Jason55555 Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Beautiful day outside in Toronto & Friday /TGIF so decided to grab a Bolivar Royal Corona,Paired this with some Pinot Gerigio Champagne since it was a hot day outside. I love this stuff its 12 bucks at the LCBO and its Light-bodied and refreshing. This stuff taste amazing there Pinot Gerigio have won numerous gold medals next time you pop into LCBO try it trust me it won’t disappoint. On to the cigar..... The First flavour that I get hit with is the earthy taste that I find other Bolivars have. The smoke is very creamy and there a ton of smoke coming off this stick as you can see in the picture. Towards the middle of the first third the flavours get very complex I get hit with a floral taste mixed with a bit of salt (salt only last for few puffs). WOW the completely of this cigar is amazing I've never smoked a cigar that's so complex it just the first third. In the end of the first third I’m hit with a super sweet taste(cant put my finger on what type of sweet) mixed with milk chocolate coffee my gawdd - I wanted to go out that moment a and buy a box of these. Creamy, earthy, floral, sweet, milk chocolate Amazing The Second Third Is where the stick mellowed out now the flavour was predominantly milk chocolate no change in flavour which I didn’t mind at the end of the second third got hit with some spiciness. The Final Third The earthy taste make another appearance, the cigar also starts producing less of a spicy kick now and has moved to more of a creamy espresso flavor. Staring to get a head rush but I think that's the Pinot Gerigio not the cigar LOL (See Bottle) Overall wow what can I say I’ve been on a amazing streak of good cigars PSD4, Reyes, Siglo II etc (knocking on wood) But right now I hate to say it since I love PSD4’s but I think this robusto has taken the PSD4’s champion belt. The complex flavours that this cigar throws out is crazy. Cigar Czar says about this cigar - Starts with spicy notes but settles into milk chocolate and coffee flavours. Can develop honeyed notes. One of the best Cuban Robusto's I didn’t get any spice from this cigar until the end , and I think I got the honey note Czar talks about but just wasn’t that predominant of a flavour just tasted sweet to me. Other than those small points it has everything Czar states. Sorry PSD4 but you’ll always be my #2 go to Robusto BITTERSWEET day. 95/100
brazoseagle Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Great Review, I keep hearing people talk about what a great pairing cigars and Champagne are, I just can't bring myself around to do it. I guess I will try it soon.
Jason55555 Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 First time I've ever tried it usually a rum/scotch guy but it really refreshes your pallet with out adding any flavors to you mouth like rum etc.
NMJoe Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 David, champagne is my favorite warm weather drink while smoking. It just seems to make the flavors of your favorite stick that much better.
NMJoe Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 BTW, I just ordered a box of these. I see that yours is from 2011, but what box code and month was it from?
CaptainQuintero Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 How is the colibri cutter? I like the style of those ones but been burnt by colibri products in the past. My Palio is dying so thinking of a replacement
Lotusguy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 How is the colibri cutter? I like the style of those ones but been burnt by colibri products in the past. My Palio is dying so thinking of a replacement Palio has lifetime free replacement - why not get a new one?
Jason55555 Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Sorry didn't get the box code when I picked it up, just took a quick glance under the box to see the if it was an 11 or 12 yr. As for the colibri cutter I would give it a 5.5/10 yea its mehhhh cutter not as sharp as it should be it fairly dulls fast IMO I've already had to re sharpen mine. It has a good ring gauge size but tends to pinch the cigar cap before the blades do there job (that could be because of dull blade) but I would recommend you look at something else.
isa Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Great review and pics Jason. Agree, these are excellent smokes
maverickdrinker Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Great Review, I keep hearing people talk about what a great pairing cigars and Champagne are, I just can't bring myself around to do it. I guess I will try it soon. David, Give it a try. You wont' regret it. Pairing Champagne or bubbly with cigars is one of my favorite things to do in the summertime. Nothing like Dom Perignon or a grower's champagne with a Cuban cigar. DELICIOUSNESS!!!!!
Puros Y Vino Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 X2. Champagne is great with cigars. It pairs well and cleans the palate. Best with aged cigars.
Savoy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Great review... Have always loved the Brc ... Second only too Epy's
CaptainQuintero Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Palio has lifetime free replacement - why not get a new one? Forgot about that!
Wil Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 How is the colibri cutter? I like the style of those ones but been burnt by colibri products in the past. My Palio is dying so thinking of a replacement How long did your palio last? I bought one a year or so back and not satisfied at all with the cut. (So much so that I don't really want the free replacement!) Much prefer the free Xikar that came with my Cigar Journal subscription!
iGrizz Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Great review! Love the Royal Corona. I just got a box of ten from June 2009. They are the oldest CCs I have obtained so far. I am excited to try on soon
ksblazer Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I've been enjoying the 2011 Boli RC's. Best recent Robusto being put out IMO.
Ophidion Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I'd love to try the newer RCs. I had a box from 09 that were very good albeit not much in terms of oily/dark wrappers. Might have to search out a HQ/Psp box.
mazolaman Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Just finished a box from aug 11.....excellent cigars. Cheers for the review.
