CigKopf Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I'm going to have laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery on Friday, and will be bored while missing work for a few days. Each time I search the web to try to find out if it is fine to smoke a cigar after this type of procedure, the only results show answers for smoking cigarettes, or marijuana. I don't smoke either of those things, so I don't think those answers apply to me. I only smoke 1 to 2 cigars a week, and I would love to have a smoke or two while I'm on my mini vacation. Does anyone know if it is fine to smoke a cigar while recovering from a minor surgery, or have some personal experience with this very thing? Thanks
paulF Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Probably best to ask your surgeon i guess and best of luck with it all!
olotti Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 My advice is since you'll be on some kind of narcotic or possibly non narc pain killer is to wait a week. The pain meds kill your taste buds as well as do other nice things like make you constipated. I'd wait till you get your pain under control post surgery and then go from there, no since in wasting good smokes ya know. You'll know when you feel "right" and then when you do try smoking. I just know from friends and with a medical background what pain meds do and while they do work to make one comfortable it screws things up in other ways and taste is one of them. Hope your surgery goes well and here' s to quick healing.
CigKopf Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Thanks for the response guys. I asked my surgeon when I had my consultation. She said it probably doesn't really matter, but she seemed really unsure. She is a surgeon; she knows how to pull your organs out, but it was obvious she didn't have a definitive answer to this type of question. Guess it makes sense to at least wait until I am not taking the pain meds. No point in smoking something that I can barely even remember.

Exactly Id wait atleast a week to get your pain under control then after you get off the meds you should be good to go. JMHO.
scottm12 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 cigkopf: Stay away from the smokes or any kind of tobacco. I work as a nurse in post op surgery. The nicotine in it prevents the body from healing and your wound will take longer to to come together and also the chances of infection go up. I would stay away for at least 2 weeks.

More than likely she didn't want to say yes and then possibly face a malpractice lawsuit down the road. Good luck with the surgery and here's to a speedy recovery.
El Presidente Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Best of luck with the surgery ..heal up. Cigars will always be there for you. Some days i wonder if i would ever take my own advice
Jeremy Festa Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I recall reading somewhere that Churchill once had a recuperative cigar after surgery? ;-) Best wishes none the less!

This is the theoretically correct answer. The wounds from laparoscopic surgery are small, and you're talking about one cigar, but best to be cautious and wait a while.
Smooth Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Been there many times, the nicotine from one or two cigars over a few days is so negligible it won't effect your healing... The relaxation will help
lemmiwinks Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I had a minor "procedure" a few months back. No more babies here - lol. Not the same ball park as you but I had an insicion and pain meds too. Smoked the day of, after and the next - didn't find that the meds affecting my taste that much, and as Smooth said it did help in the relaxation department. Good luck and here's to a speedy recovery.
sam Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I smoked a cigar in the afternoon after a hernia repair in the morning. No problems. ----sam
canadianbeaver Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Not to poke fun but have you ever driven by a hospital and seen patients outside, even in winter, hooked up to IV poles and in blue gowns, smoking? The headline on this thread reminded me of that right away.
ZinZan Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I've done that before but it wasn't for cigars but for ciggies. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
AussieCanuck Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 At first I thought you were asking for suggestions for a post surgery cigar ie a celebratory cigar. Clearly not the case but might I suggest a Siglo VI ? ?

CigKopf Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Surgery went well. And, to make it an even better week, I received a sampler of 8 robustos! Not sure If I can wait more than the 5 days that the Bolivar was in transit.. Thanks everyone. Much appreciated, especially scottm12 for an actual answer. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone standing in front of a hospital smoking while holding a pole with an IV bag hanging haha.
Ken Gargett Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 i've got a good mate who has just gone through major surgery. hopefully out soon. i'm keen to give him a big cigar to celebrate but i'm thinking it will be a no. his was a lung transplant. he has never smoked anything but he was rather keen, if he had known exactly when the transplant was about to happen, to have a cigar. he figured that as they were taking the lungs out, it couldn't hurt. it all happened in far more of a rush than anyone expected so no chance. good luck with yours.
