Discontinued or Current Production

For me this question is based on Trinidad, would it be better to invest in 24 Coloniales that are still being made or a 12 count robusto t box for basically the same price. What are your struggles/buying options when it comes to discontinued smokes? Do you just by punch punch instead of tracking down a box of Black Princes? Dip 3 or settling for monte 3? What do you end up doing most of the time? Also if you could help me decide that would be appreciated!!

I forget about them and move on, no point falling in love with something I might not get hold of again. Plus i'd also rather have twice as many for the same cost. If money wasn't an issue i'd buy up all the discontinued, but unfortunately it is.

I think it depends (what a terrible answer, and no help really. Lol). For instance, dip 4s seem to be something that people LOVED. And I mean LOVED. So in that instance, it makes sense to stock up as much as you can. But if it is a stick that was in the rotation, but wasn't a "favorite", then maybe move on to something else. Unless you can get the discontinued readily and for a good price. (Sorry, again, this isn't much help.)

These are all different cigars. Like mk says, buy what tastes good unless you are trying to profit down the road. That's a different story.

If the Ts were available at or near release cost, they might be worth it if you enjoy them - otherwise, I feel the same. I guess if one is a collector / hobbyist / investor, it might make sense to seek out the rarities. If one acquires cigars to smoke and enjoy, as Marc mentioned, go with what tastes good and is more readily available. In the end, if you want them - buy them

If a marca I enjoy has been boned out by discontinuation, then I usually hunt down discontinued sticks in an attempt to experence a different dimension of that marca. This really depends on price though. I'll pay a bit of a premium for a discontinued box but wont pay 3 times what they cost when they were regular production.

If I'm not normally a big fan of the marca, or there are lots of vitolas currently being produced then I tend to look else where because I can often get 2 boxes of a cigar I enjoy for the same price as a single box of discontinued sticks.

A good example is Partagas. I'm not a massive Partagas fan. Of the vitolas I've smoked, I enjoy 898's, Shorts and PSP2's but thats about it. There are plenty of discontinued Partagas vitolas I could chase but then I'm yet to smoke through 50% of the marcas current production I tend to look elsewhere.

Diplomatico on the other hand is a completely different story. I love Dip 2's and really enjoyed the Collection Privada (Spanish RE) so I went on a hunt for discontinued Diplos, eventually amassing a decent stash of Dip 1's and Dip 3's

I buy what I like. If it happens to be discontinued, I buy more when I find them, but I don't really chase them.

The only stick I get excited about is the La Gloria Medaille d'or #2.

Currently available,older stock,vintage stock.

I want any of them,and will pay to get them.They represent my ideal cigar,and I ration them closely.

Depends what's your outlook on Cigars. Do you buy to smoke or buy to invest?

I don't have the capital to invest so I just buy what I've heard smokes well and what I usually enjoy. There's no point IMO buying anything overpriced as you can usually find an alternative that's just or almost as good.

I try for a happy mix of both. I love aged cigars, but hate the premium they chase. (See BGM @ over $200) so I've decided to try to put away several boxes that I like and think will age well, and I also chase the bargains and grab good well aged cigars that I like to smoke now. Nearing a thousand stick inventory, I am realizing that I'm nowhere near at the level I need to be to smoke at my current desired rate and also age a significant stock.

Long story short, buy more cigars!!

Current production for me. I spend money on cigars not making or trying to make money. I just smoke them. Obviously I smoke what tastes good for me. When they cut off any what I like I just move on. There are so many and so many good ones out there. Don't care much about what was good if I cannot buy em anymore. Pointless for me. So current production is my way.

I buy what I enjoy and smoke what I buy. Not rich enough to buy and store. So with CC I will basically buy what smokes good out of the box.

I do collect Opus X cigars for some unknown reason andi do smoke then as well. Currently have over 20 different Opus X aging. But even all my other NC purchases are to be enjoyed within the next month or 2

To answer the OP, I'd go for the Robo T. Might as well have a dozen of those on hand (they'll never be cheaper) and pick up the Coloniales down the road.

I still buy cut cigars (or packaging) I've enjoyed - to smoke, not as an investment.

Can't pass up cabs of BCE, BPC, Punch SS#1, RS11, Parti SdC and PdP when they show - long time faves.

Some of the LGC, SP, Diplo and Trinis (Robo T), along with assorted Coronas and Lonsdales/Cervantes tend to spark my interest as well.....those formats are rapidly dwindling!

Regardless, most of my acquisitions of late are current production with the occasional Regional or LE.
