Would you pay $22.50 to eat ice cream made from human breast milk? The question's no longer a hypothetical; the BBC reports that a London restaurant is selling a dessert called "Baby Gaga," "churned with donations from London mother Victoria Hiley, and served with a rusk and an optional shot of Calpol or Bonjela."

The stuff is "expressed on site and pasteurised before being churned with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest" at the über-trendy Icecreamists.

When asked about her motivation to donate Ms. Hiley said it was a great "recession beater" and added "What's the harm in using my assets for a bit of extra cash?"

The ice cream was so popular that it sold out on its first day.

The success was short lived however as government officials have since confiscated the resuarant's supplies in order to determine whether or not the desert is actually safe for human consumption.

This, of course, is not a totally new thing; a Swiss restaurant tried to use the stuff in sauces in 2008 (before getting shot down for health reasons), and a NYC restaurant offered cheese made from breast milk last year.

And even before that, of course, breast milk was widely used as a sort of folksy homemade food for infants.

When I started work at a restaurant about 5 years ago, one of the waiters was having a going away party. I didn't make the party, and boy am I glad for that!

Everyone talked about how great the cake was.

Ricky, the waiter, told me the next day that they ran out of milk when making the cake batter, so, they substituted breast milk.

Half of the staff looked like they were going to hurl when they found out.

This is the ice cream maker. I don't know if I'd ever try it. Maybe after I consume high amounts of alcohol and somebody decided to bet me $100 to do it. Seems like half of my unpleasant experiences in life are the results of that particular combination.

They acheived what they wanted and that is publicity , a simple little thing like that and Lady Gaga looking to sue has given them so much publicity that if they had to pay for it , it would have cost them a small fortune

Great marketing mind behind this and good on them the Restaurant business if hard work and everything counts (I wouldn't touch the stuff personally however :D )

My job is in the culinary industry, trust me when I say that there are other food items people regularly eat that are far and away more off putting than ice cream made from a woman's breast milk.

This article made me remember something I read about a few years back and I looked up the article. If you're not down for breast milk ice cream maybe you'll enjoy these meatballs.

I can't see what the problem is, if people want to buy the ice cream they can go ahead, that is their choice. Don't think I would !

The disturbing thing to me is that we've been conditioned to think that cow's milk is totally acceptable while human breast milk is something to turn our noses up at. The thought of drinking a glass of cow's milk turn's my stomach personally.

I'm no nutritionist but intuitively I would think that human breast milk would actually be better for you than cows milk.

Can't remember what it tastes like though... it's been a while.

. . .

. . .

"Recession beater"?

The final paragraph of The Grapes of Wrath -

"For a minute Rose of Sharon sat still in the whispering

barn. Then she hoisted her tired body up and drew the comfort

about her. She moved slowly to the corner and stood looking

down at the wasted face, into the wide, frightened eyes. Then

slowly she lay down beside him. He shook his head slowly

from side to side. Rose of Sharon loosened one side of the

blanket and bared her breast. "You got to" she said. She

squirmed closer and pulled his head close. "There!" she said.

"There." Her hand moved behind his head and supported it.

Her fingers moved gently in his hair. She looked up and across

the barn, and her lips came together and smiled mysteriously."

Well, its not the first time. I remember one french chef for (around) 10 years ago that used human breast milk in a dessert. I also remember one incident in the US were a chef used human breast milk. The same thing happen then as now, lot of publicity.

The french chef (use google and you will find) I remember said that he liked to use it, but the problem were to find large quantities.

cheers

Maybe we could start the first human breast milk dairy. Imagine a barn full of lactating women... :D

Unless it were to be in a warmer climate we would need better accomodations than that for them. mmm  Brisbane is a warmer climate maybe Ken has some space :)
