So I had a great music collection in 2005- 2010, largely due to Limewire and Utorrent. In retrospect, massive music ripping/sharing wasn’t a fare practice for the artist. But neither do I want anything to do Spotify or Apple Music etc.

My relationship to music has been a bit punctured due to platforms I want nothing to do with.

Are there any music geeks out there that can advise me how to have a 2005 set up?  Basically digital albums I own, and store without any involvement from platforms that charge, monitor and suggest.

Many thanks for this. Once you have the tracks on your computer, what player do you use? As in iTunes library type platform?

Oh. I do take that side of things for granted, because I lean on my NAS service which has music sharing built in. But depends on where/how you want to listen.

- home audio: audio processor can access from the NAS files directly over wifi and play through hifi setup.

- home PC: Use a web browser to access the NAS audio service.

- away from home: VPN to home and use mobile music app provided by the NAS.

I've not used a home music management service for a long time! What's good these days? I see folk talking about Navidrome, but I don't know it.

The real advantage of this is lossless audio, which is in today's world is rarely heard. Its rather crazy to witness people (gen z especially) being so accustomed to 320kbps, even 256kbps. In fact streamers often run at 128kbps under certain circumstances, which is a far cry from the real thing that is easily noticeable when compared between them. I know people go on Discogs and get vinyl which is a great hobby. Collectability is high and great deals everywhere.

My old NAS has an iTunes server built in. I can access it via various devices. I've also setup music on my Plex server. Haven't done much yet in terms of remote clients. I mostly listen to my collection on my PC TBH. At the gym I pull out my iPod shuffle or my Marley Bluetooth headphones paired to my cell in case I need to take calls. I've DL'd TONs of music over the years. Mostly bootlegs in FLAC format which most players play natively now. I've ripped all my CDs. Sold off the majority of them. Only have some key HTF / in demand stuff, which I still might sell. I love CDs but I'm not attached to them any longer. They take up too much space.

Plex server and NAS should do it if you want your own database of music. I've been selling my media collection on Discogs for years. Everything I want to listen to is on Tidal.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but bandcamp could be a good option, depending on what artists you are interested in.

I forget. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic...

Are you suggesting Debbie was a replicant? Interesting. It's all starting to make sense.
