RedLantern Posted March 13 Posted March 13 I have a bad memory for things like this, but one thing that stands out is getting a lot of salami sandwiches. Unfortunately, the mayonaise and salami didn't hold up too well being in a backpack/locker all day. It was the 90's so it was, I think, the golden era of "fruit snacks." Elementary school I probably got a fruit roll up, but later it would have been fruit by the foot, and then gushers probably my middle school. No drink, that's what water fountains are for. 2

The only thing I think I can recall is some sponge pudding with custard... maybe. Mine didn't have the veg options 😂 Creamed potato scooped with an ice cream scoop/potato smilies, then either Lamb savories or fish fingers. Supper was yellow, pink or brown custard with 2 chocolate buttons dropped in occasionally, no actual sponge or cake etc, just the custard. Sometimes it would be a rice pudding on a special occasion. They were a fortune too, quickly went to packed lunches to avoid the rickets! Usually a bread cake with ham/chicken roll/billy bear meat, a packet of raisins and a satsuma, some cheese and a club/penguin biscuit. I remember if I was lucky a home made Cornish pasty for first break! 1
El Hoze Posted March 13 Posted March 13 On a typical day, my lunches were fairly mundane. My mom wasn’t known for her cooking. But pretty frequently my mom would pick me up a “sub sandwich” and deliver it right before lunch (I grew up in New Jersey, subs are also known as hoagies/grinders. It’s a long roll with fresh sliced meats, lettuce, tomato, onions, oil & vinegar). Those days I would be the envy of the whole school as everyone was eating crap and I’m there digging into a fresh sub. The tradition continues with my 7 year old son. Every once in a while, birthdays etc. I will pick him up a Jersey Mike’s sub and drop it off for him. My son’s name is Mike so it’s become a bit of a joke among the ladies in the front office. 3
Puros Y Vino Posted March 13 Posted March 13 I used to have a 1/4 Calabrese sandwich with either Mortadella/cheese or some other coldcut with cheese. 1/4 of this bread. Which probably contributed to my chubbiness as a child. To my mothers' credit she always put some fruit , grapes, peach, plums, etc and maybe a juice box. 2

BG318 Posted March 13 Posted March 13 I became a hero in freshman year high school. Everyone hadn't yet gotten to know one another. My mother had given me 2 pieces of bread and 1 slice of "American" cheese for the first ten days of high school. Nothing else in the bag. Everyone around me ate hot lunches with potatoes pasta soup chocolate milk etc. Day 11 I opened the bag, then I stood up and yelled "What does she think, I am a f$#ng rabbit", and threw the sandwich at the wall. It stuck, and everyone laughed and cheered as I stormed out. From then on I got a dollar. 1
dicko Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Love this thread! When I was young it was a vegemite and cheese sandwich, fruit roll up, piece of fruit, maybe twiggy sticks, maybe some olives. But I switched to cash pretty soon so then it was pies, sausage rolls and cheesies (burger bun cut in half with cheese grilled on it). Masters Spearmint milk in a 600ml carton! A local classic. We used to play a brutal game called "barcode". You threw the carton up in the air and if it landed barcode up everyone got to punch your arm. Very silly stuff, haha! Joeyjojo Posted March 19 Posted March 19 A pack of 10 cigarettes and a box of matches. Probably why I've aged 2X quicker than my peers! 😆 3
