allow me to jump back on briefly, as this is too good to miss. the brizzy river has never been a model of purity!

by chance, there was a beer from a few years back, that was locally known as "brisbane river bitter".

this came from england, by the way. saw nothing on it here. mind you, it could be just another nasty fabricated attack on us as the ashes swirl down the toilet.

MAN CATCHES HORROR BUG AFTER DRINKING ‘RIVER BEER’

9th December, 2013 by Andy Young

An Australian man has developed a huge stomach growth after drinking a beer that had fallen into a river during a fishing trip.

JohnMacDonald.jpgJohn MacDonald was on the Brisbane River when he dropped his beer, he immediately fished it out of the water and carried on drinking. Just hours later the 60-year-old became seriously ill as a mystery bacteria made his stomach balloon.

MacDonald told the Sunshine Coast Daily that after heading to hospital he was initially prescribed antibiotics to fight the infection. But just over a week later he was admitted to hospital for surgery. That initial operation failed and he underwent a second procedure that also failed. Following that MacDonald fell into a coma and his family were told that he was unlikely to pull through.

After being transferred to the Royal Brisbane Hospital, John came round, but has been told that he needs another six operations to cure the problem. The first was scheduled for last week, but that had to be cancelled due to a shortage of beds.

MacDonald has now turned to the press in the hope of finding a doctor somewhere in the world who might be able to help with his problem.

He told the Sunshine Coast Daily: “I want to tell my story to the world in the hope that someone somewhere might answer my prayers and finally get me well – I’m a good bloke and I want to be around for my kids and my little grandchild so if there’s a bloody good doc out there that can help, then give me a holler.”

He added: “Clearly the Brisbane River is far more polluted than people think – it was a split second decision on my part – a stupid one – and I have to live with this for the rest of my life.”

Horrible story and really feel sorry for the guy even though he made the choice to drink the beer in the first place.

I'm a firm believer that what you consume is really an important choice as ultimately, it's your body it goes into and also, exits.

Also to answer the initial question as per the thread topic, nope, never enjoyed or thought about a river beer. We don't have river beers in Melbourne, seeing we have the Yarra, I hardly doubt any person would want to consume anything from this river.

Agree it's pretty horrible what's happened to the man and I hope he comes out all right in the end. Hope the tongue in cheek above didn't offend.

I believe I have had a lake beer or two but luckily the consequences weren't quite so grave.

I grew up skiing on the Brisbane river and use to wakeboard most mornings before school and uni. Put the boat in at Brekky Creek and use to ride all through the city, when that was allowed, and right up to Fig Tree Pocket and further. I have fallen off next to, a sheep, a cow, a wheelie bin, a fridge, a telegraph pole and what I am pretty sure was a large bull shark. Was just under the surface and I hit it pretty hard. Felt just like a rugby tackle, so I know it was something alive, as it took off quick, was definitely human sized. Brisbane river is ace! There were dolphins under the story bridge last year and supposedly a healthy population if platypus much further up!

Used to tube down the Apple river in Wisconsin. Had many a river beer. Don't even want to know what was in that water considering there was a couple thousand other drunks tubing with me.

Mind my asking if this article is true as there's a whiff of hoax about it.

It's featured in a couple semi-respectable Brisbane publications. But I still reckon it was a pre-existing condition. Poor guy either way.

Jesus and Mary... That looks horrendous. My prayers go out to that man. Didn't know Australia had that sort of pollution.

People actually fish from a river that would do that to a person? Seems odd. But, anyway... to answer the question, heck yeah I've had river beer. We used to take innertube trips down rivers. Tie a couple of six packs to the tube and let them float in the water to keep them cool. As you're floating down the river, water will invariably get into your beer (either from splashing or from dropping the thing into the water) and I've never had an issue. (Well, not from the water anyhow.) Of course, we didn't got tubing down rivers that were suspected of being infected with only god knows what... so that might be a difference, too.

Cheers,
