Ghabanos Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 how can I identify if it is mold? I am seeing shades of green below the wrapper also on some of my sticks. are these still smokable? please help... How do I avoid this? Humi is at 62-63 RH. it is a bit hot, but I live in an area with tropical Temp...80deg F in the Humi trini - green spots BHK - shades of green below the wrapper
zuma Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 To me they look like leaf "beauty spots", I have seen them a few times on trini reyes. Also, since there appears to be no intrinsic "fuzziness" on the spots (a characteristic of mold), thus IMHO it seems unlikely to be mold.
CaptainQuintero Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I know Trini are supposed to have a green tint to them, but I've only ever had a single of them so by no means an expert on them. http://www.cigars4dummies.com/cigar-repair...-on-cigars.html If you're sure your humidity is ok then it looks like it probably isn't mold, they look more like leaf defects to me. It doesn't look like mold to me (it isn't fuzzy/hairy) but luckily I haven't ever seen it in the flesh so I couldn't say 100%
ramon_cojones Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Send those to me asap and I'll take care of the mold problem for you. I can't guarantee they will be returned however
gigabyte056 Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Easiest check, try to wipe it off, mold comes off, discolorations that have no affect on taste do not...
LeafLover Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I don't think it's mold. I believe, from someone else's post, that it's water droplets that has discolored the leaf sometime during the cigar drying/curing process. Don't quote me on this. But if it wipes off, it's definitely mold.
El Presidente Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Just a common wrapper blemmish due to a water droplet/sun
Puros Y Vino Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Not mold. If it does not wipe off nothing is growing on it. I have those blemishes on the odd cigar. Sacrifice it tonight for good luck.
Guest 321contact Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 how many cigars are like that? as others have said mold should wipe off. its nice and fuzzy, grows on the surface of things. Mold can stain but is still would have powdery spores to wipe off. ps. clip your thumbnail
Diamondog Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 The green spots can come from water spots on the wrapper
Dbone Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I'm with the rest, look like "Frog Eyes". Areas found on the wrapper which for any number of reasons do not fully cure while in the curing barns. Does not affect flavor.
MadMax Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Don't look like mold to me either. In the last issue of Smoke magazine there's a good article on mold & plume.
Ghabanos Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Thanks all for your help... I am returning these to the Humi now... Absolutely no fuzz and cannot wipe off as all of u have described... Send those to me asap and I'll take care of the mold problem for you. I can't guarantee they will be returned however Ramon - there are some in the mail. I can't guarantee they won't get lost... I am cheap - no tracking... how many cigars are like that? as others have said mold should wipe off. its nice and fuzzy, grows on the surface of things. Mold can stain but is still would have powdery spores to wipe off.ps. clip your thumbnail Done - see attached... not manicure quality, but done
Ghabanos Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Unrelated but how do I avoid my sticks cracking? Is it just too dry?? See the crack on the bhk...
CaptainQuintero Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Cracks have only appeared for me when re-humidifying a stick too quickly, or when Rob leaves the camera running by accident and Ken's shorts were gradually loosing their battle with gravity. I haven't seen sticks get cracks by being too dry but then again I haven't really had anything go below 60% as far as I know
