SCgarman Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Many of us seen the review of the Rafael Gonzalez corona extra on the old czar deck. Many of you have probably never tried this brand, and would not consider some of the lesser known brands. In my opinion, these are great cigars, but the packaging does not do them justice. What other brands would you not consider trying due to being lesser known or having a bad stigma associated with the brand?
CaptainQuintero Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 +1 on the guans in terms of actual cigars in terms of sales I'd probably say: -Cuaba (although the shape probably makes people buy initially) -Fonseca (Construction issues( -La Gloria Cubana (literally no cigars available apart from RE in the UK, at least QDO has a reasonably strong following in other countries.

CaptainQuintero Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I'd say Quintero Vegueros Rafael Gonzales How very dare you Sir! OT- I think Quintero is one of the top 5 selling marca with big followers in Spain and one house in England
Trevor2118 Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Guantanameras Actually not in the Habanos portfolio. They are now manufactured under license in Cuba by Internacional Cubana de Tabacos, S.A. (ICT). Since 2005, the marketing of machine-made cigars was undertaken by the newly created Promotora de Cigarros S.L., located in Spain. Habanos has tried to put as much distance between themselves and Guantanamera.
AntiVirus Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I would think it would have to be Vegueros considering that as of this year, there last two vitolas still in production are on the deletion list.
Rushman Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Given trevor's education on machine made cigars no longer in the habanos portfolio I would say cuaba
NJP Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I will try anything once as long as it won't make my eyes water or feel guilty/ dirty.
cigcars Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 It would appear Montecristo Opens are on you guys' %&hit list too! Me - I wasn't too put off by them when I tried it. I also don't mind dealing w/Guantanameras either. It might come apart in my mouth but it's still Cuban tobacco with that wonderful flavor, none-the-less
LeafLover Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I don't understand why Rafael Gonzalez gets no love. Quoting Suckling, "IT'S THA BOMB!"
mazolaman Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Cuaba can be excellent cigars. My friend and I smoked a distinguidos each over a fire pit the other night. An excellent cigar, with good nutty flavours..... The only thing they need to do is reduce the number of vitolas. Rafael Gonzalez are also good cigars. Careful, all we'll end up with is nothing but 50 gauge cohiba.
winelover Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Mazolaman I've: I've had 3 or 4 Cuaba distinguidos singles. If you get a good one they can be great. However the bad ones are truly shocking - wind tunnels with no ligero.
nubchin Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Dont know about ligero absence but they do give great flavors when they are great , also I guess they are not meant to be strong so not too bad of a marca for me. The issue with Cuabas is allways after lighting the foot , once I had an under filled foot in one of the distinguidos and smoked it like a billiard pipe . The least favorite right now is Punch Punch , such a long time since I had a good one including a box from 2008 which I finished without a single good one, pure neeeh smokes for me but will keep looking cause some do crave them .
thechenman Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Least popular in the portfolio would probably be the marcas with the fewest remaining vitolas. LGC, Diplomaticos and Vegueros come to mind.
SCgarman Posted October 21, 2011 Author Posted October 21, 2011 I don't understand why Rafael Gonzalez gets no love. Quoting Suckling, "IT'S THA BOMB!" X2, These are very underrated GREAT medium bodied cigars!!
Van55 Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I don't know where one might find later statistics than those listed by Min Ron NEE. In his Encyclopaedia, he gives the percentage of export production of each post-Revoluationary marca for 2000 and 2001. From those statistics one would have to say that Quai D'Orsay were the "least popular" with 0.1 percent of exports in 2001. This contrasts with Montecristo which enjoyed a 20.4% share. Regarding the others mentioned on this thread: Vegueros 0.3% Rafael Gonalez 3.2% !!!!!! Cuaba 0.4% Fonseca 1.8% La Gloria Cubana 0.2% It would be interesting to see similar export percentages from more recent years. Anyone?
Hohenthal Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Some fall in that category not through lack of appreciation, but lack of knowledge / poor marketing, like Quai d'Orsay... La Gloria Cubana is another one, then Rafael Gonzalez and El Rey del Mundo, both wrongly spoken of as "beginners brands".
almudawi Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 How very dare you Sir! OT- I think Quintero is one of the top 5 selling marca with big followers in Spain and one house in England I knew that stating Quintero might trigger a reaction from you mate.. But sadly in a vast market like the Middle East and North Africa this particular marca is not existent
Lotusguy Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Fine - after my Guantanamera entry was disqualified, I have to go with Vegueros - they are so unpopular, the whole marca is getting discontinued in 2012...
Ghabanos Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 To be honest I like montecristo the least...
