TMS36 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Anything which involves one's personal safety. I.E. if one rides a motorcycle don't buy a cheap helmet, etc....
BlueClaw Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 whatever is bought for the wifey !! even if it is a pair of socks... she's a lot easier on me when / if she finds out my personal expesnes on the finer things in life.... cigars, wine, food etc... as the saying goes.. happy wife happy life...
Kangaroo495 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I won't save money on haircuts. Sounds sissy, but I think I've got the wildest hair of anyone I know, so I'm forced to spend a decent amount just to look normal. Never budget on products for my cat. I figure it's not his fault that he doesn't have a job and his own money, so he might as well have a good quality of life. Warm clothes. I'm the only one of my friends who walks around in real fur (from head to toe), and I'm the only one who currently isn't in bed with the flu. But this really broke the bank. Ouch.
aes8 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Mattresses. You spend a third of your life sleeping on them
ajgagnon Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Good shoes/boots. I got accustomed to great hiking boots after working in the silviculture business for a while (tree planting after clearcuts in the Canadian boreal forest). There is no substitute for good footwear. I'd attach a picture but my time there predated digital pictures. Hmmm, that and good fly fishing gear.
Puros Y Vino Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Good quality food. Cheap eats will ruin you in the long run. Wine. Totally agree. Though there are some good values <$10/bottle. A mattress. You'll spend a good third of your life on one. Don't go cheap here. Shoes. I used to buy cheap "nice" looking shoes until one particular burgundy pair sawed into both of my achilles tendons while on a short walk. Let's just say I could feel the blood pooling up in the heel of my socks. Ever since then, I've spent over $100 avg per pair and have never had an issue.
mbrody Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 A snowblower. The best thing I ever bought. Get the model that will handle your worst snowfall.
dicko Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Warm clothes. I'm the only one of my friends who walks around in real fur (from head to toe), and I'm the only one who currently isn't in bed with the flu. But this really broke the bank. Ouch. You can't post that with no pics!!
dicko Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Mattresses. You spend a third of your life sleeping on them Good call. Pillows too.
dicko Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 A snowblower. The best thing I ever bought. Get the model that will handle your worst snowfall. Not a problem in WA good asnwers guys, keep em coming (strong use of multi-qoute function there by me, sorry for spam posts lol)
bassman Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Never buy discount seafood. If you think those cheap cigars a couple years ago were bad....
sandholm Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 From the top of my head.... My wife - Keep her happy, i dont buy anything cheep for her. I keep her happy she keeps me happy. Shoes - I walk around a lot, need good comfortable shoes (sneakers are not shoes) Suit - If its not made to fit it dont look good Pen - I love fountain pens, not a collector a user Watches... Cigars - enough said Wine - Champagne, Cognac Food - Get good raw ingredients, otherwise no point of cooking Stove - .... some friends think I try to compensate for something, my wife knows i dont Cooking knifes, personal i like the classical Sabatier Lion knifs, fits my hand Mattress - 1/4 of my life i spend there (and some of the time i sleep Climbing gear - from ropes to underwear (its my life) Skis Mollskin books - paper and pen is still the best way to capture information/thoughts Coffee - I need good coffee... cheers
Turrbo Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 In no particular order... Watches - I want to know that there were many little Swiss men working on what I have on my wrist. It must be mechanical so when the sh!t hits the fan and we're in a digital war I will always know what time it is. Food - We put high octane fuel in our cars to run better but it surprises me how many people will put McDonalds in their system and expect to run like an F1 car... Knives - Nothing pisses me off more in the kitchen than pinching food rather than cutting it!! Cigars - I'm no where near the level some of you guys are but if I'm going to spend an hour thinking to myself when I smoke a cigar I want happy thoughts more in the tune of "wow what a great cigar" rather than "this tastes like ****, and I have 24 more of these poo sticks in my humidor... great" TV's - I've found that buying the top of the line TV of the time will last you longer because it will take a while for it's features to trickle down to the mid level models. I've easily amortized the cost of higher end TV's by having them for a bit longer. This rule MAY be used on other electronics. Scotch - read my cigar note and you get the idea. Wife - I honestly try to get her the best, but she ends up returning it and getting something smaller/cheaper. Son - What I have is actually his, I'm just borrowing it until he needs it. This includes house, car, watches, and anything else that I own Tires - I'm a huge car guy, HUGE. It shocks me to how my friends will go and buy a Porsche or a Ferrari and stick sub-par rubber on them just because they got a good deal! News flash people. If you don't have tires that do what you want them to do your car wont be able to do what you want! That means a $150k can't provide you $150k worth of enjoyment!
cigcars Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 *Medicines and other over-the-counter pain pills. I've found with great trepidation that generic brand aspirins and Ibuprofens in the store DO NOT WORK- at least for me. I'll go on ahead and spend the additional monies for any name brand medicines I have to. Pain, discomfort and other results of aches do not warrant frugality with me!
PigFish Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I think the comment on mattresses is profound! I also don't buy cheap tires for cars or motorcycles. On another front... contraception is money well spent! Insurance is another place where I will chose a highly rated company and pay a little more than a discount company. If you have ever had a claim denied for some petty reason you understand exactly what I mean. -Piggy
bigfunkyg Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I couldn't agree more on the Mattress. A good nights sleep pays for itself, but go further than the mattress and include the 800 thread count sheets, duvet and pillow. Scotch as well but there is point of diminishing returns. I can spend $60 - $70 in a heart beat, but can't do $140. Used to say golf clubs, but don't play enough to spend the money anymore. G
coneatty Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 The engagement ring. You will be dealing with the ramifications of that purchase ( hopefully,) for the rest of your life. Everything else can be shaved a bit. YMMV.
LateApex Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Helmets - "how much is your head worth?" Safety gear in general. (as in racing, fire suits, etc) - "If you can't afford the safety gear, you can't afford to race"
Fuzz AI Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Never skimp on anything related to your health. Never think, "Do I really need that $1000 procedure to see if I really do have a serious problem?". If your trusted GP says you need it, YOU NEED IT! There is nothing more important on this Earth, or any other for a matter of fact, than the health of yourself or your family. Also never be a skinflint with your lap dancer. Her knees are well placed to cause you misery.
Deemancpa Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Don't skimp on snow tires for a luxury car! Or a winter tire package if you choose to drive a sports car in the winter.(personal knowledge here) Can't drive summer tires in the winter! Champagne & Cognac! Chocolates! valentine's day is around the corner!
Babaloo Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 LAWYERS ELECTRONIC EQMT. HELMETS TIRES FOOD A VERY GENEROUS DATE (PRICELESS)
