legaleagle Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Guys, I'm new to the forum so if this post violates any of the rules, no offense taken if it's removed. With that said, I'm brand new to CCs. I'm looking for some recommendations on a good beginner's CC. Something in the mild-medium range is preferable. Some of my current favorite non-CCs are Oliva connecticut reserves and series Os, and H. Upmann vintage cameroons. Thanks for the help!
dicko Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 hoyo de monterrey epicure range is a good start for milder cigars imo. others will be more helpful. lawyer hey?
mash Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Agree with above. The Hoyo Epi #2 is a great start. Same with the El Rey Choix Supreme. Monte #4 is another. Quai D'Orsay Coronas. Rafael Gonzalez PC. Size can be deceptive. Many churchill size sticks are quite mild, some small cigars (Boli PC, Parti Short) are on the fuller side.
jacksfull Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Achhh. Try 'em all. Otherwise, how you gonna' know for sure? Seriously, though, I started with Montecristos. They set the tone nicely and established my first perception of the "typical" Cuban profile, and it stuck. Not sure I'd call it a benchmark so much as a point of reference, though I do think they're darn good. Remember, you're not really trying to match your NC's (else why bother?). You're trying to find out what the world of CC's is like.
samb Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 The ERDM CS is a great light bodied smoke, and one of my favs.
Lanthor Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Search the forum, there are many posts like this with good advice. Mine is go with the 'flagships'. Monte #2 PSD#4 or shorts HdM Epi #1 or 2 RASS or RAG HU 46 Boli Beli and/or PC, RC CORO, really any Cohiba R&J Churchill ERDM CS LG MDO anything SP Beli and the list goes on...this is a good start though.
legaleagle Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Thanks for all your help. I did acquire a box of "SLR" coronas about a year ago. They were very harsh, had a terrible burn, and required a lot of re-lighting...nothing like what the flavor profile was described as. Did a bunch of research after the fact and found a a general consensus that this source often deals in fakes. Since then, I've stuck with mostly NCs, but I would like to "see what the rest of the world offers." Lanthor, yes, lawyer...but one of the good ones
Wil Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Grab a few singles from the 'Mix and Match Premium Sampler'. You'll soon work out what you like.
AlexOk Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 IMO a Robusto-Sampler will be a good idea to start with. Don't smoke the Bolivar first. On mild brands I prefer Por Larranaga or H. Upmann.
PADDYWHACK121272 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Grab a few singles from the 'Mix and Match Premium Sampler'. You'll soon work out what you like. x2 also check out some recent similar threads and don't be afraid to ask our hosts to put together a custom sampler suited to your tastes and budget... enjoy an welcome to FOH
kaleehb Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I started with Juan Lopez Selecion #2 or give the PSD 4's a shot.
Puros Y Vino Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Fonseca Delicias. Nice taste, mild body, cheap price. Por Larranaga Panatella's - Same. H Upmann Mag 50. Medium body, lots of taste and a big meaty cigar to boot. Montecristo #4. Excellent cigar, packed with flavour, not too big a vitola. One caveat. many have said that #4 quality is waning due to the fact it is the most produced cigar. Start off with the 1st two then make your way up.
joeypots Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 It was the Hoyo DC that got me, after that the Hoyo Epi #1 is my best recommendation for a beginners Havana cigar.
Habanakane21 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Hoyo DM #2, Monte 4, PSD4 But I agree with Wil. Go for the singles and make up your own sample pack. Find something you like then go for the whole box. We all started the same way. Sampling is the way to go. Happy smoking
LeafLover Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Definitely go with El Prez mix-match sampler. Grab a couple of cigars in each marca. PM Prez or Lisa to ask them what is smoking well and let them know your flavor profile. This way, you will get looks at different marcas and vitolas.
Colt45 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I think you've been given some great advice with regards to the samplers. But some of the best advice I've read by members here for someone new to Havanas is to go not for the meek and mild, but the most flavorful cigars to be had. What better way to grab your attention and see what the Havana cigar is all about? After that, there's always time to delve into the more subtle and nuanced.
gmoney Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 x2 also check out some recent similar threads and don't be afraid to ask our hosts to put together a custom sampler suited to your tastes and budget... enjoy an welcome to FOH Best way to start
thechenman Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I concur with many of the earlier statments which were made. Definitely go with singles and avoid box purchases to being with. Develop a list of cigars you like before plunging into a box. The Samplers that were mentioned are a great place to start as well. El Presidente can be invaluable in sending you off in the right direction with smokes that are smoking well now, and won't require further aging to enjoy. My suggestions for your taste profile would be: Por Larranaga Petit Corona Fonseca - No. 1 or Cosacos EL Rey del Mundo - Choix Supreme Romeo Y Julieta - Cedros De Luxe No. 2 or No. 3
