Danashan Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 So, I'm turning 40 in less than a months and I am looking for that special cigar to smoke to soften the depression that comes with that fantastic occasion So far I was less than impressed with cuban cigars (still have a box of Punch Del Punch and a box of HDM Epi #1), but decided to give them another try. Some of my favorite non-cubans are Padilla 32 robusto and Dominus corona gorda, Tatuaje Havana IV corona gorda (I LOVE cg format), many A.J. Fernandez cigars (ManO'War both regular robusto and Ruination Robusto #1). I understand people here do not know or care for non-cuban cigars, but they are the only reference points I've got for you. I can't name one cuban I really liked. Well, 1 HDM Epi #2 was great, the other 2 were meh. Any suggestions for that special cigar? No $50 Behikes, please. I do not want to spend more than $20 a stick. I'll probably order from Czar. Best regards, Daniel
riazp Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Punch double corona, Patagas lusitania or Hoyo DC comes to mind, great 2-2.5 hour smokes.
Puros Y Vino Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I agree with Riaz on the Punch DC or Lusitania. Other great sticks that won't break the bank. H Upmann Mag 46 or 50. VR Unicos. Bolivar Gold Medal.
riazp Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Yeah VR Unicos are a fantastic Pyramides for sure, great suggestion
brazoseagle Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 100% suggest either a HU Sir Winston or a Cohiba Genios Maduro!!!!!!!!
Bcrowell Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Hey Riazp, I have not heard of Patagas. Tell me more about them. ?
mk05 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 The cigars you mention are all medium to full and very nicaraguan. The first 2 cigars you mention are known for their clean tobacco notes, cream, nuts, and some caramel if i recall correctly. Try a trini coloniales, hoyo epi especial...most ccs honestly wont leave an impression if you are used to strong smokes. You seem to like corojo...illusione makes great corojo blends as nc, just fyi. The MoW and HVI are powerhouse smokes...you wont get that imbalance with most ccs. Try a JL robusto, RyJ cazadores, or a PD4. Theres a thread from a couple weeks ago polling strong ccs. You might want to peruse that thread.
Guest rob Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I don't mean to sound like a **** - but maybe give the Cubans a miss for your special occasion and go with the non-Cubans you know you love. it is possible that perhaps Cubans just don't float your boat. Im not familiar with the non cubans you mentioned so cant make a recommendation based on your tastes.... but if you're still determined to celebrate witha Cuban I'd suggest a H Upmann Sir Winston, a Partagas Lusitania or Partagas 898. Also, of youre after a stronger cigar that represents Cuban flavours explore the Bolivar range or RyJ Cazodores.
Orion21 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 #1 - Montecristo Grand Edmundo (or most other EL's since 2009) Other options: Bolivar Gigantes Upmann No. 2 Partagas 898, No. 2 or D4 None will be as dark roast espresso in profile as the NC's you like, but the Montecristo Grand Edmundo will be the closest thing to an NC you will get from Cuba. Also, they will be much fuller bodied and complex than the two boxes you have tried to date. P.S. Not to beat a dead horse, but many Cubans are much better with at least 6 months of humidor time and my experience with NC's is that they are better ROTT rather than with age. If you are looking for a birthday smoke try to see what Czar has in singles and order a few to try. Good luck.
Danashan Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Please keep them coming. I do age my stuff, since I enjoy the journey a good cigar makes. All the cigars I mentioned, I have in ages ranging from 1 to 36 months and they taste very different depending on the age, but (almost) always phenomenal, IMHO. I DEMAND from my cigars to taste great fresh AND aged. May be that's my problem The only cigar I hated aged were Padrons The CCs I have have not yet exhibited any changes to the better with age. Well, may be in another 5 years
Omskakas Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 So, I'm turning 40 in less than a months and I am looking for that special cigar to smoke to soften the depression that comes with that fantastic occasion Why so serious? I'd recommend Partagas 898 to you. It's refined and exquisite but still can kick you to the face.
Habanakane21 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 My 2 cents... Partagas Lusitania, 898, Bolivar Gigantes. Happy 40th btw.. I celebrated mine last year in Las Vegas... I survived... So will you. Have fun
kmagurk Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Smoke a Sir Winston. You'll be glad you did X2 !
dB69 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 ...I DEMAND from my cigars to taste great fresh AND aged. May be that's my problem ... Then you have to go with Ramon Allones Allones Extra EL 2011. Tobacco used for them is aged for two years and they are quite fresh at the moment. They will kick you quite well.
nonameno Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Hello Fellow FOHers, My recommendation is one that has made the top of the FOH charts, but has yet to be mentioned here! I suggest looking at the Ramon Allones Specially Select (RASS). It is fuller bodied, with deep flavors. Thank you and best wishes on your Birthday, Curtiss
Danashan Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 Padron 1964 line regular wrapper, or if you want something a bit stronger, try the Opus X line. Like Rob said, you may just not like Cubans... I'm cold to Padrons. Doesn't do it for me, even 1926. Fresh Opus X is way too strong. After 3 years of aging they are great, that is true. In general, I'm looking for balance with robust favors and complexity. Strength for its own sake is not for me either. תודה על ההצעות אחי!
Danashan Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 X2 ! Sir Winston looks like it should be on th top of my list
Guest rob Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Sir Winston looks like it should be on th top of my list Be warned though! they are not a strong in-your-face cigar... they are a refined, elegant and flavourful one! If you light one with that in mind you wont be disappointed.
mattdivo Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I say spring for the BHK 56 or Cohiba Siglo VI. I realize you mentioned that you do not want to spend the extra dough, but i'll remind you that this is a milestone bday and you should treat yourself.

Well, may be in another 5 years That would make sense since Padrons are already well aged and make very minimal changes over time at home. I understand where you're coming from. I actually also dislike Padrons unless we're talking panatelas. Seeing that I also liked Pad 32/Dominus, and went through the MoW/Tat phase, I would bet that you (would / do) like AF Anejos - they're my favorite go to NCs - and prefer Oliva MB3 over the V's. If so, call the Davidoff on Madison and ask for the Zino Embassy 2009 edition. It's the perfecto. I guarantee that you will love it, if you agree with my thoughts above. If not, disregard! Best of luck,
markmurase Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Smoke a Sir Winston. You'll be glad you did Another vote for the H.Upmann Sir Winston. A consistently excellent cigar. Creamy and smooth with good flavour but not overpowering. Churchill size makes it a good 1.5 to 2hr smoke. One of my favourites.
hdryder Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I know what you are talking about. I always liked CC's but didnt really understand what all the hype was about till one day I was @ a buddys house and he gave me a Partagas D4 and "WOW" suddenly I understood. I'm not saying that is the best CC but any means but thats just the way it worked for me. I think I read that you are a robusto fan so maybe check out Cigar Czar I think there is a robusto sampler there that has 12 or 15 different cigars in it that you can work your way through and hopefully find that one that is going to make you sit back and say "now thats how a cigar is supposed taste". Good luck and happy birthday. Also before you write Padrons off I suggest you try a Padron 1926 Series 80th Anniversary Maduro. They are in my opinion the best Padrons but are a 30 dollar cigar unfortunatly. Cheers Richard
