Hash Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Sorry if this was brought up before, but for those who smoked the Monte 520' and the Cohiba 1966, how do they measure up, and if you want to stock on one which do you choose.
nikesupremedunk Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 The 520 smoked better for me and the 1966 was pretty disappointing. I have a box of each resting, but I would get the 520's if I could only choose one.
mk05 Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Had a 520 sent from the festival and it was just marvelous. I think my love for the Monte 520 isn't a secret. It did recently go sick, but I can still recall how much I loved the intensity of that cigar. YUM. Also had the 1966 early, and it was actually really smooth and gentle, like a light and subtle Genios...think a malted chocolate (Ovaltine) version of a Siglo VI. A lot going on in that cigar. It's not straight forward like the Monte 520 or other ELs with the EL taste. But then, as the 1966 started shipping at most vendors, it seemed (at least to me) to lock up and entered the sick period. It was unfortunate.
BMWFan Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 They are both really great cigars so you can't go wrong with either. Obviously the 520 is a better value at 2:1 price point.
CaptainQuintero Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I think it really depends on your style of cigars, if you love Upmann and QDO you might find yourself regretting forking out but if you're more a Bolivar and Partagas guy then they might be right up your street
melies Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Love both, but I don't think they have very much in common, The 520 for me is a power house, like Captain says more in kin with Bolivar or Partagas, full bodied and with and ending that knocks you out (a.k.a. strong) The Cohiba is more subtle but not without power. I smoked my first one young, and at least for me it has the potential to be one of the classic, more thought after cigars ever. Why not get 5 of each and decide which one suits better your palate?
CaptainQuintero Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I guess price has to come into it if you're on a budget, 50x QDO coronas or 10 Cohiba 1966 If you're budget is...larger then it's less of an issue I suppose!
Knvb Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Might just be my tastes but i much preferred the 520's......
Orion21 Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I would rather have any of the book cigars vs the 1966. The 520 is very good, but at the current asking price it's too much. I picked up a few boxes when they were on sale and they were still $20 each. I have had $10 898's that were much better than the best 520 I have smoked. I don't think I will be participating in the $20 per EL cigar program going forward.

Skyfall Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I've had spectacular boxes of both, but if it was me, and I had to get something non-regular production, I would take advatage of the current sale on the HU Royal Robustos!!!!!!!!!
Hash Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 I saw that the Cohiba 1966 was voted the # one cigar by members of the forum ,no mention of the Monte 520 though, I will have to try both .Thank you all.

I've got the box of royal robustos I bought in Cuba under a deep sleep as the singles I tried left me flat. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=19.390033,-81.404449
CanuckSARTech Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Haven't actually had a 520 yet, but the 1966's are wonderful!
