cuban vs non cuban

Recommended Posts

i smoke cuban cigars for almost 5 years now and they are great... however recently i wondered about how the non cubans taste like... their prices are almost the same as cubans where i live(australia)... so far i've tasted a few from CAO a few from puros indios, ghurkas and macanudo... and i find them not as good as the cubans...my fav are (HDM epicure1 and cohiba siglo 3)

am i smoking the wrong non cubans? or they simply just dont have what it takes to rival cubans?

For me there are some good NCs out there, but they all have a very different flavor profile compared to a Cuban. What i smoke depends on what flavor im in the mood for, some days its CC and some days its not. For non cubans, i suggest:

Tatuaje (brown label)

Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic

Olivia V

Ashton VSG

Illusione

:rotfl: Yes you are smoking the wrong non-cubans.

Padron Anniversario 64 & 26 (I like the maduro)

Fuente Opusx & Anejo

Tatuaje

Cabaiguan

Ashton VSG

are just a few of the ones I like and smoke. There are others according to your taste.

The only non-Cuban that I sometimes enjoy is the Padron 1926 Maduro. It is very different from most Cubans, which is why it is a nice change of pace from time to time.

The problem, though, is that these are prohibitively expensive. I recently paid $32 USD for a single stick at a local shop. At that price, I could have gotten an Esplendido or similar. This top-of-the-line Padron, while good, can't compete with a top-of-the-line Cohiba.

Blame your state taxes and/or retailer. I dont pay that where I am at. I smoke them sometimes and enjoy them. I like diversity.

Anyway, that is why they make vanilla and chocolate ice cream. :-D

My main problem with NCs is that many will taste good to start, but about halfway down start to taste harsh & metallic. Also those premium NCs cost MORE than most Cubans. That being said, I do enjoy an occaisional Tatuaje brown label (the Noellas are my fav) and for an enjoyable cheaper smoke, the corona sized NC Sancho Panza Double Maduro.

If I am not smoking Habanos then the only NC that is a must have in the humidor is Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Belicoso, #2's or Double Robosto. Ohh and of course any Opus X. :-)

DITTO;-)

I would add the Padron Anniversary, Opus X and Cabiguan.

I wouldnt be upset though if all I ever smoked were CC's:-D

Although very different in taste, I agree with the 64 maduro by Padron as well as the 1926 natural. Opus are great if they have a few years(like many habanos) and tats are great.

We have these discussions from time to time - I recently mentioned an NC that I enjoyed myself.

But at the end of the day, if I may use a wine analogy, it's kind of like saying I love French Bordeaux

from the St. Julien AC. Recently, I tried some Italian wine from the Rosso Piceno DOC of the Marche

region. It didn't really taste like the Bordeaux.

It shouldn't.

One of the best NC cigars for me are the Padrons, 26 and I just had a 80th year which was a killer cigar and will stock up on those.

I also like the Padron 3000 ok for the money. It is usually around $5 a stick and very easy to find so I ususally smoke one on the golf course, fishing, etc. when I just want a good, relatively cheap, simple smoke. I think all of thier regular line (2000, 3000, etc.) are a pretty good bargain. For pure smoking ejoyment though, I have given up on NC's for the most part.

I started smoking Padron anny's and still smoke them about 5% of the time. The 26's are a ballbuster ROTT with lots of flavor. My preference is to lay down the 26's a year or 2. The 64's IMO need to be smoked relatively young. Perdomo had a great lineup of sticks 6-8 years ago but now there quality control absolutely sucks. Tatuaje's are wannabe cubans which does nothing for me, why not just smoke the real deal. Once I found a reputable vendor for cubans my decision on what to smoke (CC vs NC) was a no brainer.

A very apt analogy IMO.

Hi peanutking

I've smoked a few NCs (the supposedly "good ones", Davidoff, Don Pepin Garcia, etc.) and I can tell you what they taste like:

- hot air

- hay

- metal

- feces

- a combination of the above

hehe... the puros indios churchill i had does taste like grass and hot air... the macanudo maduro taste like hot air with a touch of chocolate and poo... yet to taste anything i like yet... puros indios are acceptable because they have a little more oaklike woody aroma and a little almond and cumin that i like in them but still.... far from the flavours i get from the cubans i tried... as for construction, NC does put some of the cubans to shame... like the le hoyo de dieux... its good but a the appearance can be improved
