FireDigger Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I am interested to see what FOH thinks after seeing heated discussions on this on other forums.
gmoney Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I think it’s 2. Because I believe you have to do the multiplication before the division.
Davin Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 288. Parentheses, then multiplication and division from left to right.
Puros Y Vino Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 According to this. Do the brackets first so 9 + 3 = 12. Then multiplication with the number next to the brackets. So 2 * 12 = 24 Then division 48/24 = 2. So 2 is the correct answer. I voted for 288 (did left to right).
Colt45 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 it takes three licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop.....
SandmanTR Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 The Google box also shows 288... http://lmgtfy.com/?q=48%C3%B72+(9%2B3)
Smallclub Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 2, of course. Where did you "288" guys learn math?
traded Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I am interested to see what FOH thinks after seeing heated discussions on this on other forums. 288: as stated above by others, parentheses, then multiplication/division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right (not necessary in this case). Confirmed by excel, google, and my brain. start with 48/2(9+3) then 48/2(12) then 24(12) then 288 d
traded Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 ummmmm i dont agree start with 48/2(9+3) then 48/2(12) then 24(12) then 288 how did you get 2 from using this method which is the correct method im almost certain? d
Smallclub Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 how did you get 2 from using this method which is the correct method im almost certain? But your method is WRONG. The terms inside brackets must be solved in priority. Ask a math teacher. I can't believe people are using Google as a reference for this…
traded Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 2PEMDAS 48÷2(9+3) 48÷2 x 12 48÷24 2 Your PEMDAS is incomplete. the MD and AS have qualifiers for left to right because they are at the same rank. P Parentheses first E Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) MD Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) Divide and Multiply rank equally (and go left to right). Add and Subtract rank equally (and go left to right)
Smallclub Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations: The standard order of operations, or precedence, is expressed in the following chart. terms inside brackets exponents and roots multiplication and division addition and subtraction and: For example, in mathematics and most computer languages multiplication is done first; in the expression 2 + 3 × 4, the algebraic answer is 14. Parentheses, which have their own rules, may be used to avoid confusion, thus the above expression may also be rendered 2 + (3 × 4).

M and D are at the same level and therefore you go left to right. Same for AS. d its more like P E (MD-left to right) (AS-left to right) P Parentheses first E Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) MD Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) Divide and Multiply rank equally (and go left to right). Rogers72 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Yep. 288. I forgot MD and DM could be switched by whatever is first left to right.
SandmanTR Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Another confirmation for 288. http://web2.0calc.com/
Stalebread Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 it takes three licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop..... Did you lick from left to right? I was going to ask if you licked between the parentheses but all of a sudden that conjured up an entirely different image. Let's keep it left to right.
ckearns Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 2 is the answer. For those getting 288, you can't divide 48 by 2 until you've done the bracket. BEDMAS.
BlackZ32tt Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 lol i dunno the answer buts its funny to read the thread hehe
