I saw it last night and I was blown away. If you are a fan of the Alien franchise this is a must see movie. Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron were spectacular. I will warn anybody who is really religious, this movie could offend you. I still believe you should see it as it is a fantastic movie with amazing special effects.

I plan on seeing it a second time to see if I missed anything.

I saw it and was disappointed. The visuals were stunning. The story was way too sketchy for me. The actions of the characters baffling and quite honestly laughable. This is not Ridley Scott's finest hour. I still "enjoyed" the movie but the story felt rushed. thumbsdwn.gif

I agree partially with Frank.

I loved the visuals and the concept. I also loved how the cinematography and overall style and design was very similar to the original two Alien movies. The actors were all phenomenal in their respective roles. I really enjoyed everything about what I saw, except....

Certain things were defintely out there (what a certain actress/character was able to do throughout the ending of the movie, considering the event that happened to her). And, some aspects of it (timelines, species development, etc.) don't line up at all to stuff that's already established in the previous Alien movies (or in the AvP storyline, which was a devastation to the series, but that's a whole other issue).

Overall, it looked wonderful, and it definitely was a great start point to put a prequel in place.

But my guess is that with all of the inconsistencies and open loopholes, this is destined to become a prequel trilogy, and we'll see a few more pre-Alien(s) movies to fill in the gaps.

It was still a damn good movie, a solid 8 to 9 out of 10 for me. Well worth seeing in it's full glory at the theatre, that's for sure!

Saw it last weekend and it is an awesome movie  I'll second those who said if you are a fan of the Alien series you definitely need to see this.

We are in total agreement on this movie. Visually fantastic but the gaps in logic turned me off, and I can usually take a lot of that to see a SF movie. Pretentious is the word I was looking for!

Agreed. Most SF calls for "suspension of disbelief" but I couldn't hold in my disbelief at some of the scenes. And of course, an extended version has been announced for the Blu Ray release. An extra 20 mins of footage. That probably won't undo some of the bad calls in the movie but it may flesh out an already too rushed story IMO.

Despite my misgivings, I do hope there will be a sequel. There's a good story to tell here. Next time Ridley should leave the meathead writer(s) that ruined LOST off the production crew.

Saw it today and couldn't agree more.

There are spoilers

I really liked the cinematography and Ridley Scott's usage of "pace" in the movie. In the beginning to the sandstorm, I really enjoyed how it felt much like the "space odyssey." Very expansive, vast, and almost overwhelming - especially the landscapes - conveying depth of time, space, insignificance of humanity, etc, all that artsy crap.

The anticipation builds up and you kind of start to get the release when they land on the planet. However, the script/storyline - for whatever reason was lacking and incontiguous - so RS makes up for it by pushing the pace. Less questions are asked when you are trying to keep up with the movie as plot takes over. When they find the severed head, it turns from a very slick, well thought out screenplay, to a seemingly hurried, illogical sequence of events.

It's really not fair to have RS assume we can skip the character development...I bet he was thinking the movie should have been split into two parts. Arguably he skips David's development because his mind is by definition unknowable, but he has wayyy too much influence from the moment he starts the first hologram. What's the deal with him just going and touching stuff without asking? His actions have severe consequences and the plot is so overly dependent that although the audience has clear problems and questions regarding his actions, it is deemed irrelevant.

One major nitpit for me was the confusion regarding the scene where the captain of the ship sees the pile of bodies and does nothing. To me that was supposed to be a very powerful scene - a "make your career" scene - he totally crapped out. That's the scene where he realizes that we made the wrong assumptions on this planet, and that the whole crew is going to die. The actor does a terrible job conveying that and trying to pass off the mound of dead as irrelevant to the lost pair; and the audience, unknowing this as bad acting, becomes even more confused on top of the quickening pace.

I have my own theory on what happens next but interested on others opinions.

I think that this is an excellent film. Has the statute of limitations passed that we can discuss all aspects openly?

I thought David was one of the best SF characters I have ever seen on film. I agree with Marc that Idris Alba's character was not as well developed as it should have been.

The philosophical ramifications of this film are quite interesting. The opening sequence through the title display is stunning.

I dunno guys. I don't get the hate in this film. Yeah. A woman can't do acrobatic feats post c-section. Is that so important though? I tend to focus less on minor details and more on the cinematography and thematic strands.

Anyway. Post your thoughts if you have strong feelings about this film. I have seen it four times already.

Saw it last week for the first time (yes, I am slow...).

I loved it. Best Alien-related movie since the original Alien, IMO.

i saw it on a plane a while back. enjoyed it but certainly not to the extent where i would rush to see it again or can even remember much about it a few months later. worth seeing but, for me, not anything really special.

Saw it recently as well. It is as close to an audio/visual masterpiece as you can get, however, I wasn't a fan of the acting as a whole. Nor of the "throwaway" nature of 95% of the characters. IMO, it does not touch Alien/Aliens.

Thanks Marc. Will read that over and post some thoughts.

I generally agree that the characterizations weren't great (minus David of course). Noomi Rapace is NO Sigourney Weaver. However, I really enjoy the general themes, which I frankly think are better than the Alien series.

Not to say Prometheus is superior to Alien. It is not. I just find the idea that humans looking for 'god' might not like what they find to be incredibly amusing.

I'm a big fan of the Alien series, but I just couldn't get into this film. There are too many glaringly huge loopholes in the plot for me to ignore. I mean, what company spends trillions of dollar to fly 3.27 x 1024km (why kms instead of light years?) away from Earth on the "belief" of 2 scientists? Bit thin there. The only thing I can think of is because the lot of them got booted off the planet for extremely shoddy and reckless experimentation on extremely significant archaeological discoveries.

Don't get me wrong, the cinematography is fantastic, but the plot is like a sieve... it just doesn't hold water.

Well. The operation was financed by one man's ego. I don't get the criticism there. I do agree that the crew motivations are a bit suspect. They should have had a scene discussing their obscene rates of compensation for going on this ill-fated trip. Put to sleep for months on an extremely dangerous operation would certainly make me want to be set for life upon returning home.

I'm 2/3rd through the original script and am outraged that this wasn't followed.

Edit: finished the script, that would have been a hell of a movie. the chambers of weaponized eggs in different evolutionary states would have made more sense on screen as well, rather than ambiguous scene with the big room of vials, the head, and the green gem.

So true, I saw a site (forgotten the link) that had a comparison of parts of the original script with the on screen version and it wasnt a pretty picture. Basically most of the inconsistencies and weak character motivations/development in the movie were the fault of the rewrite. How does this stuff happen all the time with scripts, it is an all too common story

Im an Aliens fanboy but even I was a bit let down by Prometheus: all the lost potential. Although I am glad the "Engineer as an alien Jesus" story arc didnt make it into the movie - that's a bit OTT IMO
