That would be the first good decision that he has made.

This is a Serious Issue and should not be taken lightly!

Cigarmakers in a panic

The federal tax on each cigar could rise from 5 cents to $10.

This move would be a death stroke for the Cigar Industry!!!!

» That's insane surely the Anti-Tobacco Nazi's aren't that influential???

They are running out of money for pet programms. No government wants to increase income taxes and so "Sin" taxes take the hit.

This is unlikely to be passed from what I have read however it is just the first assault on the wall. They will re-group and come again.

The only way to stop them is to take their oxygen (power). Threaten their seats through voter intentions.

In a make believe world I would love to see a senate candidates selected by the Sin Lobbies

(cigar lovers, cigarette smokers, Gun lobby, fishing lobby, 4X4 lobby, Hotels/bars/casino lobby, Alcohol industry lobby, Sex workers lobby) whose sole design is to protect freedoms which pass the crucible of "people taking responsibility for their own actions"

It would be a great political party promoting self responsibility, self regulation and reasonable taxation. It could be called the "Party Party Party Party" but I am thinking more along the lines of the "LFR Party" or Liberty Party (LFR) for short.

Its charter would be:

1. To protect the interests and freedoms of average citizens.

2. To negotiate fair taxation and regulation for the good of all and not for the minority.

3. To seek out and expose government hypocrisy.

4. To be the arch enemy of non elected committees seeking to destroy a way of life.

Now everyone within the organisation may not agree with the views of other groups within, but they all know that united they are 30% of the population, individually they are nought.

In a preferrential voting system such as ours (Aust) it would be easier to do so as we only need 5% of the vote for a senate seat.

Then you would have a hand at the table and even better, the other parties need you to pass legislation.

I like to daydream on Wednesdays :-D

Do any of you Americans listen to NPR? That freaking ultra liberal moron Daniel Schorr was on there complaining at how Bush was against the children. If he loves the uninsured kids so much, why doesn't he freaking help pay for their insurance? I freaking hate "sin" taxes, even if I don't partake in a particular sin.

Well....it passed!

It's all up to Bush now.

Notice the vagueness of the last paragraph.

Senate panel OKs child health bill

By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer

ASHINGTON - A Senate committee brushed aside threats of a veto from President Bush in overwhelmingly approving on Thursday a $35 billion expansion of a children's health insurance program.

The program subsidizes the cost of insurance for children and some adults with incomes too high for Medicaid but not high enough to afford private insurance.

A majority of Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee joined all of the committee's Democrats in approving legislation to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program. The vote was 17-4.

The committee's chairman, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said the vote was a strong statement that lawmakers want to strengthen the program.

"Millions of children have no health insurance," Baucus said. "There are more kids without health insurance than there are kids in the first and second grades. Americans overwhelmingly support getting kids covered."

The additional funding for the program under the Senate proposal would bring total funding for SCHIP to $60 billion, which is double what the administration has proposed. The Senate bill pays for the expansion by increasing tobacco taxes. The tax on a pack of cigarettes would increase by 61 cents. Taxes on other cigars and chewing tobacco would also jump.

:surprised:

Hmm... if cigar taxes and duties increase in the US, it will severely dent my plans to move my mob to Gringolandia... not good man, not good... maybe they should consider putting the tax on something evil like... Election campaign speeches!!! a buck-per-second tax may work like a charm!

Bring Clinton back!

He at least knows how to make a cigar, soft, moist, flavorsome, tasty and aromatic. You certainly don't want Hillary who would probably slap on an even bigger tax.
