I am new to this site, so bear with me. Looking for some advice on the above selection which caught my attention tonight. I guess with production discontinued, price has gone up!

Reviews I have read seem super, particularly from the 01 and 02 dates. Anyone have any comments on the cigar and whether plunging that amount of dough is a go.

Thanks,

Big E

EDITED: BigE, one of the house rules is that we do not openly discuss other vendors policies, product or price. Please take a moment and review all the sticky threads and get a feel for the forum. Thank you.

Mate... someone will slap yar hand for not reading the forum rules... better remove the supplier's name form yar post.

Big E---It is very bad to ever mention the name of a vendor when writing on a forum or chat board. Vendor names are something we keep to ourselves and only give out to our closest friends and family, and sometimes not even to them. Have a nice evening buddy!

Now to answer your question, The Punch Super Selection No.2 was to my knowledge discontinued in 2002 by Habanos S.A. as the product line had too many items within the same vitola. That basically means that Punch made too many cigars that were the same size and not all that different from each other.

While I am not someone that would be considered a huge fan of the Punch Marca, there are several that I do enjoy. That being said, the price you mentioned sounds steep in my humble opinion and I would consider expanding your search. Maybe you can find them a little cheaper, maybe not as they are not often found any more due to there production being halted 5 years ago.

after echoing the thoughts of others re the posting of vendors' names and other such inappropriate behaviour, yes, the PSS2's were doscontinued in 2002. you do see them floating around havana still, in the various stores. would have to check currently unavailable notes re pricing. we came across a bunch of singles earlier this year from one of the stores that were very tough, but in general, this is a personal fave. have smoked a lot of 02's but don't think i've ever managed to try an '01. the '02s usually smoke beuatifully. there should be quite a few posts on these if you check back.

Ah, the dearly departed Super Seleccion No. 2. A great Punch, by any measure. I agree with Ken, the '02s were superior, but the '01s are stronger.

As you have discovered, these are now very hard to come by, and they are quite pricey. Unless you are absolutely determined to have this particular cigar, I'd point you in the direction of other, currently available Punch vitolas:

Super Seleccion No. 1 is a Corona Grande. Available in SLB's of 50 only. With age, it's got some substance to it, with much of the depth and tannic strength found in the SS#2. The '03s are smoking great now.

Royal Seleccion No. 11 is the same size as the SS#2, a Corona Gorda. Available in SLB's of 25 only. It's not as strong or tannic as it's long lost brother, but it is loaded with flavor.

I happened to have smoked 3 of the '01s yesterday. Amazing that these remained in supply at alot of vendors long after the cut date. In fact up until the end of last year they were pretty easy to come by.

I would echo Bob's comments on the SS1. In fact I actually prefer it over the SS2 sizewise and constructionwise. More accessible at an earlier point too. I'd love to try a 20 yo SS2 though...

I love the SS#2....a damn good stick if you ask me. Is it worth the higher dollars, no one can answer that except yourself. If you can afford it, then buy 'em. I'm sure it can be easily re-sold if you don;t like them.

PS - If anyone has any empty Punch SS#2 cabs, I'm in search of one. Thanks!

Avid, I do believe that the empty cabs are even harder to find than the cigars themselves. Everyone wants to put their unbanded stuff from Rony in 'em!

I have a cab box but it is not empty.;-) I still remember my first one while I was cleaning the pool on a warm summer morning and thinking that this cigar is magic. I have a few that are a little tight and other than that they are very nice smokes. As to price of a cigar they are worth what the seller can get.

Shrink certainly you did not mention a name did you?;-)

Thanks for the feedback; my apologies on the indiscretions. I have the Royal Selection #11, and they are terrific.

No problem Big E. We all make rookie errors. Thanks Tampa and others for quickly dealing with it.

Ken and I noted something in Havana in Feb 2007. Some of the remaining boxes of Punch Super Seleccion No 2's were plain ordinary both in consruction and flavour.

Personally, unless you have a source who can land you a primo box...I would go with a similar cab of Punch Super Seleccion No 1. My favourite of the Punch lineup.
