Seeing as how it makes sense that choicer tobaccos might be directed toward the higher profit vitolas, could it be possible that some long time vitolas become repositories for the "left over, doesn't really fit anywhere else tobacco but we've got to stuff it somewhere as it's too good for the short filler sticks?"

Wouldn't that fly in the face of blend consistency? I'd find it disconcerting that they'd consider doing something along those lines.

Personally, I think they'd be better off simply discontinuing a cigar rather than perpetrate a fraud.

Well, they've been lopping vitolas for a few years now, right? I haven't gone back to look for sure but what if some of those discontinued cigars required particular tobacco "flavors" that could no longer be produced in sufficient quantity. And blend consistency (like quality materials) is, how can I put this, a "want" that perhaps is prioritized on a vitola by vitola basis. It might be the cynic in me but I supposed I'd be a lot more concerned about maintaining quality and consistency on a 50% profit item than a 25% item. And blend consistency isn't an absolute either. What if the rather than the dark scenario I painted, maybe some vitolas were just allowed to vary +/- 30% in profile now as opposed to the former +/- 10%. The numbers are made up but only to make a point.

Slightly more seriuosly, do we have an idea of the popularity (profit) of the RyJ Ex4?

pulled out an older one last night to see if we'd been harsh. it was one i got in the bunch of mixed older cigars rob had on offer a year or two ago. do have the details somewhere but it would have been most likely an 02 or an 03.

it did have a little more complexity, presumably contributed by the extra ageing, but it was minimal. it had an even harder more grubby edge to it. bog average indeed and while you could say it might have been a smidge better than the one from the video but given the extra age, you could also say it was even more disappointing.

then i tried to think of ever having had one that i particularly enjoyed and could not. i see many members have a much broader set of experiences with this cigar but it will be a long, long time down the track before i could be convinced to bother again.

Ken, I am smoking an 01 Exh #4 right now and it is quite good with decent complexity and it could be better is the draw was more open. Enjoyed the show and glad to see the shorts more tight against the leg.

If I made mention that certain "cigar experts" were clueless would I offend anyone? Well, I hope not. If so, accept my apology! -P

fortunately, rob has a very thick skin.

Ken started it!

I specifically indicated "expert" in my deriding post. As a result of the use of the word "expert" you were intentionally exempted Rob. I have nothing but love and affection for all the "working" staff at CZ (Lisa).

Cheers Mates!

Having only tried a handful of the RyJ EX#4's I must say only 1 from an 04 box has pleased my pallette. That being said I'm not a huge fan of the larger ring guages.....................however I find the RyJ Short Churchill to be the best 48-50 ring guaged cigar produced in Cuba today. With the current JL#2 not far on it's heals.

I much prefer CG's,Coronas,PC's..........................
