I'm new to the FOH forum, and I have been having such a great time exploring old posts, and I feel very privileged to be able to benefit from the experience of so many of you. I hope it's not out of line for me to start a topic, but I was wondering if any of you would be willing to talk a bit about your favorite corona cigars? Take this wherever you like, but maybe give your thoughts on the following, or on others that you're fond of:

Vegas Robaina Familiar

R&J Coronas

HdM Le Hoyo du Roi

Punch Coronas

Bolivar Coronas Extra

I'm especially interested in how much time these cigars tend to need to sit before they're at their best, and also in how the current ones are, as well as the differences and similarities among them, but mostly I just want to hear what some of you more experienced folks think, in as much detail as you have the patience to relate.

Thanks,

DrunkenMonkey

I love the Coronas Extra truly. '05-'08s are wonderful, but aged ones are great too. Full bodied flavors of earth and coffee, with hints of leather enveloping the palate. Great construction and draw all conveniently packaged into an hour's worth of relaxation and inspiration. And it's bloody cheap too.

DM, current Corona's are generally excellent and in the main are to such a level now that 3-5 years will not show a marked improvement.

On the ready now I am enjoying the following:

Punch Corona

Diplomatico 3

Montecristo 3

Bolivar Corona

VR Familiar

R&J Corona's to me don't smoke so well out of the box young. They need time as do the HDM. 3-5 years.

Quai D'Orsay I am not overly taken by or at least until recently. I can appreciate the qualities others see and my last few opened my eyes to how good thay can be however I prefer the flavour profile of the Punch Corona/Dip 3/ Monte 3.

The Partagas Corona was of course legendary but now long discontinued as has Bolivar (still available in Bolivar Tubos No 1).

From one of Cuba's strongest vitola lineups (serious legendary cigars ) the line up has been decimated through lack of understanding, lack of heart or lack of intelligence. I suspect all three.

Rob, you mean Bolivar Corona NOT Corona extra which is a Fransisco right?

I have never seen these on your website, so I ask.

Senor Presidente,

Many thanks for the advice. Landing in this forum is such a blessing.

Are the Punch Coronas and the Diplomaticos No. 3 currently available?

DM,

If you send Lisa an email, she will let you know when both the Punch Coronas and the Diplomaticos No.3's become available. I just checked the web site and neither is currently showing in stock.

Although it isn't quite the traditional Corona size, I'd add the fantastic Trinidad Coloniale to the list.

Yes they certainly do, but its like pouring salt on a wound for him as these are long gone.

I'll give my vote to the Partagas Coronas but I've enjoyed Punch Coronas a lot lately. Very tasty smokes both of them!

I'm one of the guys who encourged El Presidente to revisit the Quai D'Orsay Grand Coronas. He was pleasantly surprised, as I recall, but still doesn't find their profile to be among his favorites. I really like them.

Bolivar Coronas Gigante are one of my favorites as well.

Recently I have been enjoying some well aged (10 years) Punch Coronas that were offered at obscenely low prices.

The fact is I had to visit H SA to keep up with what is still available in the coronas size. I don’t smoke too many fresh cigars as a matter inventory control and the newest coronas that I have smoked is a Monte 3 from ’07. I can say the both the newer Monte 3 and 4 have been good cigars in my opinion. Seeing that coronas have obviously been declining in popularity over the years many aged cigars are still available if you scrounge around a bit. I believe that Van intimated a bit about that.

Coronas may well be the perfect cigar (MHO). I mean that with utmost sincerity. Rob is right in saying that coronas are certainly an underestimated and misunderstood cigar. Support the cause! Pick one… pick anyone and you will likely be rewarded with a wonderful smoking experience. A couple of weeks ago I smoked a Partagas coronas and then a VR Familiar back to back. Both cigars were fantastic but neither was less than 5 years old so that does not really address your, “rate a recent coronas” question.

I have got a couple of boxes of ’06 D-3’s in cold storage in Rob’s customer locker. Ahhh… patience is a virtue!

Great post Piggy.

I would have thought that given todays trend back to smaller cigars, relaunching and repackaging of Corona and half Corona's would have been a certain no brainer.

Another vote for the Dip #3, and PPC might find those for you Rob, as they are still available at one of their other vendors.

After reading this, I went buying some single Diplo #3 today and just had my first one – excellent cigar! The Corona was the only Diplo vitola I had not tried yet, but I´m already thinking about a box purchase ;-) I always liked the full-aromatic yet medium-bodied character of this marca but was a bit disappointed by my box of Diplo #4 – they had been a bit bland…

Thanks for the good advice!

I thought the Diplo #3 / Punch Corona's were not being made no more ? What did you find old stock would love to try them...

Jimmy2, as I´ve read here on FOH, the Punch Coronas are about to be chopped this year, so they should still be available. Diplos #1 and #3 have been discontinued in 2006 but are still easily found here in germany…

Some excellent suggestions already, but don't sleep on the Upmann corona. Fantastic with some age, imo. Rich and strong and long-burning.

Topping this 5 year old topic.......

I smoked a NC corona yesterday afternoon and it reminded me how much I enjoy the size (around a 5.25 in. (133mm) x 42 or so). Though I have some Boli Petite Coronas on the way, suggestions for a current, true corona sized cigar (or a little bigger) would be appreciated. What is worth aging (like QdO) and what is usually great right off the truck......

Thanks...

There are only 4 true coronas produced todays: Quai d'Orsay, RyJ Cedros de Luxe No.2, Monte 3, and Bolivar No.1 A/T.

The Bolivar is very average, the RyJ is difficult to find, the Monte 3 can be very good but it's a lottery…

The VR Familiar is discontinued but can still be found.
