enough. It simply overwhelmed my taste buds and put me at ease. This is my top cigar of 2014 as of yet edging out an Opus X lancero I reviewed blindly somewhere else. Thanks for reading my manuscript and hope you enjoyed the review my BOTLS!

Sounds great! I haven't tried these but stocked up on the short robusto, I'm guessing H&F kept the lineage somewhat similar, they really did make them taste like nothing else in the hsa catalogue haven't they

It was a spectacular stick. Let me know what you think of the short robusto!

Wow! Sounds like nothing else. Enjoyed your description of this cigar. Definitely will be picking up a box soon.

Thanks it was a pleasure to smoke. Hope your box gives you just as great performance as this little bugger!
