When I first made the switch from NC to CC about 5 years ago, the cigar that hit the spot for me was Partagas 898V...I see others here have also recommended it. You might want to give that one a shot.

Happy birthday Danashan, and many more, brother. You're getting lots of good ideas for Cubans, but there are a couple of non-Cubans I've really enjoyed in the past-- the Carlos Torano exodus 1959 and the J.Fuego Delirium were both really good smokes.

Have a great birthday, it's just a number after all. I went through 40 and never looked back.

I'm with others who wonder why in the world you want to smoke a Cuban cigar for this occasion when you find you don't much care for them. Stick to what you know you will like -- Tatuaje, Cabiguan etc.

If you MUST smoke a Cuban cigar on your 40th, I strongly recommend the Bolivar Coronas Gigantes based on what you say you like and are looking for.

My recommendation would to be go with a fresh RyJ Cazadores. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks everyone!

I got a package from an incredibly generous (.45 caliber) BOTL on this board with some aged CCs with stellar reputations. :2thumbs:

If I can't find a great stick among these sent to me, I'm hopeless! Which may not be a bad thing, since my pocketbook will certainly thank me :surprised:

One day we will have to stop thinking that the taste of one type of cigar can be found

in another type from a different origin, lets be realistic.

If Cuban cigars are not to your liking compared to NC's, where's the problem ?

It seems to me that you enjoy more straight forward & spicy robust tasting cigars

then cigars that are more on a sort of evolution into a subtle elegance and refined

strength. Cubans are not " In your face" cigars and I don't mean that in a critical

way aimed at NC's.

So why would you want to find in a Cuban what you already have with NC's ?

For me, you will not find,in a NC,anything similar to a Cuban nor the other way around.

They are in no way comparable, SO ?....................Smoke what you like :)

I have to say I agree. On a special occasion, you should smoke something you love. Birthdays, anniversaries, etc., are not days for aspirational smoking, they're a time to enjoy something reliable.

I don't mean to sound like a **** - but maybe give the Cubans a miss for your special occasion and go with the non-Cubans you know you love. it is possible that perhaps Cubans just don't float your boat.

Im not familiar with the non cubans you mentioned so cant make a recommendation based on your tastes.... but if you're still determined to celebrate witha Cuban I'd suggest a H Upmann Sir Winston, a Partagas Lusitania or Partagas 898. Also, of youre after a stronger cigar that represents Cuban flavours explore the Bolivar range or RyJ Cazodores.

If I am opining on advice, I say listen to Rob here. While I am not going to give individual cigar suggestions, as they are likely worthless to you, I back his first paragraph. When I read the original post, this is exactly what I was thinking.

Suggestions on what others like is just that. This is a good way to experiment, explore and discover your own tastes and how they mesh with others. If they don't mesh with others, certainly someone has got to be wrong... right? No way! When it comes to taste, you are the only one that matters. If an excellent smoking experience is what you are looking for on a certain day, the best way to get it is follow your own palate, not that of another.

I could reccoment tons of cigars that I like. What good does that do you. While CC's are my choice they might not be yours.

Good luck on your birthday and I hope you enjoy whatever your choose. Smoke what you like, not what someone else likes!!! -Piggy
