As you can tell by my avatar, Jay-Z is to me what Bruce Springstein is to ken...

One of my regular music website posted this article:

Good to see him having a meal at la guardia and taking pictures with the school kids, and Beyonce lookin as fine as ever.

He is mad about his cigars too, i would like to see his the personal stash he brings home with him... Provided the US Govt. is none the wiser lol.

I'm sure they went as "Ambassadors" promoting good will. I wonder who scheduled this honeymoon, Jay-Z Im sure. Cant imagine the stash he's bringing back and Im sure it'll all get through somehow. Good for him that's what I say.

That's not exactly true. Any US citizen can go to Cuba legally now as long as you get a "people to people" license.

You don't need to be a celebrity, although the trips aren't cheap.

We had friends of ours from St. Louis join us for the festival last year.

Ryan,

looking into the FAQ in that people-to-people Insight site I found this :

Can Americans travel to Cuba?

It is illegal, and still highly regulated by the U.S. Department of Treasury for Americans to travel to Cuba independently. However, any American can travel to Cuba with a valid passport, provided they are traveling under a license issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Insight Cuba is licensed to take any American with a passport to Cuba on one of our People-to-People Tours.

Looks like it's not only expensive but also quite bureaucratic as well and you have to be part of a group.

It is expensive. You might remember Rick and his wife Chris who joined us, February last year? They joined us for dinner in the Moraleja. They spent about $2,000 each for the trip, excluding flights.

There was quite a bit of documentation to be filled out but Insight Cuba took care of most of the hassle.

On the "people to people" trip, travellers are expected to stay with the tour guide for the week.

I have heard that a 10 cuc tip for the tour guide can take care of that little formality..innocent.gif

Rick and Chris spent most of their week with us last year.

Edit. I know $2,000 may sound like a lot of money, Rick and Chris aren't millionaires. I can remember Rick saying that he has been wanting to make that trip for 50 years..So absolutely worth it for them.

To be honest, if I was a US citizen as interested in Cuban cigars as I am, and there are plenty of people here far more interested in cigars than I am, I would very gladly give up buying 5 - 10 boxes of cigars one year to afford a trip to the place where they're made. A no-brainer.

The Australian crew, Rob Fox and Mexicano Rob ate at that table.

It's in La Guarida... Great place and an amazing building with some beautiful photo opportunities.

Right - remember them, nice couple and very interested. You're right, 2000 for a week excluding flights sure IS expensive ...

My opinion is this..when you have as much money as Jay-z and Byonce...You can easily buy your way into a cuba trip. Lord knows Jay-z loves his cigars...I think one of Byonce's conditions to perform at the superbowl halftime was to have a shyte load of cigars in the room for Jay-z.

I'm not so sure on the photos being photoshopped, it's hard to tell however the quality is not that great I will concur.

I've watched many interviews with jay-z as he happily puffs on a cigar, and reading that article in CA I think many people would share his opinions on smoking cigars and why he does it.

As long as guys like Jay-Z smoke cigars and people follow him, we will have this wonderful industry alive and well. If we don't, the numbers will decline and the anti-smoking lobby, along with people who cannot afford it will make it suffer. More power to the guy.

What a sad state of affairs we are in as free individuals... This is not a comment about JZ or people that follow him. Thinking that my freedoms depend on any celebrity, makes me sick!!!

I was mostly referring to the economy but I agree - having a celebrity take up a cause can get a bit thick. I am thinking about Bono...

While I cannot state the intent of another... I see you saying it as you see it. I see it the same way sadly.

You act in a movie, you become an expert. Hell, Robert Redford is making movies of groups of murderers where individual members are canonized and made professors at Universities!

I have little faith in celebrities.

We need more enthusiasts smoking cigars and sharing the experience at all levels; celebrities or otherwise and I tip my hat to all my cigar smoking brothers and sisters. -pig.gif

Sorry Lisa, I don't understand your comment. I may be too far distance from what most people see as "popular" or don't understand how Jay Z is a role model, but I don't think Jay Z has as much relevance to the cigar industry as your statement leads on. I could have completely misunderstood it, that very well could be the case.

I think some people are getting carried away...

There are many people on this board who are passionate about travel to havana, the original post was to show that jay-z and beyonce are the same way inclined, jay-zs cigar smoking was actually a second thought.

For what its worth i actually really respect them for it, jay-z and beyonce are two of the music worlds wealthiest stars with the world at their feet, they could have went anywhere they wanted but they chose havana for reasons personal to them. As you said lisa, more power to them.

And regarding jay-zs cigar smoking who are we to question why he does it?

Bastian: you seem to be of the opinion that he does it for show and that he shouldnt be taken seriously as an enthusiast, even though the article you linked clearly states he smokes cigars becuase he enjoys them.

I say dont look into things so much...

Just my two cents

My thoughts exactly when I read this on-line yesterday.

I just wish that I had the money to go - When I go, I want to explore and not be tied to any 'people to people' group. Unless that people to people group where Prez, Smitty, Ken, and the rest from here.

Skyfall, I was just saying that people need to keep interested in cigar smoking. If seeing someone like Jay Z smokes cigars , the activity will continue on a larger scale.

As for travel to Cuba, there are always loopholes for the celebrity/politician class. It is in the interest of the media and local governments to allow these people to visit.

Haven't really heard anything by neither Beyonce or her husband - and won't comment about his cigar knowledge, but they sure have good taste in food ( or a good guide to Havana - which I'm sure they have :-).

After that dinner at La Guarida it was dinner & dance at La Fontana next day - another top place in the list of my favourite Paladares in Havana :
