jakebarnes Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 » What a shame. It really is. This particular cigar has that sentimental place in my heart as it was not only my first habano, but my first cigar ever. Really is a shame to see the RyJ Churchill in such a state according to your review. Pete
jadawin Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Ive never been a big fan of the RyJ flavor profile. I like the Cazadores and Short Churchill, but the rest arent for me. I think ill pass on this cigar.
KB24 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 This is disappointing. I am looking for a churchill sized cigar that is mellow, creamy, and not too strong. Just a cigar I can relex and enjoy for a good 2 hours. Suggestions? Any hope for the 2007 RyJ Churchills? -Patrick

I have a box of 06 sitting at the bottom of my cooler that I have high hopes for. When the time is right, I pray they dont let me down.
Jimmy2 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 La Gloria Cubana Tainos is an excellant churchill i really like them also the Boli CG is tops in my book.
shrink Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 » Aged Lusi's Yeah? Well, I'll see your aged Lusi's, and raise you some ENE07 Lusi's. Really. These babies are a throwback to a bygone era.

Keep in mind this is one box although I have had too many other R&J from 06 which show similar signs of mediocrity. There will be exceptions.
jay8354 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 This does not bode well.... esp when you said that you have sampled a few and they are all ordinary to bland. Is this going to be a trend or just a dip in quality? I am disappointed to say the least. :-(
Zaphod42 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 The last few I had were very boring and flat. Glad to see that I wasn't just crazy in thinking that.
JulietasRomeo Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 That is a shame. The Churchies are a staple in my humidor. Guess I'll have to stay clear of this batch. =(

I particulary like the rich red hued wrapper variety. It is a one in a hundred box search but when you get one of these, even the 06's I have sampled, they are exceptional.
jsd Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Sorry to top an old thread, but I was reading this again and noticed the band on this churchill was shiny gold like the short churchill. I have seen 06s with this style as well as the other, I guess you could say duller style with less bold font. Is there any rhyme or reason to the difference in the bands? TIA. Jes
broozer Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 the entire RyJ line really does nothing for me. i have a fiver of '01 POW's aging, but they won't get smoked for a long time to come. probably won't light one up til their 10 year mark. bruce

Jes Jes 06 saw the introduction of updated bands in several lines (Upmann 2 is another that comes to mind). They will use up existing bands even if that means applying new bands at the same time (same production run). They just try to avoid using different bands in the same box ;-)
havanaclub7 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Rob, I totally agree with you that recent RyJ Churchills suck. I've had my share of disappointments, including sticks that have a loose draw and even a couple that went out about 60% of the way through and NEVER relit. There is a problem here with the once great cigar. Anything that can be done to help return this cigar to greatness will be much appreciated.
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Romeo y Julieta Churchill ASB JUN 06 I can't bring myslef to write a full review of this cigar. The experience simply doesn't warrant it. What a tramp. Dressed to the nines, looking a million dollars it lures you into a set of expectations which only leaves you in a state of despair and dissillusionment. I want my 90 minutes back. How can a legendary offering with the pedigree of the greatest thoroughbred racehorce turn into nothing more than a second rate country racecourse nag..... good only for the pet food abbatoire? A cigar should bring pleasure to the palate, cerbral enlightenment, a sense of reflection. This R&J Churchill only managed anger and depression. A Churchill sized cigar has the platform to take you on a journey. That Journey can be wild and boisterous, smooth and mellow. The JUN 06 Churchill started with nothing and took me nowhere. Draw was perfect, burn adequate but it was the cigar equivalent of a fishing without a hook. Pointless. This was not a case of young tobacco in a sick phase needing time to evolve. The cigar has nothing to work with. No pepper, no spice, no depth, no sharp edges, no sourness, no bitterness....nothing. It was as if it were the cigar equivalent of plastic fruit in a shopwindow display. Not all is well with recent R&J. It is a problem which needs to be rectified and done so quickly. I have fired off my concerns to people who do care in HSA and hopefully...just hopefully, they will take the concerns to the blending level. For lovers of Churchills look elsewhere. There are superb LGC Tainos, Bolivar Corona Gigantes, Punch. Don't waste your time wth this trash.
