El Presidente Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 R&J Cedros Delux no 1,2,3 are very seldom talked about these days. I have always enjoyed the "3" but never been too fussed on the others. Having said that, I barely ever smoke even the No "3" these days. What are your thoughts on this line? It seems like they have been around forever...and yet I never see them being smoked. Who are the Cedros fans amongst us! .....let us know why or why not
CaptainQuintero Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Like most RyJ I want to enjoy them, but pretty much everyone that I have smoked has been completely dead, at best a bit of cedery tar and nougat for the first 6th and then flat as a pancake. I'm really surprised them have survived the deletions, the size of the RyJ catalogue is huge, but 90% for me has been on par with Piedra. I really hope Habanos put's some love into RyJ. Right now I feel like I can only choose between the Short Churchill and the Cazadores. I'm afraid to buy a box of anything else. I mean how has the exhibition #3 and #4 survived when so many other greats have gone, does any retailer actually sell a significant number of the cedros/exhibition #3/#4 etc? I kind of hope for a new line to replace the cedros/exhibitions/corona/pcs and have some of the greatness brought back to RyJ. The brand value of RyJ is huge, before I got into cigars it was the only Cuban I could name. I hope they can get back to sweet cherry, coffee, herb, sweet ceder. If they are attempting to blend cardboard and damp shed then they are doing a great job of it with the cedros et al!
Habanos2000 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Great brand, poor product. I've had the cedro 3 in the past, but it has to be at least 10 years since the last one. As a rule I stay away from any RyJ as there are so many other excellent smokes to choose from without having to roll the dice.
Sutton Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Had to pitch the only one I have ever bought . Pulled the wood sheath off and found so many little holes. Didn't even bother after reading about those pesky bugs
headstand Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Just came in from the cold where i sampled a cedro deluxe #2 from an HQ box that quite literally arrived at my door today. Not complex at the start, but enjoyable enough by the end. Smoke got more dense in the second half. I was looking for the cherry flavour and I think I detected it. Will set them aside until summer when I can enjoy them more slowly. Perfect construction.
cigcars Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 My first experience with R&J En Cedros was what turned out to be a box of fakes. I was very new at acquiring Habanos. I thought this cigar was just crap and avoided it at all costs. Then a sampler pack was made available of different singles of which one of them was (to my dismay) an R&J En Cedros No.3. But by then I'd come across legitimate sellers. I smoked the No.3 and HEAVENS!!! W-O-O-O-N-N-D-E-R-FUL!!! This was in 1998. I don't actively seek out any en cedros items too much (don't like having to decide what to do with that cedar sleeve!), but I have all respect for R&J En Cedros - now.
maverickdrinker Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Never smoked any of them. Rarely see them at get togethers or Herfs or in box passes...
android Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 It's been awhile but I do enjoy the #3 very much...will smoke them while working in the yard or twisting wrenches in the garage. Nothing to complex but a tasty smoke & doesn't require my full attention.
khomeinist Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Cedros de luxe with lots of age are excellent. These are old school and should not be smoked young. The Cedros are underrated gems but is sorta ridiculous that the Partagas SDC 1-3 got cut before these.....
88keys Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I'm a fan of #3. As khomeinist says I get an old fashioned vibe and they improve as they sit. I also like that they seem unusual at this point. I can't think of anything else that they resemble. A long time ago (turning 56 this weekend!) I thought #1 was one of the greats. During the bad period virtually every one I got wouldn't draw, like other lonsdale sizes. I gave up and haven't tried one since. Only partly apropos, I got a few R&J Churchills to try after not having one for many years. I had my first just tonight. The flavors were weak and generic. Not enjoyable or encouraging. I noticed absolutely no marca similarity to the Cedros 3 which are the only R&J I ever have anymore. I guess the Cedros line may be the next classic to get the axe but I'll be disappointed when it happens.
mazolaman Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Agree with the age thing. I like these tighter rolled cedros, but they are way better after at least 5 years, really woody and perfumed, but subtle. As no-one smokes them, you can find aged boxes around. 2 and 3 are the best, coronitas y cedros are pretty bad, imo.
cottierm Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 They are fun to look at, generally alright cigars, but way too cedary for my taste. Best, Michel
thechenman Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I'm a fan of both the Cedros 2 and 3. They aren't part of my regular rotation, but I have them on hand for when I want a nice light and flavorful cigar. The sentiments expressed above are right though. These cigar definitely need some age to show their potential. For me at least 3 years of age...at 5 even better.
riazp Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Cedros no.2 was the first cigar I ever smoked. But yeah I dont bother with the en cendros line or most RyJ's for that matter...
kiwiman911 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 bought a box of coronita's in cedro for my GF, she tought they looked cute with the cedar. Now she smokes my BBF because her taste have changed. I will smoke a coronita once in a while and they are just ok, not a smoke I would call a go to but nice very light and not complex for the odd time you just want to smoke a quick one
bassman Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 Greatly enjoying a box of 07 Cedro #1s. Medium bodied, spicy & no draw problems at all.
bassman Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 Let me also add these need a few years age to pick up that wonderful cedar flavor. I'm also a big fan of the RyJ EX#3, which also needs age.
charlesod Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I've only bought and smoked one box of each and that was years ago. I remember them with pleasure (but not enough to buy anymore ). I really like the packaging. The cedar sleves are nice. I have to say, I prefer the cazadores. Cheap and potent.
Vcool Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 The Cedros Deluxe #3 was the first box of cigars I ever bought, at 16 years old.
canadianbeaver Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Agree with Art. Never see anyone smoke RyJ's except my Cazadores at our table.
Smallclub Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 The Coronitas en Cedros doesn't belong to the Cedros de Luxe line. It's a cheapo that sells for less than half the price of the Cedros de Luxe No.3 (same size) in Europe.
IcedCanuck Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 As a general rule I tend to avoid R&J. I have been disappointed more times then not with them. Wide Churchills are the only thing in their line I touch go near anymore and there are lots of other CCs I would rather spend money on. I have only been into cigars for maybe three or four years but it seems to me the only thing keeping the R&J line going is its name. Everybody has heard of R&J, Cohiba, and Montecristo. If they were ever good in the past they need to figure out where they went wrong and reinvent themselves but they are pure crap now, just my .02.
jazzbass Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 A few years back I was gifted a Cedros and I've never looked back, Love them !!!!!
smokum Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Seeing this thread I pulled a #3 out of an Oct05 box and brought it along to smoke at my sanctuary cabin in the woods. Very good . 1st third was some nice cedar and toasted tobacco but not an overpowering cedar at all...2nd third brought on the dark black cherry that I was looking for which grew more intense thru the last 1/3. All in all I am happy with the years of age.
