In your experience, which cigar is most prone to a sick period? Which is the one which you always have to age. Similarly, which cigar are good from the get go right out of the box?

Here's mine:

Sick Period Puppies:

HDM Petit Robusto (Not sure they will ever come out :lol2: )

R&J Exhibicion No 4

Partagas D4 (though many believe it is great out of the box).

Great from the get go :

RASS

VR Famoso

Partagas Serie P No 2

I second the HDM petite robustos. Need to smoke them very fresh or wait over a year.

PSD 4 after 6 moths from fresh they go sickly.

"which cigar is most prone to a sick period?"

All of them, every single last one is Prone to having a "sick" period at some point in its development. IMHO

I also believe that ageing a cigar will substancially help the flavors and bring out the nuances because the blend has had ample time to allow the different leaf to "marry" and bring out the full essence of the cigar.

For the most part, I believe that smoking a cigar right off the truck is a waste of time, and money, but each to their own. I always rest a new arrival at least 30 days to stablize, longer if at all possible.

While I do enjoy a fresh PSD4 and Party Short, few others have ever been anything but a disapointment smoking them fresh. Again, I know that many believe different, but because I am building my inventory to the point that I don't have to smoke anything with less than 3 years of age on it, and will be soon have the ability to choose from smoking only Habanos with 3,5,8 years of age. The difference of all the cigars I have smoked has benefitted because of the improved flavors and complexity from time in the Humidor resting and ageing.

I think the new Trinidad Robusto Extras are one cigar that tasted green when first introduced, but have since gotten far better with a little time and should continue to improve.

Cohiba Robustos also seem to taste far better after sitting in the humidor for a year or two.

The most consistent experiences I've had with sick cigars are with D4s and Punch-Punches. The former seem to go through a period of harshness while the latter seem to go through a period of extreme blandness.

Swap the PS2 and the PSD4 for me. My fresh SD4 are more ready than the PS2.

I have some four year old RASS that are no better than the feshies. Some of my new BBF are that sparkling either.

Most of the Cohiba(except the Sig.6) need time.

Hey Tampa, My collection is to young to have the luxury you do, but give me time. I also smoke 2-5 a day and that keeps the stash from growing to rapidly.

Totally agree with you on the CR's.

Have to agree with you on the Partagas Serie P No. 2 However I feel it will

be all the better two years down the road-especially in the middle of the cigar.

The only cigars I've experienced as really SICK are PSD4s, right on schedule at 6 months.

Personally I love these suckers fresh. I've never had one older than a year - the people I know with aged stashes hoard 'em like crazy.

agree the psd4 is a smoke right away or put away cigar..it goes really sick...also i find the party shorts better fresh or they seem to loose something with time.

the edmundos seemed to be lousy at first... but after a bit of time blossomed into a decent smoke.

i've found the edmundo's consistently good from day one. but i think that you are right in that they are getting better. had one the other evening and loved it.

I liked the Edmundos from the start also, but I also think the Monte C is getting better and may one day be worth what I paid.

Worst Sick:PSD 4 and RASS ( I've got a box from 03 that I'm still waiting on)

Best Fresh: Shorts, PSD 4 and Siglo I's

Sick periods, brought about by collector brewed Koolaid... MHO! -Piggy

PS: Sorry Chuck, a point on which we disagree! A properly made and stored cigar, does not get sick... period!!! RIP brother!

RASS and PSD4's here.  Curious if everyone's selection/opinion have changed over the years?

None. I have never had a "sick" RASS or D4. The days of cigars being rolled with underfermented tobacco reeking of ammonia are gone.

Every box of Habanos I have bought since the year I started switching over to CC's in 2008 have been fine. Never the aroma of ammonia. Always a pleasant barnyard aroma.

Very interesting. I am this way with Bolivar and Monte. Never had a cigar I didn't like.... of course some are always better than others.

Good out of the box at least recently...SLR Regio.

RASS, HUPC, HUC #1, PLPC, PLMC, RyJ PC, Trinidad anything.  I don't like excessive tannins!

I can't recall ever having a cigar that I would describe as going through a 'sick' period. Some benefit from a few months rest more than others but that is due to my personal tastes and preferences. I have had custom rolls while in Cuba that had slight ammonia smell but tasted fine. I didn't bring any back with me (much to my annoyance) so they may well have taken a funny turn while the tobacco ferments/settles/bows to the will of the cigar mystics.

@El Presidente I guess I should have brought this up again by asking you!

Has your opinion changed on which if any cigars are prone to a sick period?

Posted

Only experience I have had with this recently is in travel sickness.  As @PapaDisco and I have said the Upmann PC and Winnie's are bad about this.  I also don't like fresh Ramon Allones anything, SCDLH La Fuerza and some RYJ.  But as for a sick period per se--none in recent memory.  Some custom rolls go through a period of I guess sickness where they taste off but I don't think it's the ammonia laden taste I have experienced in the past.
