ChanceSchmerr Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Hey Guys, As some of you may know, I'm a Canadian Naval Engineering Officer, and I've been waiting the last 6 months or so for some sort of confirmation of what my next ship is going to be, for a year's posting to complete my final training, at the end of which I'll be qualified to be the Marine System Engineering Officer on board a ship (the equivalent of Scotty from Star Trek). I got the word today at last, as my posting message came through - I got the ship that I asked for, HMCS Vancouver! No concrete word on where the ship will be sailing, as everything is currently up in the air with recent world events - but I'll let people know once I have an idea of port visits and when the information becomes public (IE I can actually tell people). Whoohoo! Time for an extra special smoke tonight to celebrate! ERDM Grandes De Espana? ERDM Taino? RA 898? Cohiba Siglo VI? Monte Sublime? What should I wave goodbye to 6 months of agonizing waits with? I'm so excited!!!! Going back to Sea at last!!!!!
CBL Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congratulations! Each and everyone of those smokes are amazing, can you only have one?
mazolaman Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Bon voyage, and look after those di-lithium crystals...
cigcars Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 *I'm so happy for you, Chance! I love the romanticism of the sea, but could NEVER be on it or in it for long - sea sickness would occur to me even on a Merry-Go-Round!!!!!!
tmac77 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Great News Chance!! I was on board HMCS Qu'appelle back in the day for my training out in Esquimalt. Last I heard it ended up getting sold for scrap metal to a company in Taiwan after it was decommisisoned.
dicko Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congrats mate!! Smoke the RA 898, i wish I could try one of these!
Puros Y Vino Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congrats Chance! Time to invest in a waterproof humidor, in case you haven't already.
Wicky Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congratulations Chris! Will you be able to smoke much on board?
tugboat Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congratulations Chief ! Nothing like running your own ship. I've always believed the Engineer is the second in command. Without you the captain is useless in my book. While at sea I've felt the most peaceful than anywhere else on earth. Even after 30 years the sun rising and setting out there are still something that takes my breath away. The Monte Sublime and then the Cohiba Siglo VI is my vote.
El Presidente Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congrats Chris! The life of a sailor!!!! Travel the world, bar room brawls in far flung places, snappy white outfits, blokes and showers. Well done mate. I know how much you wanted this.
thechenman Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congrats Chance...great news. I think the celebration calls for an RA898. Enjoy.
LeafLover Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Congrats for your good fortune! Smoke all of them!
Rehman Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Well done, Chance. Bon voyage et bonne chance to you!
Azksig Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Congrats! I'm thinking the RA 898 as I have never had one so I believe it to be the most special.
Onsto Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Congratulations Chris. Make sure you pop over to the mainland for a stick before you ship out!
Habanos2000 Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 That's one nice looking ship! Congratulations to you sir.
ckearns Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Chance, that's great news. Congratulations! So... what smoke did you pick?
ChanceSchmerr Posted April 9, 2011 Author Posted April 9, 2011 Thanks everybody! I did smoke an RA 898 last night - wonderfully rich, enormously complex, very full bodied despite a decade of age - a perfect way to celebrate! I finished the night with an '87 Punch Petit Punch that paled in comparison. to touch on a few of the points/questions - Those Di-lithium crystals will be fine in my care, as long as they aren't those Klingon crystals like last time - They have fool-proof seasickness patches now that you wear on your neck - barely noticable and 100% effective! - tmac - I can't imagine the pain of hearing that a ship you sailed on was scrapped or sunk. I hope all of my ships become museums or something! - Waterproof Humidor - on it! I can smoke cigars on board, in a couple of locations - there is a smokers area on the forward upperdecks in a place called the Port Breezeway, and sometimes you can go out to the stern, and smoke on the quarterdeck if its a warm sunny evening, they call that "Sundowners" - Tugboat - agree 100% on all accounts - I'm never more free than at sea, and I believe also that the Engineer is the 2nd most important guy on the ship. Unfortunately - the guys with control of all the weaponry tend to disagree - Travel the world - Yup! Bar Room Brawls - Sadly yup! Snappy White Outfits - I love Tropical Whites! Blokes in Showers - uh...i don't know what you're talking about - Ross - Will do, mate - I'll be in touch! I won't be sailing until June 6th...after that I don't know how much access I'll have to the internet, we'll have to see! Thanks again, all! I am so pumped!!!!
