I actually am a placement engineer.

Have you ever seen those 'Crane Games' in arcades with the big fluffy stuffed animals? It is my job to make them appear accessible, but in all actuality, make them damn near impossible to get. It's really quite tricky, but I ranked 8th overall in the nation last year in my placements ($1 to toys 'yanked' ratio - in the industry we call it the DTTYR).

It really is rewarding, and challenging. You have to walk a fine line between difficulty and impossibility. The clientele can catch on if NOBODY ever wins (they get discouraged and stop putting money in the machine and then NOBODY ;-) wins), so you have to keep that in mind. Also, it's kind of like putting a puzzle together blindfolded. You have to anticipate which toys are going to get pulled and make sure that all the other toys remain a challenge. Many of the newer guys make the toys on top difficult, but once one or two go - things open up and it's a free-for-all. I'm sure you've seen this happen before. When you do next time, just say to yourself, "F'ing New Guy".

I do mechanical design for an emergency lighting company. I design the fixture enclosures (cast alum, sheetmetal, injection molded plastics, etc), and also handle the photometrics side of things (lighting layouts for customers).

I also do contract work on the side for the same company, graphic design and print media (spec sheets, catalogs, advertisments, etc.)

If that isn't enough to keep me busy, my wife and I also do some web design on the side...

How in the world does someone get into this line of work? Or did you just place yourself into it?:-D

I'm a student right now. Right now I'm in the army, with 3 months left. After that I'll work with something for a couple months, then resume my studies. Something has to pay for this addictive hobby :-P

» I enjoy seeing what other folks on the board do for a living...

My real job says I'm a "Senior IT Systems Support Tech". That means if no one else can fix it, then I have too. I'm starting an IT consulting company though, so soon "Owner, Consultant" will be my new title. :-P

I am the Operations Manager for the largest privately owned vending service company (i.e. Vending machines with Coke, Pepsi, Candy, Snacks, etc...) in Florida.

And Lisa (the First lady) encourages my cigar habit ;-) - My monthly cigar budget is always blown out of the water! (LOL)
