DrunkenMonkey Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 So if they will be requiring that the cigars be sold inside a particular package or wrapper or bag, does that mean that Rob will only have to take the packaging from Cuba, put it in another govt. issue bag, seal it, and ship it out to us like that? Would that mean we could unwrap the govt. wrapper, throw it away, and be left with just the cigar box as intended, with no bloody tumor pictures glued on the boxes? This sounds like a possible improvement to me. God, how I hate those stickers.
dicko Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Unlike most governments in the world, this one must have money to burn. Unfortunately, they do. Purely for reasons which they have contributed nothing to. If they were in charge in a less economically fortunate country, they streets would be burning.
dB69 Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 SICK !!! Me -> <- Politicians From the beginning of 2012 all tobacco products will be hidden everywhere here in Finland. If you want to buy tobacco you have to ask the pricelist and point a product name you'd like to buy and then the shopkeeper will bring you your tobacco from behind the counter. Do I hate this world?
cottierm Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Already done in Ontario at least. Although not the list, but the packets of cigarettes are indeed hidden from view and you have to name the brand you want to get it. SICK !!! IcedCanuck Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I'm all for this if all the stores need to do is wrap a box of cigars in a box and they can put the stupid stickers on the bags. Then all I have to do is remove the bag and I have no ugly stickers on my box of cigars. If on the other hand they are going to make all the boxes look the same or completely encase the box in some fugly sticker I have an issue with that. This is not going to stop people from smoking cigars it is only going to piss people off and ensure you lose votes come next election. Putting individual stickers on cigars would be a health concern because the adhesive to keep the sticker on the cigar would undoubtedly be full of toxic chemicals that we would then smoke. So wouldn't that actually mean the government would be directly responsible for adding deadly toxins to cigars and thus making their supposed detrimental health risks that much worse? Smells like a potential class action lawsuit to me. I don't want those dog damned stickers on my boxes, on my cigars, or on anything else. Although the packaging does not affect my decision on whether to buy a box of cigars nor does it affect my decision on which brand and type to buy I do not want them to all look the same. This big brother non-sense is a bunch of crap and I think it's high time big brother should get a long overdue kick to the scrotum.

BobKincaid Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Here in the U.S., our PBS just finished airing a three-part Ken Burns documentary on Prohibition. Looked at through the long lens of history, it's stunning to see how misguided well-intentioned people can be. Unfortunately, the present effort in countries all over the globe is indicative of just how prevalent the same attitude that gave the U.S. Prohibition remains. Just as that effort was backed by faux-science, so too is this one, but it has taken root and is now treated as received wisdom. Ah, well! When smoking is outlawed, only outlaws will have smokes. Hoist the Jolly Roger, indeed, Rob!
Colt45 Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Here in the U.S., our PBS just finished airing a three-part Ken Burns documentary on Prohibition. Looked at through the long lens of history, it's stunning to see how misguided well-intentioned people can be. I'm not sure how well intentioned some of these "temperance advocates" really were As a species, we continually fail to learn from our own history. As Burns quoted Mark Twain - "It is the prohibition that makes anything precious." Bob, I don't know if you've read T.J. English's book about the Irish Mob in America - Paddy Whacked, but it goes into prohibition a bit. When all is said and done, the impression I got was that so much is about politics and the buying of votes. The country does not seem to have been as dry as we are often led to believe....
