anacostiakat Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Link To CA StoryJames Suckling is stepping down as 'the man in Cuba' - anyone any thoughts? Yes! I want to be Da Man In Cuba! If I can't be then I vote for Ken!!!!!!
Onsto Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 Yes! I want to be Da Man In Cuba! If I can't be then I vote for Ken!!!!!! I think its a given that we would all quite like his job.
lemmycaution Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I wonder if Mott and Savona will be upset they have to take over his "assignments".
laficion Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Yes, but the most important part of hanging on to this job is, DO YOU PLAY GOLF ?? Congratulations James
Ken Gargett Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Yes, but the most important part of hanging on to this job is,DO YOU PLAY GOLF ?? Congratulations James used to. never as well as i wanted to so haven't for a while. if it meant getting to cuba more often, and i am way overdue, i'd practice a bit more.
jawofboston Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I think this sucks. I know opinions of the man are varied, but I think he does a good job of including Cuba coverage in CA.
JasonInChiTown Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 For a person that has been with the magazine since its inception, the statement seems a bit forced. As if there is some other reason he's 'retiring". Otherwise, he seemed like a pretentious prick, and his writing was pretty poor.
anacostiakat Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I think its a given that we would all quite like his job. There is a shocker.
Guest rob Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Mott and Savona don't know crap about Cuba... watching them cover Cuba is going to be like pulling teeth. Love him or hate him, Suckling was good for the world of Cuban cigars. He has a sincere love of the culture, the people and the smokes. You can hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes. Yes, he's a dork... but that didn't matter to me.

After all we could have Ken.
Onsto Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 Yes, he's a dork... but that didn't matter to me. My vote for best use of the word 'dork' this year.
PigFish Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Maybe they will hire Simon Chase and we will finally witness some intelligible, knowledgeable reading in CA regarding Cuban cigars. After seeing JS's review of a Hollywood, CA bought CC I was positive that JS had some confusion over the two CC's locally available (Cuban Cigars or Crack Cocaine). -LOL James, don't let the door hit you!! - 1
Colt45 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 It seems he's also "retired" from Wine Spectator. I can't help but wonder if he retired of his own free will - or not.........
OZCUBAN Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Maybe he is not well ,but apart from that i agree with Rob bon voyage
laficion Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Suckling was good for the world of Cuban cigars. He has a sincere love of the culture, the people and the smokes. You can hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes. THAT, can be a real problem for a Mag that is greatly sponsered by NC's but also, he may not fit anymore in a "Life Style " Magazine that only has 7% of cigar related articles, but maybe I'm wrong .
Habanakane21 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Link To CA StoryJames Suckling is stepping down as 'the man in Cuba' - anyone any thoughts? I'm not a tweeter guy but I read this on his tweeter page. Seems some people may have jump the gun!! The reports of my retirement have been greatly exaggerated. Stay tuned for exciting things to come. about 2 hours ago via web

El Presidente Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Congratulations James! Detractors and supporters can agree on one thing....you have certainly added to the colour of the Cuban cigar world I wish you every success mate in whatever you take on. Look forward to catching up in Havana, London or Tuscany.

Look forward to catching up in Havana, London or Tuscany. Well said Rob Love him or Hate him, cuban cigar smokers worldwide are more educated and entertained because of him. Happy retirement James Lets hope for something as important as the Cuba Agent they don't put a knob in that post Cheers OZ
OZCUBAN Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Rob Maybe you could get James over for a shoot on the deck Now that would be interesting

I for one can't stand any of the CA guys except Jack Bettridge and Suckling. How can you not like Bettridge though, that guys carries himself like a god damn man. I think Suckling was the only really knowledgeable guy there with cigars. Hope he enjoys retirement.
tigger Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Either JS suddenly realized that the cA ratings system is tripe and couldn't be a part of it any longer, or Marv got around to seeing the video suggesting that LA bodegas are a legit place to buy Habanos and tossed him out on his ass. I wish him the best either way.
Mr. Japan Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 We loose agreat reporter from L'Havana and we will loose your "cappuccino" flavour in cigar tastings. James, now you have more time to travel to Campania region and share a drink with AMICIgar group. I'm curious on your new projects...if any.
