brazoseagle Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I love Oysters every which way you can eat them. These by far, were the biggest oysters I've ever had. They were awesome! Most were " 3 biters". The pictures really don't do them justice, but just look at the size of the empty shells next too the saucer plate.
brazoseagle Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Have you tried the Rocky Mountain variety? Some of those can get pretty big as well! The ones you have there are pretty mammoth though! We call them "Calf Fries" but yes, I love Rocky Mountain Oysters. I have about 10 lbs. in my freezer.
Smokntaz Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I love me some Oysters. Those look delectable
Ken Gargett Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 we have a few different sizes tho those at the upper end! there is a small restaurant in bordeaux that does pretty much bugger all bar oysters. you can get mixed plates with half a dozen species or more. some of those are massive. assume some of our european brothers can advise on that?
dangolf18 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Where I'm from, it's easy to drive up to Hog Island Oyster company...best oysters on the planet (other than France). The largest ones are not always the best. My favorite are the Kumamotos...small little buggers. Love oysters.

sengjc Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Whoah... What variety are they and are they from Australia?
brazoseagle Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Whoah... What variety are they and are they from Australia? Texas Gulf of Mexico Oysters, fresh! Where the bigger ones are the better ones.
canadianbeaver Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Look yummy! Biggest I have ever had are Pine Island from the west coast but honestly they did not do much for me taste wise. Fresh Malpeques, Kumamotos (also very pretty) but lots of others I just can't name from memory.
stargazer14 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 In Tampa, had the best oyster po' boy yet at a little place called Shrimp & Co. in Ybor City during a crazy Mardi Gras parade. Love oysters raw and cooked.
Ophidion Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Is the restaurant near a nuclear power plant?

khomeinist Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Smaller all the way. Tomales Bay my sons!!! They do grill those behemoths down here. Not bad. Not bad at all. I was raised on the little bastids though....
stogieluver Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 +1!!!! The smaller, the more flavorful. + 2. The Appalachicola Bay oysters from panhandle of Florida are small and the best I've ever eaten. Smaller oysters almost always have more flavor than the big ones. Like I tell my wife...bigger doesn't always mean better. Hey Brazos, I love oysters any way I can get them, too. If you're ever over this way, stop on Mobile Bay at a place called The Bluegill Restaurant and try their chargrilled oysters. If you've ever eaten the ones at Drago's in New Orleans, I promise you the Bluegill's are even better.
dangolf18 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Yep, btw, not only are Tomales Bay oysters the best (Hog Island oysters come from Tomales Bay), they are so cheap at the source. Can get 50 small oysters for $35. Fancier, larger ones are usually $0.80-$1.00. It's actually worth making the 1.5 hour drive from San Francisco, so you don't end up paying $3-$4 an oyster in a restaurant or brasserie. To each his own though...I've had quite a few good larger oysters as well...I especially like the French style flat oyster. With smaller oyster you get less of the plump flavorless meat and more salty/minerally flavor imo.
