Colt45 Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 I do not have codes as I only have the one 3 pack. Very nicely constructed, firm with proper heft in the hand. A strong smell of cedar cold, but this was from the cedar tube lining and did not show during smoking. Light-medium colorado wrapper with a hint of tooth. Relatively vein free. Draw, burn, and smoke volume were all excellent. My overall impression of this cigar is of rich, sweet tobacco, just a bit of pepper spice, with an overlay of light cherry. It was not quite full bodied, but more full than medium. Very smooth, well balanced, and nicely integrated. It really didn't change much over the course of the smoke until near the end, where the finish became just a bit arid, with the flavors subsiding. I really enjoyed it, and actually was taken by surprise just a bit. I give it a 90 - this may sound odd, but that's with deducting a couple of points for the 50 ring gauge. Because I haven't been smoking anything thicker than 47 as of late, especially without a tapered head, this felt like I was smoking a baseball bat. Subjectivity at it's less than finest :-)
shrink Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 Nice review, Colt. And I agree, this is one of the most welcome additions to the RyJ stable. It's every bit as good as the celebrated Churchill, and more likely to get selected, because of its size. I can't wait for these to age a few years. I'll bet that they're crackers, as Rob might say.
jdbrown Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 I picked up two boxes of June 07. I have only sampled two and the last was a tad ill but I would bet my life that they are future crackers.
jeht Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 This one has been on my smoke list for awhile now. Maybe one day
anacostiakat Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 Well, I guess I have to go against the grain on this one. I do not find these to be full or medium/full bodied at all. Mild/Medium at best is what I have gotten from the couple of the tubed versions that I have tried. It could be that I am/was expecting a short version of the churchill and that is clearly not what I got. I can understand why it is not but it still does not affect my disappointment. I agree they are well made and they may age well. I will revisit later and decide to hold or fold.
Professor Twain Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 I have not smoked the tubed version but I have a box of Short Churchills (SRB ABR 06) and have found them to be mild and with very little flavor. I think that they are beautiful cigars, but I have been disappointed to date.
Colt45 Posted December 26, 2007 Author Posted December 26, 2007 This is a cigar that I'll be keeping my eyes on. If I knew they'd all be as good as this one sample, I'd have no hesitations with a box. But I know one cigar does not a box make. My hope is that as members smoke more of these, they'll post their thoughts.
Moglman Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Haven't had one since the summer months, but I really like this cigar as well. Of the 06's, the only one yet that I've found lacking was the one I had OTT. These just get better, and am looking forward to comparing the 07s. I feel I should do a direct comparison but I feel the A/Ts seem to be improving slightly better than the dress box, but that's probably just my aesthetic perception.

You're not alone in that conclusion. Initially, I got boxes of each, but I'll be buying AT's exclusively from now on.

I had a similar experience. I bought a couple of tubed R&J Short Churchills to sample and they were awesome. Then I bought a 10-pack dress box and they've been much milder and less flavorful. Almost seems like a different cigar. I will let them sit for a while and try them again before making a final determination on these.

Everyone was saved from a giant post I did, because my computer went haywire when I tried to post it. This will be more palatable anyway: 1) this discussion is interesting 2) I tried the Short Churchill (dress box) first last November, and have since smoked through that box and three tubos. 3) I am not sure I think the tubos I tried are better than the box, but I prefer a round cigar more than a box pressed cigar. The Short Churchills from a dress box are quite pressed. This did not stop me from getting six boxes from the Czar during the current sale/raffle. 4) I think it is medium+, certainly not mild. 5) I am always trying to find a daily smoker - something that pleases me most of the time, is not too expensive, carry's easily, is not something I will feel awful about stopping short if the situation calls... - For me, this cigar hit that zone. 5) Anybody want a chance to try one? I will send out 24 to the first 24 PM's I get on this. I will try one from the box to ensure one in the box is at least the same as what I have tried in the past. Cheers, DC

I need to get some sleep. I hope to hear from some of my FOH BTFL when I get up in the morning... This offer is open to anyone..... Even if you have some or have tried them recently.. Cheers, DC
diab0lik Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I WAS going to PM you but then realised you were in the states and shipping to australia would cost more than the cigar :-D so i'm just gonna get some from the czar or locally if i have time
Matthew Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Incredible offer, DC! I've got a few 3-packs, so I'm fine, but WOW! Very, very generous.
bobsled Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I have 3 sticks left, the remnants of a dress box UAS 9/06 that i split with a friend. The entire box has been fantastic, rich, flavorful, nutty and just darn tasty. :-) Hoping to buy another soon........

Two things on the Romeo Y Julieta Short Churchill freebie offer: 1) this offer has changed (for the better). Instead of just sending out a box pressed RyJ Short Churchill to each of you, I have decided to send one Box Pressed and one Tubo to each respondent. I ask you review them and let me or preferably everyone on FOH know what you thought of both, as a smoke in general, and in comparison to each other. Nothing formal required. 2) If I get a response from anyone who wants in to this free tasting today, I will include you. Offer expires at 6am, Pacific Time, Tuesday, February 19, 2008. That is 12.5 hours from now. Cigars go out priority mail Tuesday, 2/19. Cheers, DC

Return fire coming your way with some other R&Js. ;-) -Steve
Alberto_Magnus Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Tried one of them: since then I cant stop thinking about it. Incredible to see such a vitola and then such a mild, harmonious aroma, great evolution and dense, firm ashes. Looking forward to get some more!
anacostiakat Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Smoked another tubo from the same ones (JUL06) and noticed a distinct improvement. Better than the previous ones for sure. Sadly the esposa loved it. Hence a box was ordered. :-)

A return package will be appreciated, but is not necessary! This was not an offer for trade. Just an offer to try out a smoke I love. Some people have asked about the box codes: The Dress Box (pressed cigars) come from the Czar with a box code of SOA Jul 07. The Tubos came from another retailer (through 5th Avenue - the German Distributor,) but they did not come with codes on the Tubo 3 packs. They are likely from around the same time frame as the dressed box, perhaps younger.
