This Week!  The lizards pair H. Upmann Magnum 54 with Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky. The guys review AI created images of themselves sent in by Lizard listener, they detail the long history of the whiskey pairing and they discuss the tell tail signs of counterfeit Cubans.

I’m really curious how the forum feels about the Magnum 54. I was disappointed.

I have had exceptional examples but the majority have been below average for me.

I have been really lucky with the Magnum 54. Consistently 91 point - 93 point range with a few higher.

I have come across few flavourless/cardboard examples but they do exist.

It’s one of my favorite and most consistent cigars. However, I’ve been smoking all from the same two boxes. I have another two boxes that I’m going to dip into just to see if I see more inconsistency but I sure hope not!

I've smoked a handful of those a few years ago, probably all from the same box and I was disappointed... Given I'm a huge Mag 46 and Mag 50 fan, I didn't feel the need to give it another go, plus the 54 RG doesn't help 🧐

This is as good a spot as any. HU Mag 54 review (Xmas Sampler)

Cut this with the extra sharp cutter that my brother found for me at a garage sale. Noticed an unidentified bit on the blade and a corresponding piece in the cigar. After fishing out some small pieces with a tweezers, I decided to go all-in with a forceps. Pulled out a piece of paper approximately 30cm square. Thought it might be a secret cry for help, but only found the letter “U” written on it. Possibly the other 24 cigars in the box contained the rest of the message? Since the cigar was already destroyed, I decided to split it open, but that was the only surprise contained within.

This might help explain the occasional papery/cardboard notes that you’ve experienced from time to time?

I'd say 3cm tops 😁

Oops! mm, not cm. One and one-quarter inches!

Better.

It's okay Chas. I can see El Pres making a joke about Americans and the metric system here quite soon! 😂

54 has been great for me @LizardGizmo. I’ve smoked approx 60-70 in last five years. All from 10ct boxes (fyi) and range of years / codes. You can sometimes pick em up for $24-$26 a piece on a certain platform too, but you gotta be quick 😊

Great that taking a break from tequila. I’d like to know the Upmann Sir Winston is coming to the POD?

Definitely going to do it this year! Probably a holiday episode somewhere! Here’s a question - is it more valuable to hear a review on an SW that’s super aged or younger?

For me personally I’d prefer a younger SW & definitely it needs some Pol Roger champagne. I’d also like to hear a review of Dalmore King Alexander, it’s one of my favourite whiskies.

I’ve liked the few examples I’ve tried. Maybe 3 total. I have a box of 10 resting. Though, I would most definitely take the Epi 3 and D5 over it, which is a bold statement for me as I’m an unapologetic Upmann whore. Connie A all day instead.

I say do a young one, even though I like Winnies fresh or aged. Although, if you or any of the other Lizards happen to have any 14-16, these are REALLY top tier right now. Had a BIG wow moment with one about 3 months ago. Have found they are fairly linear (still great) until about 5 years, and then they gain complexity. Your mileage may vary. The 2014 I smoked was 96 (plus 😜).

While I'd love to hear the lizards take on the 02/03's, I think a newer release (5 years?) would be more beneficial and obtainable for the vast majority of listeners. But...why not both? Maybe a special double episode smoking new and then old?

Had 'em early on. Was very underwhelmed. Won’t buy again.
