15:52 The time I will never get back. That poor BHK. So much to digest in this video. The butchered cigar, the wine notes & tasting vernacular on overdrive. A bit of pomp, stuffiness, etc. It's funny. Watching this video puts me on the outside with those who don't smoke cigars, that listen to cigar people, talk about cigars. I'm into wine too mind you and musing about cigars IMO comes from the wine world. We can get carried away with our notes and I do believe some are genuine and some are inflated for the sake of showmanship and one upping another "expert". "Oh you don't taste stonefruit? You might be one of those who share the palate of tin can chewing goats" The wine did sound interesting though. So there's that. But, I'm not one to buy the expensive bottles TBH. I've had a few just to see if there was something "extra" to justify the premium. There was a bit, but not enough to continue that pursuit. That's fine though. More money for cigars!

Some context - these 2 gents were featured in a documentary called Somm, which follows their attempts to pass the Master Sommelier exam. The dramatic highlight was the blind tasting part of the exam, and we get to see that "tasting vernacular on overdrive" (love the phrasing, btw) is exactly how they approach the task and exactly how they talk wine. It's 3 dozen flavours named in about 40 seconds.

The funny thing is, they come off as pretty sympathetic characters in the doc, especially if you are also somewhat into wine.

What this video teaches me is this: one can be a master at something, and also be an idiot at not-that-thing. Which is an argument for listening only to elites/experts, but only for that which they are expert/elite in. And against electing non-career politicians into office, or asking sportsman about anything other than their particular sport.

Thanks for this. Interesting. I can't say I dislike the two. They seem to be conducting themselves and speaking in a way that's consistent with wine lovers, sommeliers, etc. It is always fun to poke at what is said in regards to notes, etc. That rings true for cigars as well.

I thought they were complete dilettantes.

I learned nothing and was not entertained. Was there any other point to them posting this video? My guess is that they love themselves and love watching themselves. @Ford2112, is that what a dilettante is? I left my big word dictionary at home today. 😁

Now I don't want to watch somm either. You don't have to watch much to get to the put it back in the humidor bit. Wasting those couple minutes is enough.

" I cut it to retain freshness, and dropped it back in the humidor". Sometimes you just want to slap the piss out of someone. A cigar with a "special " bottle of wine seems to be the action of a  poseur, and a Sommelier should know better. Who is responsible for training this idiot?
