Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I flew into El Paso Tuesday and crossed the border to see my wife and her best friends family. My wife flew here from Cancun the same day. We are here for a few days to accomplish maybe the single most important thing in our lives right now - her US visa. The medical exam was MUCH quicker than expected, although the technician kept asking her how she knew she wasn't pregnant. Today we had the scheduled visa interview. After 14 months in this process, we got the very detailed letter telling us of this appointment about a month back. The letter explains all the items you need to bring with you. Never did it mention that you need to complete an online form to "confirm" your appointment, so my wife was turned away this morning. It also didnt say that you first go to an "applicant assitance center' first to get photos and fingerprints. I went back with her, got pretty freakin angry with some clerks. We went to an internet place in the same plaza as the consultate and paid way to much to get the form completed and printed. We now have an appointement tomorrow morning to get the photos and prints, and an hour later for the interview. Hopefully, she will exit the 6 hour maze with her visa package, and we can then cross the bridge into El Paso to get her in the US and her permanent resident card. On another note, we had dinner last night at simply the best (in terms of cuisine) chinese restaurant I have ever eaten at - yes, in Juarez Mexico! Of course, we also happened to be dining with the Governor of Chihuahua and a bunch of his political cronies - along with about 25 armed police and half as many secret service type guys. Usually this would make you feel save, but this is Juarez folks. We ate our dinner, left and there was no incident. I have travelled to Mexico for over 30 years and lived there for 2 - that notwithstanding, I didnt like having my back to the door! Anyway, wish us luck tomorrow. If all is successful, I will have a special cigar picked out for when I return to Cayman Sunday
Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Bonus alert - the wife is learning how to make home made flour tortillas! One thing she never learned growing up. I think I might be in heaven!
jacktarnold Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Best of luck. Glad to hear the long road is almost complete.
Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 thanks for the well wishes bros.........we were denied, we are required to file a waiver, more filing, more fees, another friggn trip here at a later date. wife is pretty pissed/disappointed at the moment and doesnt want to bother - i will hire an atty to do it for us and by the time our next interview is she will be over it.....friggin system
Orion21 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I am only hypothesizing, but could owning a business that sells products illegal in the US be hurting your cause?
melies Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Our prayers with you brother, sooner than later everything will turn out ok! keep those hopes up!
Nino Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Again : La Esperanza es lo ultimo que se pierde. Good luck !
khomeinist Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Definitely hire an attorney. The visa application process is quite the headache. Let somebody else do the heavy lifting.
Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Again : La Esperanza es lo ultimo que se pierde. Good luck ! True! I liked it the first time I read it! Taking it to heart now.
Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 I am only hypothesizing, but could owning a business that sells products illegal in the US be hurting your cause? Nah. I dont own it, she does, and its perfectly legal for her to do so. Its just the system, and its pretty effed up. It wont stop us from living our lives - wife should move to Cayman with me pretty soon anyway. Its just something that for now makes travel easier and in the future we will need.
kiwifruit Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Isn't she automatically a citizen through marriage?
Nino Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 True! I liked it the first time I read it! Taking it to heart now. Rush - me alegro y te deseo toda la suerte del mundo. No pierdas la esperanza.
Rushman Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Isn't she automatically a citizen through marriage? Nope. Especially if you are outside the US when you get married. If inside, even illegally, you get automatic temp residency.
jacktarnold Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Sorry for the disappointing news. Best of luck on the next time around.
kiwifruit Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Nope. Especially if you are outside the US when you get married. If inside, even illegally, you get automatic temp residency. Thanks. Never knew that, guess movies aren't a valuable resource for legal intricacies.

ironchefscott Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Good luck with all the red tape. I remember my sister and brother in law's battle with the same thing. It was tough but worth it in the long run!
