El Presidente Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 EAR: Email Assistance Required. "He’s finishing up college next May, and I’d like to gift him a cigar cutter, lighter, maybe a nice accessory he can hold onto for life, along with his very first real watch. I know most young folks don’t bother with watches these days, but he’s really into modern mechanical design, cars, motorbikes, knives, watches, that kind of thing. I just want to give him a proper first piece, and I know you’ve been involved with watches before. Any suggestions are welcome, eh. Budget’s about $2,500 total." over to you good people
Gubbins Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 Tag Heuer knock on around that price point I believe 🤷🏻♂️ You can get other decent automatic watches for a lot less though. 3
Wookie Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 Breitling makes some nice pieces in that range. I’d focus on one nice watch instead of a bunch of lesser stuff. 3
Nevrknow Posted August 27, 2025 Posted August 27, 2025 $$$. On the watch. Cheapo on the cigar accouterments. I have expensive and cheaper cutters and lighters. The cheaper ones never fail me. Plus, harder to lose a watch than an ST Dupont lighter. 😉 Edit: I would explain the cheaper items just like that too. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted August 28, 2025 Posted August 28, 2025 I'd go all in on the watch. In that price range, a ceramic Rado Captain Cook is hot, something from Ball, Mido, or mint used Omega Aqua Terra or Speedmaster are good choices. Maybe you could find a mint Chopard Mille Miglia. 1
SirVantes Posted August 28, 2025 Posted August 28, 2025 If I were starting over with watches, with the stated budget, I'd go with niche or microbrands that offer better value for the same quality as the big boys. With a limited budget, you also won't eventually think "should have gone higher up the food chain" for the recognisable brands. I'd also go for a dive watch, which I believe is the most versatile. Into mechanical design, cars and motorbikes? Hanhart 417 ES 1954. This is a remake of the watch that Steve McQueen wore. Personally, I've been thinking of picking up this watch for myself. 2
El Presidente Posted August 28, 2025 Author Posted August 28, 2025 I would keep it simple, slimline and timeless (excuse the pun). Enough change left over for a 10 cigar Sotelo Cigar Travel Case.
Montezüma Posted August 28, 2025 Posted August 28, 2025 NOMOS would be a good fit for college, in-house mechanical, informed, distinctive but not too risky if ever passed out under questionable circumstances. The drawback is that lack of familiarity makes it a weak form of exchange during emergencies. Something that is important for someone venturing on their own for the first time, a safety margin for getting out of tight spots in an adventurous life. Cartier would have that lifelong keeper and family values about them but its slightly beyond the bracket. 2

LordAnubis Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 I’d go longines flagship heritage with small seconds. L
abcd1234 Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 If you stretch budget somewhat you can score a nice vintage Rolex Datejust 36 16014. With a jubilee bracelet and white gold bezel it's a timeless that works in literally every occasion since it's discrete enough to be worn dressed down as well as elegant enough for fancier events. It's also guaranteed to hold (more likely to appriciate) in value better than previous suggestions in this thread
