Kangaroo495
I've never tried it, but having read the myriad of negative reviews here, I really though it was a bad smoke... But having read this article.... I'm CONVINCED it's shite. lol ""Is there any sense in bringing cigars to The Big Smoke? I asked myself this question again and again as I packed my bags to fly to Los Angeles and then Las Vegas from my house in Italy. The event is this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are going to be so many cigars, and many awesome ones at that. I still threw in a number of smokes from the forbidden island that I thought a few buddies might enjoy smoking. There's nothing better than exchanging smokes with fellow editors, or hermanos, back stateside. I placed in my travel humidor a handful of Montecristo Petit Edmundos, Trinidad Robusto Rs, Montecristo Open Eagles, and H. Upmann Edición Limitada Magnum 48s. On second thought, maybe I won't share any and smoke them all myself! You have heard me rap on about the new Trinidad. That¹s my go-to smoke. And the Montecristo Open torpedo is a hell of a smoke too. I really thought that I wasn't going to like the market-driven cigar, which was supposed to attract a new generation of smokers—blah, blah, blah. But the line is actually really good. It seems that the larger the smoke the better the flavor in the four-cigar range. The Limitada is the bomba in a small, spicy Habanos. Petit Edmundos estan rico. I try not to smoke Cubans during the Big Smoke. It seems uncool, even showy. And what's the use? There are so many great smokes to try. If you are going, let me know what you are going to smoke, or if there is a special smoke I should try. See you all there."" riderpride
At least he actually posts about cigars. I thought he didn't like them when they first came out, then again, he needs to talk about one recent production cigar every year being 'la bamba'; BRC, Cuaba EL, and now this... PigFish, what don't you like about the Big Smoke?

samb
Wil, personally, I think he's a bit arrogant. I think he gloats over being the "European editor" and he gets to buy and smoke Cuban cigars and talk about them in an American geared magazine. I guess its a little bit of jealousy that he can so freely get these cigars. Although its not like I can't get them either, but its on the DL, lol. I have no problem with the other guys at the Aficionado, just for some reason, Suckling just irks me.

Ken Gargett
True...But i can't keep thinking that the man does not say what he really thinks... and it is bothering me... not always as easy to say exactly what you'd like to as we might wish but there are usually ways to say it in some form. but until concrete evidence to the contrary, think everyone gets the benefit of the doubt. his writings seem fairly consistent on the opens, tho as i said, i would not agree. but rob and i have different views on a lot of cigars. another example, take the monte 'C'. as rob keeps reminding me, there are a lot of people out there who liked them and still do. i think that they are diabolical. i'd love to see james join the forum so he can put his views. think that would add to it. Guest rob
Some very harsh critics indeed. I always hate when someone gets critisised for liking something unpopular. I'm pretty sure that many of the folks ridiculing him for liking the Monte Opens... just as quickly pre-ordered the Cohiba Gran Reservas based solely on his 100 point review. I'm also pretty sure that many who ridicule his liking of the Montes have not even tried them. And, for the record, I have no affiliation or interests in CA or its staff. Author: Guess who He tries not to smoke Cubans at The Big Smoke and thinks it's showy and uncool? Well, I was there. And I saw only him smoking Trinidad Robusto T's. And bragging how it is his everyday go-to smoke. Even in the Cuba Seminar on Saturday (a worthless waste of time by the way) he spoke of it and was smoking one. PigFish
I bag on him because his reviews seem to ebb and flow with who is advertising in his rag. I could not give a **** where he lives or how he makes his living. Our friend Rob here, RA, lives and works in the cigar industry as well. He opines cigars in a tough environment too, and even though I call him a 'corporate hack' at times ( ) he is no one's stooge, calls it as he sees it and represents an honest opinion. I may disagree with him from time to time but I don't believe that disagreement is a result of his dishonesty. I ask you; have you seen what rates highly at CA??? I have seen cigars I would not use to soak up horse piss get high marks over there. And don't ask me which either! I have no such neurons to burn on such tripe. I am sure that the Monte Open comment just happens to coincide with some Shankman (sp) advertising deal! I might bag on a cigar. I might bag on an expensive cigar! But I won't bag on a cigars taste just because it is expensive. I also won't turn a blind eye on a cigar because of advertiser dollars, or focus on one for the same reasons. Nothing like the objectivity of a political party running a poll on the performance of their own party member!!! That is what you get with Sir James and the whole crew over there. Arrogant! I don't care. Lotsa' people are arrogant and may damn well be one of them. He is a stooge, a bought and paid for advertising money hack! That is why I criticize his opinion. Someone asked me about the Big Smoke. I have been to them several times because one in particular falls around my B-day and some of my friends enjoy (Ahhhemmm!) a few of the gentlemen's clubs nearby. I have been known to be in a certain town at a certain time, you might say!!! I think the idea of a smokers convention is a really good thing. I think that charging you a couple of hundred for smorgasbord of second rate cigars in a hall of wannabe luxury items is a joke! I think that if 10 friends spent the same dough on a few boxes of real cigars, a few bottles of booze in a cheesy strip club you will have a better time. I know this to be true as a matter of fact!!!! -LOL A few good friends, a few real cigars, some drinks you like and a few lap dances is a way better path to fun than a bunch of 50 year olds with a ticket book reminiscent of the Magic Kingdom chasing cigars from the Fuentes family and trying to get a look at the Punch girl!!! But, like I say, there is an ass for every seat!!! I must admit though. There is a certain thrill to sneaking in!!! That story another time. Rant done! - the Red Pig
