CaptainQuintero Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Towards the end of last year I decided to explore the last of the Le Hoyo range with the Du Maire and Du Gourmet. With the Sun not making many showings this year the thinnger ring guages looked like a good idea. First the Maire a few weeks ago blew any expectations I had about it out of the water. I expected a limp Hoyo with a bland flavour, not at all! Full of the usual Hoyo coffee and cream I didn't want it to end. It's size meant the fun was over in twenty minutes so I picked up a handful of the Du Gourmet hoping for some longer smoking time. Long story short I've been lighting these up like cigarettes! 6 3/4 x 33 Rolled June 2011 Clipped the cap and tested the draw, perfect! I've always been a bit on edge with thinner ring guages but the draw on this is spot on. Dried raisin is the only flavour coming through and surprisingly not even a hint of spice. 1/3 Initial flavours were comprised of sweet vanilla and that metallic tang that you get from grape skins. Reaching the end of the first third the main flavours was a standout rich vanilla with the raisins from the cold draw. Hints of cream and old ladies perfume means this could be a goodie later on! 2/3 By the end of the second third the vanilla had completely gone, not a bad thing as it has been replaced with the standard coffee and sweet cream that Hoyo brings to the table, with just a sprinkling of cinnamon at the back of the tongue. The Sun is out finally in the UK and It's glorious! 3/3 Talk about a meal of a cigar! The cinnamon has gone, the vanilla hasn't come back but they have been replaced by a rich biscuit, combined with the continued coffee and cream it's a fantastic dessert themed ending to this cigar. Not once has it been harsh, just a smooth creamy ride from start to finish. The Des Dieux gets the most noise from the Le Hoyo range but the Du Gourmet has been out performing recent production of the Des Dieux for me, simply great! 91/100 I only have a few of these left, but can't wait to smoke them!
Dbone Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I have been eyeing these and they're in the "Must Buy" list. One of the few long and skinny still readily available. I enjoyed the review Cap.
ramon_cojones Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Nice review. One thing that always perplexed me, people often really enjoy or rave cigars and give them a 91 rating. This sounds like a 94 to me, is this on a scale to 100? I don't really start to enjoy cigars until they're 92-93, a 91 is an alright smoke to me.
ksblazer Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Great review I'm not a big Hoyo fan, but it sounds like I need to give these a try

I think Captain is using the 50 - 100 (yes, old Robert Parker style) scale where: below 50 well... rolled banana leaves (if lucky) 50 - 70 is plain horrible and should avoided at all costs 70 - 75 is okayish, more or less flaws but doing the job whilst gardening etc, etc... 75 is mediocre. Nothing bad but nothing exciting as well 80 - 85 decent smokes (lots of Bang for Buck here) 85 - 90 good to indeed very good smokes 90 - 95 Exceptional smokes 95+ litterally devine from this scale 91 points is something to rave about! Sorry for going OT here and I stand corrected when wrong with this scale, Captain...

ramon_cojones Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I think Rob said it best in a video, then what more could you ask for in a cigar that would give it a 100 rating? How about a 95 even? What do you want in a cigar? LOL I don't know, still doesn't make any sense to me but to each his own.
Michel1968 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 True, scoring is utterly subjective and much depends how much 'weight' you put to certain 'values'. Still, when familiar with someones ratings it's a very quick way to communicate back and forth about a certain cigar, wine, whisky or whatever. Yet, the absolute value of a score is close to nonexistence (IMHO) Back to topic Nice review! I just love the Gourmets, really

What do you want in a cigar? LOL I don't know, still doesn't make any sense to me but to each his own. I don't think a 100 cigar point exists, but I'll still keep looking! It could have been improved by: -Being more rich across the board ala a custom rolled -The coffee flavours could have been more sweet -The raisin flavours could have been more intense as I've had in other cigars -Could have been cheaper -The flavours didn't flow into each other smoothly but started and stopped (young cigar) If it had all of the above it probably would have been in the 98/100 territory. If I had PSP box of these which was five or six years old then I'd expect some 98/100 cigars out of that box.
ramon_cojones Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Interesting, I don't see how this cigar could improve that drastically. I have been meaning to try these for awhile and your review might make me pull the trigger for a good shorter smoke.
Wil Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Great review! I have one in my desktop that I will have to try soon. I think Rob said it best in a video, then what more could you ask for in a cigar that would give it a 100 rating? How about a 95 even? What do you want in a cigar? LOL I don't know, still doesn't make any sense to me but to each his own. The whole numerical thing doesn't make sense to me. Usually it's just an arbitrary figure. For me, I just go with 'Excellent', 'Very good', 'Good/okay' and 'Poor'.
isa Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Great review Captain, & ur review now makes me think abt trying these vitolas - dang
Puros Y Vino Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Great review. I picked up a box not too long ago.
winelover Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Great review CQ and with you on your scoring. I'll have to try some of the Hoyo skinnies when I have a chance.
tdlfoto Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Nice review. Was thinking of picking some of these up ...this helps!
MrDowse Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Great review - really need to pick up some thinner ring gauge cigars. Sounds like this would be a good place to start.
Styler Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Hmmm, sounds like I've got to try one or two of these. Many thanks.
