Plain facts: other tobacco in sights

Cigars are the latest target in the government's push for plain packaging on tobacco.

CIGARS, cigarillos, loose tobacco and chewing tobacco are the next targets in the federal government's plain-packaging campaign.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon yesterday released a consultation paper explaining how plain-packaging rules for tobacco products other than cigarettes would work.

Legislation requiring plain, olive green tobacco packaging is now before Parliament.

This new consultation will help the government develop regulations on how that legislation, once law, would apply to products other than cigarettes.

The consultation paper proposes that the packaging tobacco products are sold in would be in the same colour with no company branding or logos. They would still have dominant health warnings.

Ms Roxon said the government wanted the approach to plain packaging to be the same as far as possible across all tobacco products.

As many of these products are manufactured overseas, the government's proposals would allow them to be imported without plain packaging. But they must be covered in the drab colour before going on sale.

Options discussed for this include stickers that completely cover the product's original packaging, or purpose-made sealed bags or cigar tubes.

Cigar bands would have to be removed, replaced or covered with a sticker.

The government proposes that brand names and variants could be printed on the plain packaging, as with cigarettes, or handwritten on a white rectangle on the packaging or a white sticker. Submissions on the proposals are open until October 28.

Roxon is a f###ing hypocrite, she was recently caught trying to solicit campaign funds from the tobacco industry.

Hopefully Rob will be able to meet with these people to talk some sense into them...this will for all intents and purposes have a major impact on his business. Cover the box, ok, but remove the bands? cover or place a sticker on them? common really? This really bites

Politicians ....they are a special "breed".

They have gone the whole hog for the "discussion paper".

We have plan "B" locked in place if they go down this track but regardless we will be submitting a proposal with follow up face to face discussions.

Just a pack of wankers.

If they are so serious about smoking why the hell are they spending over a million dollars to supply the illegal immigrants with cigarettes.

Hypocrite

Really not a surprise as there is talk about that over here in Canada too. The government is forcing the tobacco companies to reduce the size of their labels to about 30% of the package and they are also think about having the same coloured packaging for all companies.

Wow, I can't believe it's legal for the Fed to forbid a company to sell their product under their "Brand"!! I am not aware of any other product which legally can not be sold under any brand, or company name. Even the cigar bands?!?

Not sure what the big deal is anyway, Cuba has the cure for lung cancer LOL

What is the point of the plain packaging? Is it to discourage people from purchasing the product? Not sure that will work as it does not (I hear) for Weed, Cocaine, and Alcohol, and many other drugs. Not saying cigars are drugs, but I think the same logic applies here none the less.

Many have already been saying the fancy packaging is not important and they would be happy with unbanded simple bundles of cigars. You just have to wrap the bundles in green and put health warning stickers all over them. If this lowers the price of cigars it may actually increase sales and the government tobacco tax revenue. LOL!!!

someone went to bed one night thinking they really accomplished something. because, you know, people who fork out a few hunny $ are likely to recoil and quit cigars because their wares are not packaged in army green. reminds me of a great quote--> "first as tragedy, then as farce" - slavoj zizek

You guys need to find a group of college students to throw together a fast study of race and color preference. I know you think I am joking but I am not! Once the survey is published you simply call whatever color selected as government sponsored racial profiling of tobacco products where the government is targeting people to kill off.

Gents... when you want to combat radical consumer protectionism, a subset of leftism as history has shown, you must simply think and act and use the same tools as radical leftists! These people want to change packaging because they believe it incites sales. Go with it and simply use their own beliefs against them. Whatever color chosen is going to entice someone! Sorry about the political bias, but you can only combat this stuff when you know who starts it and promotes it. Get on the offense and take it to them.

The more rules there are, the more resources are needed to sustain and support them. Eventually the whole anti-everything movement will collapse under its own weight.

No government is perfect but IMO, the Gillard Government is by far one of the worst ever.

Plain green packaging across all cigar brands? I think this is a great idea. After all, we all know that the colour green is associated with being eco friendly, so that means that cigars are eco firendly too!! I mean, cigars are a totally natural product... much like hemp. :lookaround:

Finally, we'll have the support of large lobbying groups. We can even go to political rallies for the Greens and hand out cigars in plain green packaged tubos as gifts!

Thank you Nicola Roxon for showing us cigar lovers that we now have the backing of a political party!! :spotlight:

Piggy, you can't help yourself can you

Is leftism even a word?!

Anyway,I think most governments do pointless stuff like this, because they have no power any more.

They have no power to take on Tobacco manufacturers, fast food retailers, oil companies etc......lobby groups will get them, they want to win the next popularity contest,so they do pointless round the edges stuff, and it makes them feel great!

So,not really left leaning policies, politicians trying to look busy.

They'll be proposing and another bank holiday next,or making bouncy castles bigger.....

Anyway, sorry to go off topic, have the Australian government already done this with cigarettes?

Pigster

They call you into meetings only to know what loopholes to sow up. I have been around long enough to know that.

The only solution is radical which I am well down the path of. Hoist the Jolly Roger and have them follow an endless trail.

One of the great days of my life. You need an enemy to gird the loins. This enemy is but a beuraurat in diapers and we are 5 years ahead of them.

Cynical but very, very smart!!! This will delay for years to come (Millions spent on all kinds of silly committees trying to overtake themselves on raw political correctness is only collateral)

One of the questions I keep asking myself is - "why"?

I mean, who the f#$k do they think they are? Protecting us all from ourselves? Really, if they're protecting us they need to do a better job of it... because as far as I can see I can still purchase and consume this evil product. After which I will consume copious amounts of legally advertisable alcohol and punt on one of the gambling websites that I saw advertised during the cricket.

Seriosuly, where's Ken when we need him?

Unlike most governments in the world, this one must have money to burn. It will cost a pretty penny to do this work. Unless they are planning to raise taxes on tobacco products to cover the cost of the small army that will be required to perform this meaningless work.
