Ken Gargett Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 had not seen it for ages and watched it again last night. sensational movie and i found myself wondering how it did at the oscars. made 1983 so presumably up against contenders in the 84 awards. not only does it not get a mention in any category as far as i can see, when i looked it up, was staggered that it apparently got an almost universal panning. brian de palma even being nomintaed in the annual 'worst director' awards. i suppose i can understand - language and violence, especially back then, but as a huge fan of pacino, i actually think that this was his best movie. it is an extraordinary performance. nice that the view of it seems to have been corrected but what an injustice. and what did win? i'm also a very big fan of duvall but... and terms of endearment as best movie??????? Terms of EndearmentThe Big Chill The Dresser The Right Stuff Tender Mercies James L. Brooks – Terms of Endearment Peter Yates – The Dresser Ingmar Bergman – Fanny and Alexander Mike Nichols – Silkwood Bruce Beresford – Tender Mercies Best ActorBest Actress Robert Duvall – Tender Mercies Michael Caine – Educating Rita Tom Conti – Reuben, Reuben Tom Courtenay – The Dresser Albert Finney – The Dresser
CaptainQuintero Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I like a lot of panned movies, Waterworld is one of my favourite ever films! I think the key here is that the vast majority of film critics are utter wankers. Point in case is The Artist at last year's Oscars. If you don't like it film critics will tell you it's just because you don't understand it
winelover Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Scarface is Pacino at his awesome best. I saw the bluray version in the store and am tempted to pick it up but I'd like to know if it has been well remastered - if anyone has seen the HD/Bluray version of The Untouchables you will know the quality I am looking for. Scarface is also a film to watch with high end surround sound as it really brings all the action to life. Great to see how history judges the critics! Cheers Graham
canadianbeaver Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 One of my all time faves, ESP when he is in the giant bubble bath!
Ken Gargett Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 I think the key here is that the vast majority of film critics are utter wankers. i must say that i have not read a david stratton review for at least a decade. i gave up as he spolit every plot, gave away the best lines, completely stuffed so many films. it is beyond me how the hell the australian continues to allow him to review. mind you, for about 20 years, they've allowed mark ella to tell us how good mark ella was week after week after week. and not a patch on either mclean or lynagh. but i digress. not bad, though. from scarface to the glories of the queensl;and reds in two posts!
CaptainQuintero Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 but i digress. not bad, though. from scarface to the glories of the queensl;and reds in two posts! It was pretty impressive!
charlesod Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Pacino has said that Scarface was his favorite role. It's my son's favorite mob movie, that and Goodfellas. It's over-the-top, but thoroughly entertaining. Terms of Endearment? Cockaroacha!!!
westg Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Scent of a woman another classic and Pacino is awesome, break it out and watch it guys. If memory serves me correctly he asks for a Monticristo number one.
OZCUBAN Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Scent of a woman another classic and Pacino is awesome, break it out and watch it guys. If memory serves me correctly he asks for a Monticristo number one. Top film West I totally agree
canadianbeaver Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 He is also magnificent GF 1&2 don't forget. 3 he is fine but the movie not so much.
ramon_cojones Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Agreed Ken, I thought he was brilliant in there. Also do love the film though some of the cinematography is severely dated.
Cohiba Stevie Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 My girfriend bought me that for christmas lol. I agree scarface was effin great movie, but i think pacino was his best in the godfather part 2 and heat.

Was going to mention Heat also and the Insider he has had some pretty cool roles.

nikesupremedunk Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 info on the sticks scarface was smoking during the movie? BHK 56?
CanuckSARTech Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Scarface was great, but I think Pacino was best in one of, if not THE best, cops-and-robbers movies of all time...."Heat". Just....such a phenomenal movie. Outstanding cast, beautifully shot, great editing and sound, awesome script and pacing, just awesome. I like Pacino best in Heat, and then in Serpico.
El Presidente Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I think the key here is that the vast majority of film critics are utter wankers. Some say the same about wine critics
